Like, honestly… Lucanis is either deeply in love (platonic) or deeply in love (romantic) depending on your personal playthrough. He and Rook are each other’s Ride or Die partner.

Their relationship is this game’s version of my Lavellan and Dorian. They will travel the 7 circles of Hell for one another. Hurt them and Die. Defend each other to the death. Take on would-be Gods together and will either be together or are besties for LIFE.

I think it's funny how Lucanis' "Rook is at low health" lines are INSTANTLY just full protect mode. Davrin just says "Get out of there idiot." Taash has one that's literally just "Rub some dirt in it" meanwhile I've known Lucanis for two seconds and he's screaming "ROOK!!!" "HELP ROOK!!!" "ROOK I'M COMING!!!!!" "HOLD ON ROOK!!!!!!"

I know people love the idea of Spite having romantic feelings for Rook, but I really love the idea of platonic Spite and Rook just bonding as Lucanis sleeps (with Lucanis’s full permission, he rests easier knowing Rook is there to watch over them and Spite really does behave better with Rook entertaining it). When Lucanis sleeps next to Rook, Spite takes controls but then it gets to ask questions that Lucanis can’t or won’t answer, like:

Why can’t we eat candles?

Why do candles smell good if not for eating?

What other things can’t we eat?

Why are things poisonous?

What happens when mortals die?

Rook can’t always answer them, but Rook will do their best to look up the answers in the morning and report back to Spite, much to Spite’s delight. Once Lucanis teaches Spite Wicked Grace, Rook actually does play with the demon and teaches it tricks and tips on how to play better (mostly cheating).

Rook even will find poetry and art books for Spite since it seems to enjoy them and Spite will spend hours looking at them. Eventually Rook gets Spite some paints and paper and Lucanis wakes up with his hands covered in paint and very abstract art spread around them. Rook tries to get Spite to use a brush but it prefers hands, eventually they are able to trick Spite into spitefully agreeing to at least wash the hands after it’s done.

Spite really starts to understand the world as it gets time to learn and interact with Rook and Rook finds themselves enjoying this time too.

Sobbing over the torte

So, I have now made the Nevarran Hazlenut Torte from DA: Veilguard and I can confirm that a) it will definitely pair well with coffee and b) that cake is a labour of LOVE.

Set aside the fact that you need to separate eight - yes, eight - eggs and think for a minute about how much your wrist and shoulders will hurt once you’ve creamed eight yolks into sugar until pale and whisked eight egg whites into stiff peaks BY HAND. I used an electric whisk and both stages took a good 10 minutes each.

And that’s before you grind a small mountain of hazelnuts in, presumably, a pestle and mortar.

Honestly, the care and attention that would have to go into making this cake without recourse to electric kitchen aids really does make this an A-grade romantic gesture and I think that a beautiful level of detail.

A personal headcanon, but I like to imagine that while carrying out particularly dangerous contracts post-DATV, a married Rook and Lucanis would ask Davrin to look after/protect their kids in the lighthouse “just in case.”

And Davrin, known affectionately as “Uncle Davrin” by the kids, would let them sleep in his bed with him if they got scared, or when the days start to stretch on and on and the kids start to worry they’ll never see their parents again. (Davrin reassures them by telling them stories of the time Rook fought an archdemon, or not one but two blighted dragons, and the time Lucanis stabbed a literal god, so it would take a lot more than some bumbling antaam to kill them.)

And maybe, sometimes, other members of the Veilguard would drop by the lighthouse just because they do, and they would help entertain and cook for the kids while they’re there, and Davrin has unique codewords and pass-phrases with everyone to make sure they’re really who they say they are and not, you know, a demon in disguise.

And always, before Rook leaves, Davrin promises he’ll take care of the kids no matter what happens, but nothing will happen, of course, because Rook will come back. They have to come back. And Lucanis is too stubborn to die. Everything will be fine.

And everything is fine, until one night, maybe a few weeks into a contract that was only supposed to take a few days, when Davrin discovers one of the kids has a letter addressed to him. And he reads it, even though he’s not supposed to. Because it’s a will, and Rook and Lucanis have left everything to Davrin, so he can take care of the kids, and he’s named their guardian in bold black letters, and after seeing that, Davrin is never the same again.

So when Rook and Lucanis finally do come back, a little worse for wear, a little bloody, a little bruised, Davrin hugs them. And that’s just how it is.

Davrin’s friendship with Rook and Lucanis just means a lot to me, okay?
