Lil Dicky - Penith
Here’s an interesting little factoid that you may have never thought about until now: it’s been nine years since Lil Dicky dropped an album. Lil Dicky, real name Dave Burd, has been a busy man in that time, whether it was releasing a few singles or being hard at work with his show on FXX, Dave, which premiered in 2020 and is based on a fictionalized version of his rise to fame. If you’re young enough, or you’re just not familiar with his work, Lil Dicky is one of the first rappers to go viral online, I suppose, as he got huge for dropping songs on YouTube until he released his debut album, 2015’s Professional Rapper. The biggest single from that album, “$ave Dat Money,” featured Rich Homie Quan and Fetty Wap, who were two huge artists at the time, and it was a song that satirized hip-hop’s infatuation with material wealth. He came up around the same time as Bo Burnham, The Lonely Island, and those guys, but because he was funny within his music, LD was labeled as a “comedy rapper,” so he got unfairly lumped into that category. Truth be told, Professional Rapper is a funny album, as a lot of the songs are based around a joke, and have punchlines within them, but I wouldn’t call him a comedy rapper. I think he got written off as such, and a lot of people either don’t take him seriously as a rapper or they just don’t think he’s funny. I can understand people not thinking he’s funny, because comedy is objective, but Lil Dicky has more going for him than your standard comedy rapper.
Lil Dicky’s place in hip-hop is very interesting to think about in retrospect, especially with conversations about cultural appropriation, but that’s always the issue with white rappers. Because hip-hop is predominately a Black genre, Lil Dicky getting popular for being a white man in a Black-dominated genre is something worth examining (he does talk about this a bit on his show in a few episodes). That’s why it’s so fascinating that he dropped an album recently. Entitled Penith, this marks his first album in almost nine years, but this album makes more sense if you watch Dave. The songs on the album are from the show, a lot of which are full versions of snippets that appeared, and Penith was the name of LD’s fictional album in the show that he’s spent the entirety of the show working on. I first listened to this album without any of that context, so I went into this album with not knowing what to expect, and I gotta be honest — I absolutely love it. Penith is such a fun yet insightful and vulnerable album, and I ended up rewriting this review after watching through a lot of the show. You can listen to this album in two ways — either not having seen the show, and listening to the songs at face value, or watching the show and knowing the context behind these songs. If you go into it without knowing anything about the show, and you’re already an LD fan, you’ll enjoy it, because it features a lot of what he’s known for, which are cheesy, corny, and mostly funny punchlines, as well as his relatively smooth, solid, and easygoing flow, but it has some vulnerability and self-reflection that I didn’t hear on Professional Rapper. That’s what makes this album better, frankly, because instead of Lil Dicky trying to rely on a character on Professional Rapper, he wants people to know who Dave Burd is.
The album admittedly works better in context with the show, because the emotional songs fit into the narrative of the show. A good example is the breakup song “Ally’s Song,” which can be taken as a breakup song in which LD misses his girlfriend, and putting music ahead of her, but if you haven’t watched the show, you wouldn’t know who Ally is. Even some of the more humorous and fun songs, such as “My D!ck Sucks,” make more sense in context with the show. That song is what the Lil Dicky in Dave puts out and goes viral, making him famous online, but it’s a fun and catchy little song about how his dick (which is admittedly more of what Lil Dicky already has been doing). There are some songs that appeared on the show that stand on their own, such as “Harrison Ave,” which is about LD falling in love for the first time as a teenager and the ups and downs that come with young love. “Mr. McAdams” is a song that you can listen to on its own, because it’s about LD’s celebrity crush on Rachel McAdams, but it’s from an episode of the show, where he gets to meet her. There are plenty more, but a lot of this album can he listened to without watching the show, whether it’s the more fun and energetic songs, or the vulnerable and emotional songs, and some of those are among the best cuts of the album. “Honestly,” “Still Freestylin’,” “I Love Myself,” “Going Gray,” and a handful more, are songs that showcase a more mature and emotional side of Lil Dicky that fans may have never seen, as his music was always more fun and silly, but those types of songs are here, too, such as “HAHAHA,” “Kareem Abdul-Jabar,” “I’m Drunk,” “No Fruits Or Vegetables,” and a bunch more.
At the end of the day, your enjoyment of this album depends on how much you enjoy Lil Dicky, and if you’re not a fan, I don’t think you’ll like it. This album admittedly relies on his usual shtick, including dick jokes, sex jokes, and all that stuff, but when the album gets insightful, it gets more interesting. You can definitely tell that he has grown as a person, and sort of as a musician, because he sounds better, and the production is pretty solid throughout this album. There aren’t quite any misfires, or any songs I don’t like, but there are some songs I like more than others. Nonetheless, Penith is an album I love, and I’d say that this is my current favorite album of the year. That’s wild, because Lil Dicky coming out with a new album in 2024 and it being really good was not on my bingo card for this year. We’ll see how the album holds up throughout the year, but I’m excited, because this album is really good, and so is Dave. Watch that show if you haven’t yet, it’s real good. The album works better if you’ve seen the show, but you can still listen to it without any context and it’ll hold up just fine.

Kion's Journey-Chapter 4
A sci-fi action story, read previous chapter on AO3.
A sudden bump awoke Kion with a sudden jolt. The first thing Kion noticed was the throbbing pain in his head and his bare, but bandaged upper body. Looking beside himself, he saw Red, looking less imperious without her oversized jacket and hat. Kion prodded Red awake, trying to not alert whoever was driving.
“Red.. did we?” Whispered Kion and pointed at himself and Red.
“That depends. Are you into rope?” Reds bounded hands peeked up from the blanket.
Panicked, Kion glanced under the blanket, and found that the mysterious driver had not pilfered his pants. To make sure nothing was missing, Kion looked inside his shoe to check for his 1000 current. Score! Now Kion knew that the driver didn’t want money.
“Dat morphhead, may 'ave hidden me cutlass, but dis military be filled wit' Devil pattern weapons!” whispered Red
With a sudden thud, the wagon stoped. And from the driver seat came a raven haired and red skinned figure. Despite being the shortest of the three, her aura was the most dominant, with her long sharp arm-blades which extended from her elbow.
“You two won’t need weapons”
Red sprang up, but found that her feet were also bound together, so her attempt at intimation ended with her falling over.
Kion squared up, though the bounty hunters still calm.
“I’m not looking to fight. My plan will be easy and benefit us all”
Kion soften, even Red seemed intrigued by her proposal. The bounty hunter explained that an illegal gun market was taking place nearby, and that with Reds notoriety, they would be granted entrance. After which the bounty hunter wouldn’t need anything else from them.
“A wee hole in yer plan, matey. The crims runnin' the market won’t let a bounty hunter in”
“ Already solved, I’ll pose as your personal nurse, we can disband after we’ve entered.”
“Ye do remind me o' one o' me pirates. On another note, whats yer name?”
“You don’t need to know, so I won’t tell you”
the bounty hunter went back to driving, though was surprised when she found Kion riding shotgun.
“So about my shirt.. it was an out of print band shirt. You wouldn’t mind me telling me where you’ve kept it.”
“I threw it out”
“WHAT!”
“It was shredded to hell.”
Kions demeanour changed, becoming more relaxed. With a smooth confident motion Kion flexed his arm behind his head and strutted out his chest.
“No big deal, I look better without a shirt.”
“Keeping my eyes on the road”
Red snaked her way between the seats.
“Mind tellin' us why a bounty hunter would risk her licence goin' t' an illegal market?”
“Again, You don’t need to know, so I ain’t telling you”
The illegal market was situated in a valley, nestled between great dunes. Some sellers in the open, others in their own cars, most were in tents. Red was let go of her restraints, and walked out to get access from some guards at the entrance. With sudden force the bounty hunter pushed Kion into a corner.
“Listen good and listen well. Buy a vehicle and drive back to Yūtolis, you can still brush this away as a few bad days.”
“You listen!… Wait how do you know I have any current on me?” Kion now doubted if he had stashed 100 current in his shoe.
“Doesn’t matter, all I’m saying is that you need to get away from your captain.”
“What do you care?”
The bounty hunters face looked somehow a tinge redder now.
“Because you.. You don’t need to know”
Red poked her head inside.
“Mateys, we’ve been granted access. Though we’ll 'ave t' leave the wagon outside.”
Inside, the bazar was filled with criminals off every stripe, all side eyeing each other with suspicion. To the naked eye, it looked like a normal street market, but a closer look revealed armed guards and illegal contraband. The three stood out, with the bounty hunters nurse outfit and Reds puffy shirt. Grills filled the air with the smell of barbecued meat. The group moved with decreasing speed though the bustling crowd, which was composed of a wide variety of races, some even Kion couldn’t recognise. Strange people with chromatic skin, elongated noses and long limbs. when they arrived at a table, Kion and Red had lost the bounty hunter.
“Red did you see were the boun-I mean nurse went”
“No clue, but look at this kick-ass new plasmator, I just bought.”
Kion couldn’t share Reds excitement, he still had a nagging curiosity about why the bounty hunter wanted to be here.
“Y’know, Kion. I could cover for buying a new arm blade for you, if you stuck around me a bit longer”
Kion thought back to yesterday, too when he witnessed the his bloody hands and the viscera hanging onto his blade.
“I don’t think, I should use a blade”
Something patted Kions hip, he looked down, and saw a holstered pistol.
“Something else to keep you safe.”
Kion secured the holster to his pocket, which poked against the data stick. Thereafter Kion pulled out the data stick with the schematics, twirling it between his fingers, how did something so little cause so much trouble. Red looked surprised.
“Why haven’t you crushed that”
“I know it was par of your plan, but we need to hand this over to the authorities, its proof that theres a conspiracy afoot”
“All it will prove is that my country was involved in reconstruction of that weapon. Which will just hasten another war”
“Never heard of a pirate caring about politics or kowtowing to some conspiracy”
Red features rose in anger, preparing for a brutal retort, but something crossed her mind that settled her down.
“Typical truth seeker”
Musicians played exciting tunes on their instruments, making one almost forget the illegal nature of the bazar. But Something strange caught Kions attention, the bounty hunter was walking past them, now wearing a robe and headscarf.
“already done with your errand?” Asked Kion, but the bounty hunter didn’t even meet his gaze. Kion patted her on the shoulder, and was met by an arm blade pointed at throat.
“Back off, stranger!” The bounty hunter said, before retracting her blade and walking away.
“Red, you mentioned you had a pirate who looked like our bounty hunter, was that her?”
“No, if 'twas her, ye’ve be headless.”
“wait here, I gotta get to the bottom of this.”
Kion set out, but not before Red grabbed his arm.
“Ye do know, we won’t meet again”
“Is this the last time, Red?”
“It doesn’t 'ave t' be, go wit' me 'n regroup wit' the others.. wit' Vahe.” Red looked like she already knew the answer and felt the rejection. Kion had the courage to stand against trained soldiers, gun wielding maniac, winged psychopaths. But he couldn’t make himself say goodbye. Reds hand slipped from Kions arm, as he walked away. Thereafter Kion want to look back, but his will broke, and looked behind him, only to see that Red was already gone from the table. Kion had experience with sneaking from his childhood. Following behind the bounty hunter lookalike wasn’t hard, her attention seemed on navigating the bazaar. Though the bounty hunter twin led him to something more important then he’d managed, none other then the crooked man! The crooked man was guarded by a black clad gunmen, wearing pilfered military armour. A effeminate merchant exited his tent, only to let the crooked man and his guard in, as esteemed guests. Kion had to duck behind a crate as the twin turned around, had she spotted him? Kions heart hammered inside his chest, as he heard footsteps approach, stopping right at his hiding spot.
“Why are you shadowing me!? Faker!”
The twin grabbed ahold of Bounty Hunters collar, her arm-blades unsheathed.
“Hey, hey.. Be quieter, it would be bad if anybody found out were here. She pulled out a pendant which she opened, the picture inside calmed the twin. The Picture was of a young, rugged man smiling, it seems to be teared from some larger photo.
“How is this even possible..”
“Doesn’t matter.. Just go back to the mission like you never saw me, I know you.. we can do it”
“Of course, we always trust in ourselves”
With that the twin went towards the tent, what followed was the sound of screaming and fighting. What piqued Kions curiosity, was when a strange reverberating sound came from the tent, a blue light seemed to flash inside, and the sound of conflict dissipated. The bounty hunter rushed forward, with Kion following.
“What are you still doing here!?”
“What happened in that tent?!”
Not slowing down, the bounty hunter ripped into the tent, shocking the already shocked people inside. Looking inside Kion was met by a chaotic sight, three stools and a table were scattered around, spilled tea stained into the carpet. The effeminate dealer held a strange cube with a blue glow, pointing it at the bounty hunter who trained her arm blade against the gun-mans throat. Acting quick, Kion shot the cube with his pistol. With a luminance blue flash, the cube flew apart, the merchant collapsing on the ground. A large gash opened the crooked man’s pant leg, making him wince in pain as he tried to crawl away. Kion was the only one who could see what the crooked man was cradling, a copy of General Zyres memoir with a familiar signature. But there was something more pressing to take care off.
“Theres no need to point that blade at him, hes wounded and unarmed”
“Don’t shove your nose, where it don’t belong.”
“I wouldn’t be here, if I lessoned to that, beside hes subdued, theres no need for murder.”
A vein made itself apparent on the bounty hunters forehead.
“You don’t know, what this bastard has done!”
Her blade teetered closer to his throat, her head snapped towards him, her yellow eyes staring into his soul. The gun-mans armour had been slashed open and stained with his ichor.
“Do you remember Cadba?!” She shouted, her blade now pressed up against him, it would only take a sleight motion. Kion knew that intervention, would only hasten the gun-mans death. Each word, made sweat drops roll down his face .
“Ar.. Are the others?!”
“Most of them, they didn’t talk. All I need is your former lieutenants name, you know the one. They changed and redacted his name, but you, his former underling must remember it”
Cadba? His name? Kion felt like he has just fallen into a new mystery.
“Okay, you psycho. Before they betrayed him, it wa-“
“Hey, what do you mean they? If I have to witness a interrogation, then want it at least to be coherent”
The bounty hunter turned her head, her annoyance breaking through in her voice.
“the government of Belleru, cyberhole.”
Kion looked absent minded, his preliminary research on the planet was centred on Yūtolis’ parties and beaches, not geopolitics. The south hunter could read his continued confusion.
“The nation we are standing on, founded by Vahe and his fabled men.”
“Ya, I knew that guy”
“Yeah, you do.”
She turned her attention back to the gunman, “Now, dirtbag, spill his name”
“Insfirvus, his name was Frigles Insfirvus, or as he is known now, Lieutenant General Ztromer”
Kions blood ran cold, that last name, when did it come to this planet? That dreaded name. But before Kion could spiral, came the blaring of sirens. They could hear people shouting and running in a crazed panic. Another shock hit kion when he looked again at the bounty hunter, the gun-mans throat was slit.
“The world is better with him dead.”
“I can’t be sure of that, because you're so tight lipped. He might have helped us against whoever is outside.”
The weak whizzing voice of the crooked man, caught their attention.
“The bazaar has been busted, Zyre’s chosen will make short work of anyone here”
“Drat, They’l find us, before my extraction comes”
Kions mind was buzzing with stress and the bounty hunter looked also shocked, but this wasn’t the Time to lose their head.
“Bounty hunter, if you an I turn over this criminal, the authorities will forgive our presence here and give you a bounty”
“Good quick thinking.  There might be some questioning, though we have to get a convincing story, that leaves out your captain”
As they brewed their story, the crooked man cradled his book. The bounty hunters sharp teeth glisten through her smile, as the soldiers came inside, an expert of hiding her contempt of the military. The military was clad in their red armour, lead by a women who looked more like an undertaker than a military general. Her head was shaved, with a large angry red scar which bloomed from her left eye. Kion and the bounty hunter were quick to unload their story, a convincing tale. Her grey skin and black clothes gave her an ominous edge.
“escaping a crashing pirate ship and infiltrating an illegal weapon market? Sounds like a real action movie. You're a fine bounty hunter, Akata, but I still have to question your boyfriend. It’s just Standard protocol. By the way, I commend you twos work on catching Menreta, his group has been a thorn on our side”
“Oh, we're not an item, you're not the first to make that assumption.” Clarified Kion.
Kion was lead out of the tent, outside he saw many carted off into planes heading towards the jailhouse.
“Looks like con air is overbooked today. On another note, might I have your name?”
“My apologises for not introducing myself, its agent Tod”
Kion was led away from the military forces. “You’ve likely already experienced how tumultuous this country.. This planet, can be. We can help you leave?“
“What do you mean?”
“that it’s for the best you leave the planet, before you get hurt more. You will get some financial help from us, since you bagged Menreta”
“I still have business on this planet”
Her face become more stern. Kion knew this sweetheart deal was too good to be true. A ringing came from Agent Tods earpiece. She turned away, before whispering in her device.
“Kion, I have eyewitnesses saying you aided the criminal Puroji.” Her voice was ice cold, each word punctuated with hard gravity. But the only person who knew about his involvement would be Menreta.. and Akata. Had she really betrayed him?
“Kion, I can’t let you leave with that.”
“Why do you want it?”
Agent Tod reached inside her breast pocket and pulled out a badge with a lighting symbol emblazoned on it.
“This is an absolute mandate, all in this country respect it, less they incur the full wrath of Belleru. Now give me that”
The drive was squeezed between his fingers. Red had said knowing of flood was a death sentence, so no matter his choice, he wouldn’t get out of here easy.
Agent Tod pressed the yellow buttons which adorned her gauntlet “I’m only doing this to protect my country, I hope you understand that”. Then Kion felt something on his neck, a subtle feeling which gravitated towards his neck. Subtle as a prowling predator. Thereafter He felt it clamp down on his neck, though Kion managed to grab ahold of the garrotte string before it could crush his neck. Though the shock made Kion keel over, he could see that the string was attached to Tods gauntlet. Tod kneeled next to him, “Don’t struggle, rest knowing that your death, will strengthen this nation’s peace.”
The string was now cutting into his fingers, as the force increased. Then Kion felt a respite, the string had been cut, both none the wiser on the culprit. Before they could react, a blade swept down on Tod, cutting her across the face. Now Akata stood between Tod and Kion, her black hair flowing in the desert wind, sharp blades protruding from her elbows.
“Akata, move away aside and I forgive this incident. Stay and be considered a threat to state security.”
Akatas scowl deepen and Tod placed her mandate in her pocket. With sudden fury, Tod swung her arm, the light exposing the garrotte attached to her gauntlet, now swinging in the air. As a result Kion could see the arch of the garrotte falling towards Akata. However Kion pushed Akata out of the way, both landing in the sand. Sand was hurled up in the air, as the garrotte landed, kicking up sand at the impact area. Kion and Akata hid, shrouding themselves in the sandy mist.
“Kion listen. If we both tackle her, one of us should be able to knock her out.”
They charged out of the dust, both coming close to striking the agent. Though Kions fist never connected, instead being deflected by a wire whirled around Tod. The string also shielded Tod from Akata, who lacked the proper momentum to cut it down. Kion and Akata were both taken aback, as the wire unfurled and knocked them back.
“That gauntlet lets her manipulate her wire, thats beyond advanced tech!”
Footsteps of soldiers were approaching, their red helmets peeking from the dunes.
“I got an escape, follow me!”
Kion ran behind Akata through the bazaar. Bullets flew past them, the remaining tents obscuring them. But the amount of tents thinned out, as they were reaching the edge of the bazaar.
“Here take this!” Said Akata and tossed Kion an arm blade, which she had fished from a display rack. However Kion let the weapon slip from his listless hands, making Akata raise a brow.
“Are we heading somewhere?” Shouted Kion over the gunfire.
“Towards my meeting location. My original plan, before the army arrived was to get picked up, by some guys I know. They should be here in a few seconds.”
From out of the horizon, rode cloaked men in their armoured trucks. They're at the meeting place, Kion and Akata were unprotected. Meanwhile the soldiers were closing in, spearheaded by agent Tod. In the nick of time, their rescuers came, manhandling the wheel of their armoured truck to weave a bow towards Akata. A freelancer wearing a heavy trench coat and a respirator mask opened the back seat door, and with one quick motion snatched Akata by scruff of her shirt, and took her inside. Only Akata. Kion was left in the open, as the soldiers trained their guns on him, waiting the firing order from Tod. Therefore Kion jumped on the truck, hanging onto its back.
“Red Guard, FIRE!!” Roared Tod, the soldiers unleashed the full fury of their weaponry. Hearing the order, Kion claimed on top of the truck. The bullets plinked of the trucks backside, a testament to its fortitude. Out of a porthole, the freelancer clambered out.
“I’m a friend of Akata, let me in.” Said Kion
Instead the soldier pulled out a small revolver from her coat.
Meanwhile in the backseat Akata’s hands were digging into her pants, his boots digging into the leather seat. “Don’t shoot him! He’s with me.” Shouted Akata and tried to pull the freelancer down, but instead pantsed her by accident. The soldier lowered her arms to regain modesty and dropped down.
“Good, now to get inside” said Kion
Meanwhile inside, Akata and the soldier were tussling.
“Nobody disrespects a Fangian daughter of Latrusu”
“Its your known fault for going commando” said Akata and kicked her in the guts.
The fight was ended when Kion landed on the freelancer, knocking her out.
“Oh, sorry. Hey driver, thank this gal, when she wakes up.”
The two could now relax.
“So where are we heading?”
“A safe-house, near the border, which I intend to cross..When we drove here, you asked about why I would risk my licence going here. It was because of that soldier. In my youth I lived in Cadba, there I met him” With slow thoughtful movements, Akata pulled out her pendant, and revealed the picture of the man. “He was a deserter, and fled to Cadba for a new life. He was.. my greatest love. But then Ztromer and his men came, they harrowed the city, looking for deserters like him. When they found him and me by a nearby hill-“ A tears began to flow down Akatas cheek. “They were ordered to kill deserters and whoever associated with them.. But Ztromer gave me a choice to die with him or kill him. In the end, he begged me to take his life.”
“How could somebody do that?”
“He wanted survivors to tell stories about what happens when people befriend deserters. The reason I’m telling you this is because you remind me of myself.”
“Really? How come?”
“When I first found you and the captain, I noticed your bloody clothes and that weapon you threw away. It still creeps you out doesn’t it? That you were capable of doing that. I know how that can stay with someone, make them believe that their weapon is sinful, but its not!”
“What do you mean, I killed those two, that arm blade would have made me a psycho killer”
“I thought the same, For a long time I hated my blades, believed they damned me. but they are what make me strong. Kion, it's only the strong that can choose merciful in a life or death situation. So please, don’t give up your strength”
“Didn’t know you had such a big heart.”
“Saving you, was like saving myself, nothing selfless about it.”
Then the truck came to a sudden stop.
“Thats strange, there should still be a long ways to the safe-house.”
Before they could resist, they were dragged out of the truck by two large freelancers and forced on their knees. Kions eyes darted around the desolate sandy landscape, until focusing on three figures approaching. It was two bulky armed freelancers, they looked similar with their heavy trench coats, sand caked boots, and respirator masks. The freelancer in the middle, who was shorter than the rest, stepped forward.
“Akata we had a deal, we would extract you from the market and you would steal the time cube for us. Care to explain, why you lack the cube?”
“Things got complicated, got hit by the damn thing, sent back in time, had to return back to the market and set up a time loop. I still paid for access to your safe house, so just-”
“I remembered you never mentioned that the military could be there, that my men could get killed and that you would bring your little boyfriend with you.”
Kion seemed to recognise his voice.
“Hey, would an absolute mandate be the same worth as that cube?”
Those words cached the interest off the speaker, and he approached closer.
“Guards, allow Kion to stand up”
Kion dusted his knees off, as hanged over the freelancers leader.
“How do you know.. its really you” Then Kion lunged forward, the freelancers readied their weapons, only for their leader to signal them back down. A quick jab went across the leaders face, knocking his mask off, exposing his grey rounded face.
“Were finally even.” He said.
“Kivas. I thought I would never see you again.”
“Reunions can wait, until the deal is done.”
Kion gave Kivas, the absolute mandate, the deal between him and Akata was settled.
“Does anybody know you stole this?”
“Kinda, I fought some chick and pick pocked it from her.”
Akata was perplexed.
“Kion, stealing a mandate is a death sentence.”
“I’ve already been given one, they can’t kill me twice.”
