status: open who: richard gansey iii location: outside hotel cortez
Tumblr media
gansey paused outside of the hotel, hands in his pockets. one was messing with the car key he’d received from the pawn shop, another mystery he’d yet to unravel -- why he would have a car key with no car to go to ?? it seemed redundant, but it was similar to this hotel in front of him: something drew him to it. he couldn’t pin what it was, even as he stood outside and admired the architecture of the building and ran his finger over the ridges of the key in his pocket. it felt like the simplest thing to figure out, but it was always just out of reach. He looked over at the person stopped next to him before his eyes drifted to the building again. “ have you ever felt... drawn to something ?? ” he asked, not looking away. “ even though you can’t figure out what it is that’s pulling you there ?? ”

MBTI: The Raven Cycle
Tumblr media
Richard Campbell Gansey III: INFJ
“The way Gansey saw it was this: If you had a special knack for finding things, it meant you owed the world to look.”
Gansey finds divine purpose in his near-death experience: to find Glendower. He lets this abstract vision of a mythical dead Welsh king consume his life. Unwavering about finding Glendower, he rearranges his life, travels to countless different countries, and moves to Henrietta for this quest. Gansey shuffles between different personas as the situation calls for it. He's tempered and polite in his interaction with others, used to getting his way, and solving problems with his natural ability to charm others. He bears a strong sense of responsibility for his friends, often putting their needs and feelings before his own that he feels as if he would never be able to walk away from them. Gansey's logical, curious, interested in things for the sake of it rather than for a specific objective. His journal, notably, filled with ideas and research and his analyses, serves more of an aesthetic purpose than a practical one.
Blue Sargent: ENFP
“She wasn’t interested in telling other people’s futures. She was interested in going out and finding her own.”
Blue is eclectic, quirky, looking for something deeper and more profound in the world that she can call her own. She has a sense of adventure, quick to change her mind about the Raven Boys when she realizes they can be mutually beneficial to each other. She's fiercely individualistic, always careful that her sense of unconventionality reflects off of her at all times. Strong-willed and opinionated, Blue knows her mind and doesn't let anyone stop her from doing what she wants (she refuses to let her lack of magical abilities curse hold her back; she defies Maura repeatedly so that she can help Gansey and his friends with their quest.) Blue's both proud and exasperated by her sensibility (Si). She lets her personal experiences with the Aglionby boys skew her perceptions, and refuses to change her mind about it until she can judge who they are for herself.
Adam Parrish: INTJ
“Adam had once told Gansey, “Rags and riches isn’t a story anyone wants to here until after it’s done.”
Adam lives in a near-constant detachment from his reality, sharply focused on the future instead. His inner world is absorbed in building, shaping, and working toward the sort of life he wants for himself. He's strategic and pragmatic — every decision he makes gets him a step closer to leaving Henrietta; their quest for Glendower is a means to an end; he's the only one actively thinking of a future after Glendower. Adam serves as the voice of reason among their friends; he's focused on facts, on tangible proof, on what he can accomplish. Adam is stubbornly proud — he refuses to accept anyone's help, resents the way Gansey treats him like an object, and is determined to be who he is and to do things on his own. Adam's inferior Se shows up in his tendency to indulge in moments of uncharacteristic recklessness now and again, like when he wakes the ley line and sacrifices himself to Cabeswater.
Ronan Lynch: ISFP
“Ronan loved it so much. He nearly couldn’t bear it. He wanted to destroy something.”
Ronan's emotions are intense; his anger simmers, burns, and rages, and tends to express itself in destructive ways. He loathes talking about what he's feeling and rarely shares his secrets with others until he sees no other choice. Ronan does what he wants; he acts before he can think, indulges in dangerous sensory impulses regardless of the consequences. He does what he deems is right and has a quiet way of caring about the people closest to him (he dreams a bottle of hand cream for Adam) Ronan's grasp of the abstract and the unexplained is adequate; he learned to operate within the dream world by himself. Occasionally, he follows through with his instincts. He gets caught up in his sole explanation for a situation (he realizes Blue knows Gansey from the recording; he suspects he pulled Cabeswater from his dreams) but he ends up being right each time.

hcs abt Ashely bc i had no major significant feelings abt her while reading the books but now you're actually making me INVESTED
I took so long to answer this yikes sorry!! And okay so I guess I don’t so much have Ashley headcanons as I have conflicting Ashley-adjacent hopes and dreams and speculations
Anyway, so we have this girl who is likely more or less surprisingly self educated on Welsh history, happens to live relatively close to a dead Welsh king’s burial ground, is dating the one Aglionby student who HAPPENS to be running a black market magical objects business, who also is apparently a notorious serial dater but she ropes him in for long enough that they’re still together months later during TRK, also does not seem to give a fuck that he’s apparently very obviously cheating on her, and purposely plays up this shallow and ignorant persona in all of her interactions that we see, but also has at least some understanding of Welsh history and feminism within the Catholic Church?? so she’s probably pretty educated and intelligent
Also she can see ghosts, which is probably a plot hole because TDT describes her as not looking at Noah at all and I have to assume that that’s meant to imply that she can’t see him, but in the first book she SHAKES HIS HAND so. She had her reasons for not looking at him even if she could see him. She’s unknowable.
So, what does this all mean? I don’t know. But these are my top theories:
She has something to do with the whole magical artifacts trade thing. I don’t know WHAT exactly, but like… she’s stated to be playing Declan, so to what end? My guess is to the “spying on you and your whole black market magic business” end. Also, if she has a tie to this whole world of magic in general, then her knowing about dead Welsh kings doesn’t seem far off either. It would make sense to want to do a bit of research about the area, especially if her motivations are connected to keeping an on the Lynches, and you KNOW Gansey has to be publishing his research somewhere online. The whole scene with Ashley and Declan in TRB is kind of weird - why would he take his girlfriend to go look at his brother’s weird friends? But if Ashley nudged him into taking him with her because she wanted to go have a look at this guy who thinks there are magic kings sleeping in the ground… *shrugs* I’m just saying
Ashley is just a fashionable nerd with a passion for history and feminism but isn’t always the best at articulating herself in an intelligent sounding way. She probably at least partially believes in magic though, because I refuse to let the seeing ghosts things go. She’s affiliated with magic SOMEHOW, even if it’s just from living in the most supernaturally town ever or from having a boyfriend who’s routinely moving magical shit around in his car.
She’s a lesbian. This is based on nothing other than her iconic lack of investment in her relationship with Declan.
Theory 1 or Theory 2 COMBINED with Theory 3.
That’s all, idk. I like Ashley a lot but don’t have a lot of concrete headcanons and theories on her because my main thing with her is that she’s a character with a lot of potential that didn’t really end up going anywhere and I hope we findd out more in The Dreamer Trilogy! That being said, if anyone has any Ashley thoughts I would LOVE to hear them!

Favorite Friendships Pick #2 : The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
Tumblr media
Much like The witchlands; I consider The Raven Cycle to be a serie about friendship. You can disagree, but to me it’s first about that and then after it’s about tons of other stuffs that have no place in this post (but they will probably be brought up in future ones ^^)
I’m gonna try to be organized and not just ramble incoherently for the whole post :) And obviously, there will be quotes! Who’s surprised?
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the whole group! I love this group! They’re a bunch of teenagers who are looking for a dead welsh king because... Because one of them his obsessed and they don’t question it too much and just go with the flow? I don’t care that this is magical realism, this friendship is the most relatable thing ever!
“You can be just friends with people, you know," Orla said. "I think it's crazy how you're in love with all those raven boys." Orla wasn't wrong, of course. But what she didn't realize about Blue and her boys was that they were all in love with one another. She was no less obsessed with them than they were with her, or one another, analyzing every conversation and gesture, drawing out every joke into a longer and longer running gag, spending each moment either with one another or thinking about when next they would be with one another. Blue was perfectly aware that it was possible to have a friendship that wasn't all-encompassing, that wasn't blinding, deafening, maddening, quickening. It was just that now that she'd had this kind, she didn't want the other.” ― Maggie Stiefvater, Blue Lily, Lily Blue
Frankly, I agree with you Blue. And seeing you becoming friend with those boys and then exploring all the things that ties this group together was awesome.
The plot in this serie is not the most convoluted which is perfect because it leaves more room for the character development and the relationships (and the beautiful writing ^^). And since I love the characters so much I really enjoy seeing them interact and forming habits. Like who seats were in the camaro. I liked that the dynamic of the group changed so much between books but the bonds between them are stronger than before.
I wanna bring up two specific relationships here
First Adam and Gansey. Because for a bit I thought their friendship wouldn’t survive the serie. They come from very different background; Gansey is very privileged while Adam’s family is poor and his dad beats him. Gansey and Adam don’t always see eye to eye. Sometimes Gansey wants to help Adam and maybe he doesn’t do it in the best way. And sometimes they have trouble seeing the other’s point of view. But in the end they build a strong friendship. They did not end up hating each other like I feared. They make it work and it makes me very happy!
Tumblr media
But now onto my fave : Ronan and Blue. First; Ronan became my favorite character from the moment he was described for the first time. I just like this type of character who seems all tough and shit but is actually super caring. And I really enjoy Blue too. I love how she is a bit weird and that her dream for a future is so realistic in the middle of this magical serie. I love how down to Earth she is while surrounded by all this weirdness. Anyhow, those two have strong personalities and they do not mesh well at first. Blue only sees the punk exterior and Ronan is unwilling to share his friends and open to a new person. But then they slowly get closer... Until...
“To think you could have been dreaming the cure for cancer," Blue said. "Look, Sargent," Ronan retorted, "I was gonna dream you some eye cream last night since clearly modern medicine's doing jack shit for you, but I nearly had my ass handed to me by a death snake from the fourth circle of dream hell, so you're welcome." Blue was appropriately touched. "Ah, thanks, man." "No problem, bro.” ― Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King
Let me cry/laugh for a second? This is the snarky kind of friendship that I want more of. I like when friends are secure enough in their friendship to act like they dislike each other. They both know they don’t. But an outsider would not get it. AND IT IS THE BEST!!!! So clearly I need to see more of this in the Ronan centric books we’re getting ^^
Tumblr media
Also : Maura; Persephone and Calla. I can’t not mention them. They’re my role models? They don’t care what people think and they’re just three friends living together and looking into the future because they’re also cool like that. Basically : they’re great and the proof that friends are important at any age! Not just when you’re a teenager.

YOU’VE GOT MAIL –>RICHARD GANSEY III.

“ oh, I know... ” gansey sighed as he looked at the book in front of him, notes being written maticulously ( and seemingly without effort at the same time ) into the the notebook next to him. he set the pen down, shaking his head as he readjusted his glasses carefully. “ it just seems like im chasing after something ive already found, and I cant help but wonder if im wasting my time... ” sure, the memory of finding glendower was hazy, at best, but there was no denying it happened. he could feel it in his bones -- he’d awoken the king before. he’d just have to do it again, all from scratch, and part of him was excited ( again ?? could it be again if he didn’t fully remember the first time ?? ) while the other part of him was questioning why he should do it again when he already had once.

gansey grinned at her, nodding with relief on his face as he watched the ball of yarn roll, roll, roll away, unravelling as it went. he just needed more for his map, to trace out the ley lines and where they were in relation to them now -- if they were even anywhere near them. and, while he was at a craft store, figured he’d aught to get more glue and scissors and various other crafting things for his late night project of building the town in cardboard in his bedroom when he couldn’t sleep. “ oh, that’d be brilliant. ” he sighed, looking down at the stuff in his arms. “ I guess I should’ve gotten a basket after all ?? ” he joked, shaking his head a bit. “ thank you. ”
