I get y'all are passionate about our little brick friends and all,because I am too.

Ninjago’s been really important to me ever since I found the pilots on accident. My dad had died a few months prior,and ten-year-old me was suddenly expected to be an adult. I was catapulted into a terrifying world filled with screaming and violence and virtually no freedoms at my mom’s hands because she was unhappy.

Ninjago was a new world for me,too,but it wasn’t unpleasant. Nothing was expected of me. The Ninja wouldn’t be the type to hit me if I messed up,because I was a kid,just like they were. I saw a bit of myself in them,I guess; they had been catapulted into a new world just as I had.

And it stayed with me through a lot. When I came home from school on Wednesdays,crying because of the other other kids and crying because I knew I was going to get yelled at for crying,I’d perk up for a minute and remember,“Hey, Ninjago’s coming on tonight!”

And for that half hour,I felt like what I was- a kid.

Later as the abuse picked up,I’d hide in my room with the door locked and watch Ninjago. I wasn’t allowed to talk,so I’d sit there in silence with a big grin on my face as I retreated into my safe place. I watched the season two finale at a foster home after my twelfth birthday,and I didn’t even care that the other kids were snickering at me. Fanfiction came later,which was an extension of the universe I’d come to love.

Tl;Dr: This show has helped me get through some of the darkest days of my life,not because it’s content is anything especially profound,but simply because of the world it created and the fact that,in a way,I was a part of something wonderful.

I’m older now,almost seventeen,and being on Tumblr for the past month or so has been a mostly pleasant experience. There’s only been one thing that’s been biting at me:

Some of the fandom is awful.

To be honest,the amount of discourse over little things feels disrespectful to the show. People are attacked for having different headcanons, whether they be over race or sexuality (10-15 year old me probably would’ve gotten SLAUGHTERED for thinking that the ninja were all white and heterosexual,even though I really hadn’t been exposed to many POC or LGBT+ people.. despite being pan myself.) I never would’ve pictured any of the ninja being gay or trans or bi or autistic or mixed-race,and there probably would be a bunch of people calling me racist or homophobic or ablist.

And as for ships.. good gravy. I’ve never seen a fandom more vicious when it comes to ships,except maybe Undertale.

To get to the original point of what this post was about,I just have a question:

Why? Why are some of you so bitter and angry? Ninjago’s about teamwork and getting along and just about being decent,and if the ninja were real,they certainly wouldn’t want everyone to metaphorically rip each others’ throats out over opinions. It doesn’t matter what you ship or who you think the ninja would kiss or what they look like,no one should be forced to feel ashamed of how they interpret anything(unless it’s super problematic/toxic), especially over brick people that are essentially blank slates. If you do love Ninjago and our Lego Ninja,you wouldn’t care about how someone else sees them. You’d just be happy that they do see them.
