So, I'm writing a long fanfic based around the characterizations of the various Bats in the 80s-00s time frame, and Nightwing is gonna be important but I don't have a good grasp of his personality yet. I'm currently reading through The Resurrection of Ras Al Ghul, but that and a few of the 2016 issues are all I've got to go off of right now.

Do you have any comics you'd recommend for getting a good grasp of his personality and general vibes?

I'd also be happy to read any kind of ramble about his personality/appeal you feel like writing. Having read your fanfiction I feel like (sincere compliment:) you are the exact kind of unhinged I want to get character opinions from.

ok first of all. im flattered. i feel so powerful rn.

and second of all... my 'to read' list is embarrassingly long, and dick's been around and in a lot of comics so i have a lot of trouble keeping up ;-; but i will try my best!!

The New Teen Titans gets recommended a lot as a starting point for Dick as Nightwing, and while i havent read much of it, the stuff i have read has been pretty solid and i get why its so popular.

Nightwing 1996 is my personal go to comic for Dick, mainly bc it was his first real solo run. (it's often listed as "volume 2" of nightwing, but volume 1 aka Nightwing 1995 was really more of a test drive just to see if they should make a Nightwing solo series) It's also where Dick joins the mob! although that came off the tail end of a lot of different plot points.

(This is a bit unrelated, but in general I think knowing a bit of irl context to certain comic events is important. Like, at one point Bludhaven is nuked off the map. It doesn't make sense, and it was most likely due to some higher up DC nonsense. And Nightwing 1996's second annual is written by a man. etc etc.)

... I actually have a guide I've been working on, main reasons being quick reference for what happens where, and that writing these things down helps me remember them better

Mobbed Up (where Dick gets adopted by a random mob boss who took one look at his depressed mug as he was getting fired from the police force and said "new son?") is issues #107-111

I feel like I should get back to character thoughts.

Dick on his own is deeply serious, he has a job to do and it's incredibly important that he does it right. In the beginning this serves as an invaluable asset, but as he loses more people it starts to turn into more destructive. A trait that is morphed by his traumas into obsessiveness.

Dick when Tim comes to visit (or just when he's around people he cares about) is a bit softer, it's subtle, but it shows that he's aware of/cares for the people around him.

Dick with Bruce around seems to worry so much about proving himself, about being seen as a respectable peer, that it backfires into making him come off more insecure and as a bit of a "rebellious teen". (which is exactly what he's trying to avoid when he strikes out on his own) I've read various arcs and issues but I haven't actually read any focused on Dick and Bruce aside from the ones towards the beginning, so I'm sure their relationship must change, but this is how they were when Dick had first moved to Blud.

I feel like Bludhaven is also important to talk about. It's very much meant to be "Gotham, but worse". It's a place that even Batman wouldn't bother with, a place beyond saving. I'm... kind of breaking my own heart, thinking about how much Dick put into this city, only to. To fail? In a sense? A hero's home city isn't usually obliterated like that. The only other example that comes to mind is Hal Jordan's, and Hal literally went insane and became a space terrorist to bring it back. Dick is just... forced to move on.

And Dick goes back to NYC. Nightwing patrolling Gotham with any regularity feels very modern. He shows up when there's a major event and DC wants to capitalize on having a bunch of names in the same series, and he shows up when something drastic changes (like a new robin, or a death). Dick has however spent a lot of time in NYC, either because of the Titans or because. yknow. home go boom.

Anyways. Arc recs. Unironically I need you to read Brothers in Blood. Get past the initial gross out factor of Tentatodd and it's a great look at Jason and Dick's relationship. This is #118-122 and right after Bludhaven gets nuked. Dick has just experienced the lowest lows that one could low. Jason seems to know all about it, and tries to help in the worst way possible. Jason is right and blunt and convoluted and so so insecure about where he stands with Dick. Dick doesn't know where he stands with Jason either, on account of all the murder, and his tactless approach to trying to confront Dick on the copious amounts of trauma that Dick is dealing with. BiB is my Jaydick bible.

I'd also say to just give the first few arcs a shot. Beginnings are meant for introductions! It gives a good sense of who Dick is, why he's here, and what his goals are. Exposition baby! And I'm once again thinking about how ultimately Dick kind of fails said goals. I love him but he makes me so emo. Blockbuster has also been his main villain since the beginning, up until. Yknow. He became deader than his namesake. There's also a few fear toxin based issues that are good for. well. understanding what his fears are. There's also a fear toxin scene in Batman: Orphans, but i'll just reblog the post i made of it so u don't have to read that one. The art is fun, the story is weird and just kinda. meh.

#60 is when Dick joins the force. The beginning of the end, so to speak, but we don't meet Catalina until #71.

#93 is That Issue. The infamous rape scene. The thing about his time with Catalina is that it was almost definitely meant to be explored for what it was- an abusive relationship. But DC wanted Nightwing in an event. It doesn't have any satisfactory end, Bruce (DC) calls Dick to fight in Gotham. He does. His story falls to the wayside for the bigger title. The worst thing that can happen to a DC character IMO is getting a Batman crossover. There was supposed to be an entire arc dedicated to what would happen to Dick in this abusive relationship. But we got 2 issues. And War Games. It pisses me off to absolutely no end. DC needed more mouths to kiss the ground that Batman walks on. They don't give a damn about the stories that exist outside their cash cow.

After all that, eventually Dick is back to his utterly depressing life. He joins the mob, finds a family, bad things happen to said family. (Mobbed Up, #107-111) He wants to protect the daughter, Sophia Tevis, and then Slade holds Sophia hostage to get Dick to teach his daughter Rose how to fight. He does, but he also teaches Rose how to question authority (aka her dad). Slade is not happy about that, and nukes Bludhaven. (Renegade, #112-117) See my earlier note about IRL reasons for dumbass plot points.

Nightwing 1996 has 2 annual issues (despite running for much longer than 2 years). The first annual is a fun murder mystery and i think a good look into how Dick handles relationships. He also reads as very aromantic/demiromantic who doesn't know it yet, but maybe that's just me, lol. the second annual is dog shit. Mark Andreyko can get bent, it sucked total ass and isn't worth reading.

I've changed it from a retcon to - well, that would be spoilers. actually it wouldn't be because by the time this fic gets to S3... uhh... we have to get past Mordremoth for that bc it was Mordy's death that kicked off the Bloodstone that kicked off the White Mantle stuff that kicked off the Lazarus/Balthazar stuff that kicked off PoF, and let's just say... I'm anticipating we never get around to that. we'll see ig but I have probably an IRL decade's worth of stuff planned before I get there. anyway the headcanon is that Jennah had reasons for changing her mind, and Logan totally deserved it, but that's a whole separate post. storyline or character study or smth) ANYWAY THE FIC IS ABOUT LOGAN IN THE PRESENT-DAY. I also have some Rytlock stuff planned but have been questioning the point of it. (I'll probably include it as, like, side stories and not part of the main fic at least, lol)

also can i just say, i very much appreciate you asking this. i would much rather more people speak up and be like "hey, we dont know the best way to support our favorite writers so how can we?" other than just. Not Knowing and Not Doing Anything.

so, im going to speak from my own personal experience but also what ive seen many of my mutuals/writers i follow talk about. this might get a little long but i wanna answer as thoroughly as i can because people should know!

im putting it under a read more because it got hella long, but please i encourage everyone who reads fics but don't interact to read and consider these things.

fellow writers i encourage you to reblog and add any other commentary you think is helpful!

before anything else (this is absolutely not directed at you, anon, you're perfect), i just want to get this out of the way. never come to a writer's blog and get angry with them for complaining about lack of engagement. like jesus christ. writers are putting hours of work on tumblr for you for free. the least we ask is for comments and reblogs. that's it. if you go and act shitty towards writers who ask for more engagement, yet still follow and wait for the next fic, like what are you even doing bro. just stop.

anyway. now let's get to the actual question!

basically all writers on tumblr will agree, reblogs are vital. and i feel like that gets said a lot but maybe people dont actually understand how impactful it is so lemme give an example.

so let's say hypothetically i have 100 followers. that is 100 potential people who see a fic that i post (i say potential because timezones exist so you might not see it as it's posted)

and let's say one of my followers (Person A) reblogs it, and they have 50 followers. that's 50 more people that can read the fic.

and let's say Person B followers Person A and they also reblog it to their 50 followers.

with only two people reblogging a fic, that's already doubling the number of people who have read the fic.

now imagine Person C followers Person A and reblogs the fic, and Person C has like, 1,000 followers. that's so much more exposure for the writer.

and that's only from two followers of the writer. so imagine if all 100 that read the fic reblogged it? the numbers skyrocket at an exponential rate.

plus, more people reading means that the writer could get more people follow them. so they get a more consistent audience.

likes, on the other hand, do not guarantee this exposure. i would say that most people don't have their likes public on tumblr. and also, even if they do, i know that I'm not about to scroll through people's likes rather than scrolling thru their blogs. likes up the notes, and that's about it. of course i understand liking a fic so you can come back to it later, i do that all the time. but if I've liked a fic, i always reblog it once I've read it.

now, say you're reading hardcore smut that you might not want on your main blog for whatever reason, so that's why you don't reblog a fic. look, i get it. sometimes irl people follow your blog, or sometimes you just don't want people to know what you're getting up to. but that's why i made a sideblog specifically for fics.

this entire blog BEGAN as a way for me to reblog fics i liked. and then it grew and grew and grew into all this. not saying that you have to start writing if you do that of course, but i guarantee, i'd rather see a small sideblog blog with like 3 followers reblog my fic than a blog just like the fic and leave. because that's still 3 more people who will see my fic and possibly read it and reblog it. 3 is better than none.

comments. reblogs are important, but comments are really what keep writers writing. they inspire us with new ideas, help figure out what it is that people enjoy from us, help us improve our writing, and most importantly, they make us feel good. and like writing and posting is worth it.

now, i know that sometimes it can feel awkward reblogging with a comment directly on the post. i even usually don't do that unless it's with a friend. but here are some alternatives/tips!

send an ask or DM! if you're really intimidated, sending an anonymous message is by far the easiest way to bypass that awkwardness.

write in the tags!! i cannot express this enough. comment in the tags. ramble about the fic. just put three tags worth of screaming. literally ANY comments in the tags are my favorite thing. i promise you that writers will scroll thru like basically every tag.

also, if they post it on both tumblr and ao3, don't feel weird about giving a little comment on both! i do that all the time. you can even be like 'hey i read this on tumblr first but wanted to say again how much i enjoyed it' and that is like, heart burstingly nice to hear.

also, if you're having trouble coming up with something to say, my like top commenting tip as both a writer and a reader is point out something specific that you like about the fic. when i comment on a fic (this is moreso when i comment on ao3 bc my comments are always longer there) i try to point out a particular line i like. literally if you just copy and paste it and go 'wow i really really like this line especially' that is the number one way to a writer's heart. seriously. it's the simplest thing, but it makes SUCH an impact.

however, if your comments are only asking for more fics, then that's not a comment, that's a request (which not all writers take).

saying something like 'hey i loved this fic a lot! if you have more in store for this in the future, i'd be really excited to read it!' is a million times better than 'will you do a part 2'. i know they don't sound that different, but i promise you that the tone makes a big difference.

(i honestly have more thoughts about good ways to get over commenting fear/know what exactly to comment that doesn't feel generic, so if people would like me to make another post about it i'd do it.)

and last but not least, if the writer has a way to donate, like a ko-fi, that always is so appreciated. of course, take care of yourself first, but if you have a few bucks and wanna show some support to your faves, that's a great way to help :)

oh! also, if the writer ever reblogs those little ask game things, just send them something! engagement outside of writing is also so much appreciated.

Putting this on my sideblog bc this person knows my main but yesterday I got, IDK what to call it but this couple from Lex (who also dropped the "I'm plural" bomb on me within like 5 hours of chatting with them on discord which was mega awkward) cut off contact with me for an Extremely Online reason (I don't like callout posts, was the main one) and I checked their blog and they're arguing with people about how they're not very online people. Like ok LMAO. For the record I made a post about how I think callout posts with no substance are stupid bc sometimes people just kinda are annoying and that's fine, and they literally DMed me to be like "but I made a callout about my ex roommate" which also, after my investigation, turned out to be exactly the kind of callout I was criticizing except 10x more dramatic

Anyway the second thing is that I have a friend who has this like. Person who's OBSESSED with them (I'll call friend L and the person J) and L finally got the courage to be like "you're making me really uncomfortable leave me alone" and J had the audacity to respond to the message with essentially "hi I'm J's alter, I know you don't like J so you don't have to hang out with him and you can hang out with me instead :)" like NO that's literally not the move. Presently I have 3 tumblr accounts I have any possible intention on using: 

my personal ( mainblog: skykinks ) which I use to follow IRL folks, artblogs, and other junk. It’s really messy, though, and I don’t log on as much as I want to. It also sort of acts as the ‘holding’ place for all my inactive sideblogs so I don’t have to feel guilty looking at URLs I’m not active on. Also currently the home of my artblog, which is a sideblog.

main RP account ( mainblog: pirequehideux ) which I use for general RP purposes. Great and all, but all my follows come from one RP blog which is currently in desperate need of an overhaul.

side RP account ( mainblog: marmoriites ) which is a??? RP account I made to house all my anime RP shit ( which is frankly mostly Voltron ), and while I really love the worldbuilding I did there, and am really happy with my muses, I don’t like the fandom and don’t feel like reaching out so... these blogs are getting shoved in the graveyard but I don’t want to abandon all the work? marmoriites started out as a sideblog and shouldn’t be TOO hard to move back to one, that way I can at least keep my #branding and my content easily accessible.

Between the first two accounts, I have-- a SHITTON of sideblogs. ( though I’m putting my full blog list here, just so all my info is in one spot )

pirequehideux - Altered Plot Phantom of the Opera. Needs a bit of a characterization overhaul. Might??? Go quiet for a while as I want to use my version of the story to make an actual graphic novel for publishing, since Leroux’s book is open license and I’ve literally written my own version!

tidehearted - Age of Sail multimuse. Not going anywhere, just needs to be polished & have some muses added.

ferrousstars - Panfandom multi for muses that don’t fit anywhere else, or whose fandoms I avoid getting too deep in. I’ve also been using it to sort of store some RPC type stuff?? Needs muses added, might have more going on- but that’ll be below.

neutralreborn - Tolkien AU Melkor. Needs a bit of a re-vamp for characterization.

forgedinflame - Tolkien Gothmog/Kosomot who might as well be an OC for all the character development I’ve given him, versus his minimal canon appearances, & has a billion AUs that make him accessible in almost any fandom- except Age of Sail because he fucking hates water. Needs to have more information added.

Things I have been thinking about/wanting to do with my blogs/blogs I’ve been considering running:

fashion blog? - I always find gorgeous outfits/dresses/shoes/accessories/etc and think “I know I’m going to use this!!!” but have no immediate use for it so it sits in my likes for years bc I don’t have anywhere to stow it where it won’t get lost?? So I’ve been contemplating a fashion blog, or perhaps a set of fashion tags on that aesthetic blog, idk, to store stuff like that. Happening regardless of what big choice I make, but whether it’ll be a new set of tags when I revamp the aesthetic blog or a blog unto itself is to be determined.

RPH - I want to have a solid place to collect useful info, writing tips, memes I can’t use immediately but want to in the future, and possibly even answer questions for newbies or something like that. I don’t want to go super serious with a big RPH blog, but it would be nice to have somewhere to dump all my resources so they’re not scattered across blogs.

Just wanted to do these questions hehe ;w;

1. What kind of blog does your f/o have? Do they selfship on main? Do they look like a regular fan? Quiet reblogs or lots of gushing? Lots of analyses of your character and your source or incoherent blabbering? Do they have a headcanon blog? Do they try to roleplay as you?

Ren is shameless and only has like one sideblog that he reserves for creative stuff. He posts everything else onto his main blog. He also gushes a lot just lots of keysmashing and talking about how cute I am, and not a lot of analyses just tons of blabbering. He posts all his headcanons on his main blog and frequently tags pictures with our ship name if they remind him of us.

2. Do they prefer selfshipping by inserting themselves into your source, or by daydreaming about you in their own little / personal world, or by imagining you by their side during their daily life?

He definitely daydreams about me in his own little world especially before bed and also imagines me by his side during his daily life. He would probably insert himself into my source as well bc he's not satisfied with where he is in his life. He just wants to do everything.

3. What’s their self insert like? Is their s/i literally them? Is it basically them but with just a few changes - to be more like the person they’d like to be, or to “fit in” your source better? Is their s/i totally OP or extra or more realistic? Is it an OC that’s totally different from them?

His s/i is literally him. He doesn't change parts of himself to fit into my source or to be more like he wants to be because he uses self-shipping as coping and wants me to love him for him.

4. Do they spend more time on wikipedia, on your fandom wiki, on your TV tropes page? Looking for official content they might’ve missed, like fun trivia? Looking for fanart, for fics? Looking for information and details and references for fics or art or other fancontent they’re making because they want to make sure they get everything right?

He's definitely a fandom wiki kind of guy and scours the internet for content. He doesn't need to look at references that much because he has me memorized pretty easily. There are multiple looks I've gone through in "canon" and while he loves all of them and it's hard to remember all of them, he tends to stick with the one that's most currently out in canon because it makes him feel like he's living beside me.

5. Do they create anything inspired by you and/or their ship with you? Fanart? Fanfics? Gifsets? Moodboards? Edits? Songs? Dances? Crafts? Playlists? Cosplays? Do they post them (or pictures of them) online? Do they sell any merch (online, at cons, etc)? Do they make pics of their selfship in dollmakers? Do they spend hours on otp prompt generators? He creates fanart but doesn't draw much anymore and is kind of sad about it because he misses how much he used to draw. Instead he tends to write fic and create songs and playlists. He posts his music and stuff online on his sideblog for creative stuff and doesn't sell merch when he goes to cons. Because he doesn't draw as much anymore he LOVES making us in dollmakers and picrews. He also commissions a shit ton of art for his selfship and is completely shameless about it.

6. Does your f/o have a selfship wedding with you? Do they celebrate it on their blog or more privately, with their fellow selfshipper friends? Do they make any content (like art, fics, etc) to celebrate?

He wrote a song to propose with and is waiting for anime canon to catch up to his favorite part from the manga before posting it and making a huge deal about it. When he does have the wedding he commissions a really extravagant wedding picture and has it framed and put in his room.

7. Does your f/o have fankids with you? If not, maybe pets?

We own a dog and he wants to have kids when we get married so he can cope with his anxieties of being a bad father.

Oh god lmao. So like I was doing this for Ren, but imagining everyone in a discord server is killing me!!! Vincent would do nothing but post porn gifs and be an absolute butt and laugh at people all the time and Jack would like never talk in it except to post the occasional psychological profile of me and talk about how interesting I am every once in a blue moon. Gengar would just cry type all the time. Craig would shitpost with memes and laugh at people because he’s a dick and not actually into self-shipping and Shino would analyze EVERYTHING from the show. The people who would gush and talk the most would be Ren and Omen ;w; Ren would share his music and Omen would think it's all very interesting. Omen might even develop a crush because Ren is so interesting and Ren would be completely oblivious bc he’s guzzling that self-ship juice lmao.

Ren likes the ship name Rae and uses that irl, but he likes to do the fun creative ones in order to tag stuff. He uses "Little Star" for it.

11. What’s your f/o like when they read / watch / play your source? Do they reread / rewatch / replay their favorite parts over and over? Do they make comments aloud? Which parts of your story made them laugh? Made them cry?

Ren gets really happy when he watches the anime because it's very relaxing. He watches his favorite parts over and over and over again until he can say the dialogue by heart. He doesn't make comments aloud but he gets super emotionally invested. His favorite parts that make him laugh are when I say goofy or dumb things and then comment on the irony and break the 4th wall. The parts that make him cry the most are any time I get hurt and start crying. When I got bullied or felt bad with my classmates or was hurt when I was very young. All of those hurt him a lot and he cried about it.

12. Do they post any videos related to your source? Like AMVs? Or reaction vids (with them reacting to your source as they read / watch / play / etc)? If your source is a game, do they make a walkthrough? Is it a perfect walkthrough, a more casual one?

He would like to make AMVs but doesn't really have editing software for it, but wants to learn! He wants to post reaction vids but is nervous about posting his face online for...reasons. lmao

Ren would definitely call himself my biggest fan. He wouldn't use husband but he'd definitely use fanboy.

He has a plush that he cuddles and sleeps with and sometimes makes out with lmao. He also has so much merch!!! He is the type to make ita content. On Christmas he decorates the tree with stuff and has posters all over the walls. His favorites tho are figures. He looooooooves figures the most. He's constantly shelling out the big bucks for the biggest and most detailed ones because he can look at them and feel like I exist in a 3d space.

When he gets unstable and lonely he plays out angsty situations to further his spirals. He knows it's unhealthy, but it comforts him at the same time. His favorite when he's feeling like being healthier is making irl AUs where he can play out his trauma with me as a caretaker figure or alongside him and comforting me.

Ren definitely hoards a lot of shit on his phone, he has so much content of me on it it's ridiculous. If you've been following me for... More than a week, then you've surely noticed that I was on hiatus for quite some time and for a good reason. (I'm sure we'd all like to forget that thing I'm talking about, but... Uh yeah that's not something I'll ever forget I think) I got more invested in some of my main fandoms (if you don't know: this is a sideblog I made because bfu is NOT one of my main fandoms), I had some stuff to deal with irl and I just honestly didn't want to spend an unnecessary amount of anger and energy on a fandom I'm not even that integrated in. I still watched all kinds of bfu content and other buzzfeed stuff, it's actually very easy to enjoy them outside of the fandom Ive found out. And then the new season started and I was like "well, I still have my blog, why not cautiously dip back into the fandom?" and it was going very well initially. I knew whom to avoid, I had basically blocked half the fandom already so I knew nobody bad would interact with me. And then I saw Sara's tweet and got so mad. Like, obviously I KNEW people hadn't just changed and seen how weird they were being just because I (and let's be fair: a lot of other people, too) told them months ago that not everyone is OK with the things you're putting out there and to specifically put them on the radar of one of them is... I don't know what to say about that.

So I made another scolding post and that obviously hit a nerve again, because a lot of people agreed with it and thanked me for it. And I've Said so in the past, again and again, I do not actually like making these posts. It makes me feel pretentious and way too much like the type of fandom mom I don't want to be.

Yeah anyways, I'm not gonna repeat the exact same stuff I wrote in another, very wordy, text post already.

What im trying to say is, after I made that post I, very unwisely, decided to creep a little and checked on the part of the fandom I've blocked (always a bad idea) and jfc. Uuuugggghhhhh. So many horrible horrible takes. And SO many people actively shading and hating each other wtf. (before you accuse me of anything, bc I know that has happened before, I did not at any point contact any of them. No ims, no asks, no anons. In fact I'm sure most of them have me blocked since last time.) if you've never really been in another fandom, let me tell you this: this amount of bad takes and straight up hate is not normal. I'm in like 10 other fandoms, both big and small, and ALL have fandom beef and fandom queens who think they're above all or smth and all have a group of bad ppl, but not like this. Not this percentage. In no other fandom I've felt like I couldn't safely reblog like half of the stuff in the main tag bc I don't want to accidentally reblog from someone who has horrible opinions? (and that is mainly due to the fact that I'm very extra about the ppl I reblog from, I'm aware of that)

I of course have met a lot of lovely people, too. There is a decent amount of people I trust bc they've either reached out to me personally or whom I've noticed to have the same opinions as me and I tend to stick with them and have seen that they stick with each other too. There is a very pronounced sense of us vs them mentality in this fandom and a lot of people think that's bad (because everyone in the fandom should stick together uwu this fandom is drama free uuuwwuuu), but I don't? I'm glad to see people actively cutting people they don't like out of their Tumblr experience, bc that's a healthy and smart thing to do.

So now I'm finally arriving at the point and am gonna tell you what this very long speech is about: I wanted to thank the part of the fandom who are decent people and continuously trying to keep the fandom a good place. I come here every few weeks, make a big wuss and vanish again, but there are people who do that all the time, because they care a lot more than I do. I went from initially not knowing a single person in this fandom to knowing whom to avoid and more importantly whom to follow. I don't interact with any of you a lot, but I think you're cool and I hope you feel at home in this fandom.

I can't explain why there is such a big part in this fandom that is just so... Twisted and I don't understand, because the boys would deserve more fans like you, who are respectful of their boundaries and know when a line is fucking crossed.

I'm gonna stay semi active on this blog and you know I will complain as soon as I see dumbassery despite saying how much I hate it. And I'll continue to follow you guys and rely on your good content.

i feel like my only contribution to this fandom as of late is to be a scolding semi-present entity that only materialises whenever there’s some calling out to do and i HATE it.
