there's something very sneaky about the fact that Suzanne Collins specifically chooses Prim to be the character that says this to Katniss, in these exact words. Earlier in the book, Finnick says something on a similar vein to Katniss and it would have made just as much sense for him to reiterate the idea. But having Prim, instead, convey the message that killing Peeta is the only way left to hurt Katniss - diabolical of Suzanne. Because, yes, that WOULD be true. If Snow wasn't the only enemy. If there wasn't the other side of the coin. Katniss, Prim, and everyone else presume that the only person left that can be used against Katniss is Peeta. But that's not true and Coin knows it. She knows that she has the only other person she can truly hurt Katniss with - Prim.

a big part of the reason why effie shielded herself behind a character was probably to protect proserpina too.
and in the end, prosie probably died during the war anyway. just like prim did.
and it was haymitch's turn to comfort both katniss and effie through the same pain he felt when he was only 16.
thg & siblings love, you're so dear and tragic to me.

Am I the only one who, for some reason, can't not constantly think about the memorials Katniss references in the epilogue?
"The arenas have been completely destroyed, the memorials built."
Is there a memorial for all the children who were murdered in the hunger games? All 1,725 of them? Did someone manage to dig up the names of all the past tributes? Can Haymitch go to the capitol and run his fingers over the L in Louella's name? Can Katniss look at Rue's name, engraved in something permanent?
Is there a memorial for all the rebel soldiers who died while fighting the capitol? Does Finnick's name reside right next to Prim's on a big glossy slab of marble or granite?

reading the hunger games again when you know how it ends is genuinely devastating. chapter 2 of book 1, katniss saying “hadn’t i done everything?” in the context of prim’s name getting pulled in the reaping. but it applies for the rest of the series too. hadn’t she done everything? hadn’t she done everything to keep her sister safe and yet she still lost her?

In Mockingjay, Prim is really proving that she is Katniss' sister. Her mouthing off to the adults for Katniss when she can't is such a wonderful moment. I mean, tragic scene, but Primrose Everdeen, you will always be famous.

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.
#katniss everdeen#the hunger games trilogy#the hunger games#primrose everdeen#hunger games#batcavescolony reads the hunger games#suzanne collins#'now it seems i have become someone precious' NOW? GIRL BFFR you're their hunter girl#and this isn't negative just bffr girl#your WHOLE DISTRICT did the three finger salute that you yourself says means admiration thanks and goodbye to someone you love and on top is#old a rarely used. your WHOLE DISTRICT decided in that moment that they needed to bring back this sign of respect for YOU#...................................................................#idk why some people are thinking i mean this as negative i don't she is unreliable but its not intentional. like when Peeta heart stoped in#CF she doesn't know what Finnick is doing at first cus she doesn't know off the top of her head what cpr is. she also thinks Peeta after the#reaping is acting for the cameras. he isnt we dind out later his mom basically told him Katniss was gonna win and he would die. obviously#shes not doing it on purpose shes just for lack of better words uneducated? as in she doesn't know everything shes not omnipotent#so when Plutarch (? second games guy) shows her his mokingjay hiden watch shes like *wtf that's weird?* then the people traveling to#district 13 show her the mockingjay cookie and explains it and she then goes on the difference between his watch and their cookie#and why does eveyone act as if district 12 is as bad as the capital? they CANT help Katniss and Prim in the way you want. they cant give#them food. none of them have any! and im not putting iton Katniss but they hid they needed food so they could stay together. it sounds like#some of you are in this our world mentally of what people do after a loved one dies (brings food constantly checks on them etc) district 12#cant do that. they dont have food and they're all suffering. you cant give someone food when you have none to give. then theirs the fact#that peeta DID help. Peeta buring the bread and tossing some to her then taking a beating from his mom is a HUGE thing in the books.#he used his resources to help her like you all said someone should.#district 12 DID (rip) care about Katniss before the hunger games. why do you think she was allowed to hunt? or how her trades were good#these are the little ways 12 can shows Katniss they love her. but again Katniss doesn't see this and YES its because she had ptsd before the#hunger games as well. i swear some of you make it seem like d12 was all living a life of luxury and glaring down at Katniss.#other things that show Katniss is in hight standing with at least her people of d12 is her dad was known enough through d12 for peeta dad to#comment on his singing along with his commenting on her mom. also her mom is a healer in the community. yeah her parents arnt the top but#of d12 but they are/were definitely high staning in the Seam.

do you guys think the night after katniss (and peeta) won by using the berries and therefore rebelling/outsmarting the capitol, asterid was scared for her and prim? do you think she stayed up all night and made sure there were no ashes in the fireplace? do you think she watched prim and refused to let her out of her sight? remembering sid and willamae abernathy and their horrible, horrible fate and knowing, if president snow decided to hand down that same destiny, she and her child would be powerless to escape.

I think the most radical thing the hunger games does is tell young people that the most revolutionary thing you can do is have unconditional love for humanity. Katniss throughout the entire series is guided by a deep sense of compassion for the people around her. It is what causes her to volunteer, to bury rue, to mercy kill cato, its why she tries to save peeta, why finnick telling her to remember who the real enemy is works, and even though her compassion for the larger world falters when peeta is kidnapped, it comes back when she visits hospitals and asks for mercy for other victors and ultimately, it is love and belief in a better humanity that makes her kill coin. Through it all, she maintains an unfaltering belief in the fundemental goodness of humanity, which is diametrically opposed to dr gaul's and snow's worldview. Peeta is even more unwaveringly compassionate
So the series tells young people that the most revolutionary thing you can be is compassionate. Let compassion drive your politics. Let yourself believe in the fundemental goodness of people. And i think that's deeply important in a world that touts the superiority of pure reason or logic, to allow yourself to be guided by something as emotional as compassion. Katniss everdeen tells us that your politics should be rooted in compassion in a world that thinks detatchment or cynicism is intelligence and i think thats v cool

so you’re telling me that lucy gray’s reaping was rigged, haymitch’s reaping was illegal, and katniss volunteered to save her sister? that they’re only tributes because the capitol forced the covey to remain in district twelve, punished haymitch for trying to protect his girl, and tried to send a little girl to her death? only for it to backfire when the capitol suddenly found themselves with three kids who refused to play by their rules? the three mockingjays of district twelve? you’re telling me that the systems of violence cannot sustain themselves and will always breed rebellion? huh.

I think the most depressing thing about sunrise on the reaping is how it shifts everything we know so far. We spent so long feeling bad for Katniss and Peeta just to find out they didn’t even have the worst of it. The original hunger games trilogy was just the tip of the goddamn ice berg.
I rewatched the first movie and I cried so much harder than usual because I know this was not the first Prim. Not the first Rue. Not by a long shot. And we have no clue the depths of the cruelty.

The moment Tigris tells Snow he looks like his father, my heart broke.
That's her Prim.
That's the child she took care of while being a child herself, stuck with an adult who couldn't care for them all that well. She tried so hard and sacrificed so much for the boy that despite all her love still turns into a monster.
Katniss's Prim dies, but Tigris' Prim destroys every part of the boy she raised, to the point she wants him dead and has nothing in her heart for him except absolute loathing.

although katniss is our protagonist and main character i think there's actually a much more fitting throughline when it comes to the presence of covey girls and their acts of rebellion.
lucy gray
lenore dove
primrose
i don't often see prim mentioned when it comes to covey lineage (most likely because her character is so aligned with their merchant mother in the original trilogy) but all three of these girls actively haunt the narrative.
lucy gray is the ghost whose songs of resistance endure in district 12 long after her name is forgotten. lenore dove paints her posters across the district and its haymitch's promise to her that forces him to keep going, keep fighting back until someone 'just like him but luckier' comes along to do what he couldn't. primrose is reason that katniss volunteers, she inspires a love so great that it defies the odds and brings her sister home.
they all have an immense strength but also an inherent gentleness - their love of animals whether this is lucy gray's snakes or lenore dove's geese or prim's refusal to hunt animals (not to mention lady and buttercup) - they are all drawn to creatures that are not widely seen as valuable or lovable.
they share a deep sense of optimism, each believe in the power of hope to transform one's circumstances. they each believe that a better world is not only possible but they are willing to take action to make it so. lucy gray uses her songs and performances, lenore dove engages in acts of sabotage and vandalises property. prim learns how to heal and chooses to enter a warzone in order to help people - in a world governed by violence, prim is first and foremost a healer.
and ultimately they are all taken from those who love them - they are girls frozen in time, forever filled with colour and light. three generations of covey girls, each doomed by their connection to the games.

Asterid is a large clade of flowering plants, composed of 17 orders and more than 80,000 species — pictured is an echinacea plant, which has long been used in traditional medicine // Burdock, belonging to the Asterid clade, has sticky burrs and heart-shaped leaves and its roots are used for medicine and food // Katniss is an aquatic plant, also known as arrowhead, which grows tubers similar to potatoes // Primrose is a wildflower belonging to the Asterid clade that is valued for its ornamental flowers

just thinking about effie trinket standing on the stage in district 12's square during the 74th reaping, watching a young woman bravely race to take her younger sister's place in the hunger games, thinking back on when she received a frantic phone call from her own younger sister, tears in her voice as she spoke about needing her older sister's help. how effie rushed to her sister's aid, no questions about it, because that's just what older sister's do.
