Critical Practice - A Significant Thing
A Significant Thing – Trip 35
Tumblr media
The Olympus Trip 35 is a compact 35mm film camera that was based on the older Olympus Pen EES half frame camera.
The name of this camera is an obvious nod to its intended market, people traveling and families who wanted a simple and affordable way to capture memories on holiday.
It was “affordable” because it retailed for just $59.95 at launch or $530 adjusted for inflation which is roughly in line with an entry level DSLR or mirrorless camera today.
It was manufactured from 1967 to 1984 with over ten million units sold during that time, it came fitted with a built in non-detachable 40mm Zuiko lens that had a constant ƒ/2.8 aperture.
The shooting style of the camera was either an automatic exposure system that had 2 shutter speeds, either 1/40s or 1/200s that would be chosen automatically based on lighting conditions and the iso setting chosen from 25 to 400 or a “manual” mode in which the aperture was set by the user with a constant set shutter speed of 1/40s.
The lens used a zone focusing system with 4 options and was fitted with a solar powered selenium light meter which negated the need for batteries for the camera to operate.
The camera overall is simple in its function which allowed it to be easily accessible to the masses and contributed to its lengthy production run and its good reputation throughout.
The design of this camera is well thought out, it is small and compact and was made from strong metal for the chassis and stiff plastic for the film door with a leatherette grip which is both stylish and functional.
The lens consisted of sharp glass elements (four elements in three groups).
The function dials are all on the lens housing which keeps the camera body from feeling cluttered and messy leaving just the rewind crank, shutter button, the hot shoe and a small shot counter up top.
There is a simple rangefinder style view finder on the back of the camera body that works well for its size, it has clear frame lines with parallax marking to help compose your image and it also has a smaller “judas window” view in the bottom right corner which gives you a view of your chosen aperture and focus zone on the lens housing.
When using the automatic mode, the viewfinder has a small red flag that pops up when an image will be under exposed, this also locks the shutter.
My personal Trip 35 belonged to my great grandfather who used it as the family camera to capture memories as my mum and her siblings were growing up, my gran says that he used to develop the film himself up in their loft and he always had it with him and I think that is evident with the sings of use left behind on my camera such as a dent in the filter threads on the lens. The small amount of damage to the camera considering its age is also a testament to the quality of materials used back then as well as how much care my great grandad put into keeping the camera in good shape, he kept it in a leather shell case the whole time which took the brunt of the wear. He even left the original QC sticker from the factory on the body.
I like knowing that this camera specifically was used by him as it tells me that one of the camaras I use to capture moments in time was used to capture some of my mum as she was growing up as well.
It was once my great granddads prized possession and now it’s one of mine.
This is one camera I’ll keep forever, it's significant to me and to photography.

Artisan - Research & Evaluation
If I’m honest, the Artisan brief didn’t initially fire my imagination – videography per se wasn’t really a subject that I had any interest in, however that said, I am most certainly interested in photographs that have a cinematic quality, and in films that appear to have been shot with a photographer’s eye.  (I mentioned this before in my previous blog for NEW (photographer) – how much I admired and enjoyed Cuaron’s award-winning “Roma”).   Also, although I wasn’t sure what I wanted to shoot, the theme of “Artisan”, I thought was an inspired choice for the curriculum.
I thought the selected “instruction” videos that were available on the course website on how to shoot video on a DSLR camera were excellent – even the very first “basic” video produced by Fenchel & Jansch was extremely informative.
Tumblr media
From the above video (I watched it a few times!) I learned about optimisation of camera settings for shooting over the 6 steps detailed in the video, e.g. for normal/daylight conditions,
·        a frame rate of 24/25 fps (frames per second –as used in feature film productions)
·        a shutter speed of 1/50 (for a frame rate of 24/25 fps – these both to be doubled in the case of, for example, shooting a scene that might ultimately be shown in slow-motion)
·        an ISO of 100 (to have maximum quality image of minimum digital noise)
·        aperture as wide open as possible to have a shallow depth of field – this means the focus and focus of attention will be on the intended subject in the frame, all under the control of the photographer
·        all camera controls to be in MANUAL mode – especially focus (see above bullet point)
·        picture settings to be adjusted with sharpness and contrast set to minimum (or near minimum) to achieve a “flat” cinematic look, also saturation reduced slightly
·        white balance setting to be determined by the ambient light conditions and quality
·        a tripod should be used to achieve a smooth final video production
The above represent ideal conditions, and there were hints and tips in the video such as using an ND filter if the lighting conditions were too bright, and for shooting under low light conditions.
The above information was sufficient to get going with a few in-class trials, which were really useful in that these sessions allowed us the students to familiarise ourselves with the camera settings and “see” how successful or otherwise our rapidly story-boarded/put-together mini-blockbusters turned out.  Actually these trials were probably more essential than useful – some idea of how to actually shoot a video was surely advisable before letting us loose on even the most patient of unsuspecting artisans out there in the general public.
The next thing was to select which type of artisan I would be able to actually shoot a video of.  I’d seen dramatic videos of a blacksmith at work, with red-hot metal and sparks flying as a horseshoe was hammered into shape over an anvil, but I wondered if that might not now be a bit overdone, and possibly a little bit clichéd. Probably a less-clichéd option – and possibly more accessible/amenable would be a cobbler at work. There is one on Calder Street in Govanhill that I have used regularly – however I found he’d shut up shop when I investigated further. A chat with my lecturer helped immensely; he asked me what sort of stuff I liked doing in my spare time – apart from photography – and when I said playing (or trying to play) acoustic guitar, he suggested my artisan could be a luthier. And that was that really – my guitar tutor who had a connection with The Guitar Workshop Ltd in Glasgow put in a good word for me and I was good to go.  I really have no answer as to why I didn’t think of a luthier as my Artisan shoot before it was suggested to me – it immediately seemed an obvious option, as I am very interested in their craft, but I just didn’t see it in advance at the time.
As was suggested, I carried out a reconnaissance visit to meet the luthier and the premises, noting the layout and the lighting conditions. The shop has a big shopfront window which lets a lot of daylight in, and I was worried in case I might need an ND filter to control the light while maintaining optimum camera settings. I was relieved to see that a roller-blind could be lowered if necessary.  The shop featured a LOT of overhead LED panels and anglepoise desk lamps, but these were easily switch controllable.   I became aware that I wanted to vary the light intensity and introduce a softly-lit aspect to at least part of the video rather than continuously use the quite harsh light that I’d encountered in my preliminary visit. ( I understood that of course bright light conditions might be necessary under normal working conditions to prevent eye fatigue and to allow the luthier to see and work with intricate detailing).  The layout of the shop meant that I maybe had 3 possible strong angles from where I could set up my video tripod. However space was limited, plus there was a second luthier working in the workshop on the days I was able to shoot.
From the College stores I booked 4 days in advance the following equipment:
·        Video tripod
·        Canon 6D camera with
·        50mm and 100mm prime lenses.
·        LED Lighting kit (comprising 2 off fully- controllable lamps) plus coloured gels (red + orange)
The video was shot over two visits spaced 2 weeks apart. I shot a lot of footage the first visit which I reviewed and carried out some preliminary edits on, again following the advice of an instruction video also shown in class. A fellow classmate Adam Boyd also suggested some really useful hints and tips on how to use the video editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro). I had captured some excellent sound bites of instruments being tuned and played as well as (I thought) some nice shoulder-level focus shift video shots between the two luthiers working at different work benches.  I worked out that I needed some extra shots of other instruments (apart from guitars, that is – it makes sense in the video) and extra voiceover comments from Ian Dickinson, the luthier, and I got those in my second visit.  Some of the additional shots I needed had to be
There was a lot of juxtapositioning of the video sequences and the accompanying soundtrack using the Adobe Premiere Pro software, and for the soundtrack I also adjusted the sound levels at certain sections – when the luthier was about to speak, and to increase the volume of speech in one instance - using the pen tool which made me feel quite proficient in video editing – well I feel I certainly ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would, anyway!
I was actually quite pleased with the final video. I think my best shot was the focus-shift going from the nearer luthier to the one working at the further workbench.  I liked how I edited my voiceovers to fit with the video sequence at each stage and the music itself which was from instruments played in the workshop. And I really liked my final sequence, courtesy of Barney, who plucked the notes of Bach’s Prelude for Cello Suite No. 1 (you’ll know it when you hear it!) on a cello that he literally had just put back together.
I did promise a copy to the luthier, Ian, so hopefully he’ll like it well enough also.   (If he doesn’t, I’ll maybe feel obliged to buy a bespoke handmade guitar from him. I really wouldn’t mind that at all, but as it’s quite expensive item, and I’m not really that brilliant a guitarist, I think my wife might insist on a divorce first! So maybe I’ll just practice a bit more on one of the three guitars I already have!)

The easiest way to start creating home automation and making a smart home is probably by getting some smart light bulbs. Being able to turn on or off a light using an app or your voice is pretty darn cool. And, if you can change the intensity or the color of the light, it adds to the ambiance of the room. Smart light bulbs, like the Nooie Aurora, can make that process of making a dumb lamp smart and bring a room to life incredibly easy. And, while some colored LED smart bulbs require a hub to function, the Nooie Smart LED bulbs are standalone – all you need is WiFi. (*Disclosure below.) My smart home’s IQ seems to be regularly increasing. I have numerous hubs from different vendors, smart switches and lights, smart locks and security cameras, smart speakers and displays. As my home gets smarter, it does become more complex—understanding which smart devices integrate with what ecosystem can sometimes be a bit daunting. Luckily, there seems to be increasing cross-compatibility among devices and systems. But, a quick recommendation – try to stay away from proprietary devices that have limited or no integration with some of the larger smart home ecosystems like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, and Apple HomeKit. Otherwise, you may have to stick proprietary hubs into hidden corners around your home and hope and pray that they integrate with the ones above. The Nooie Aurora is Smart on its Own The Nooie Aurora Smart LED bulbs are compatible with a couple of the large smart home ecosystems, specifically Amazon Alexa and Google Home. But you don’t even need one of those hubs and ecosystems. Each smart LED bulb is self-contained – just bring your own WiFi (2.4GHz only), and you can set up automation and control the bulbs manually. For me, this is an important feature. Perhaps you don’t want to give people access to your entire smart home ecosystem, or you want to give your kids access to smart lighting just in their room. Or you want to set up a photography or video filming environment with easily controllable lighting. The Nooie Smart LED bulbs let you do all of this easily. The Nooie Aurora has some great features: Bright (800 lumens) yet dimmableWarm-to-cool white color balance (2800K-6000K)16 million colorsLow energy consumption20-year lifeEasy setup2.4GHz WiFi compatibleApp-controlledSmart Assistant-enabledSleek designBudget-minded Having all of the features in a self-contained, single LED bulb is fantastic and opens up various smart lighting environments throughout your home or office. Setting Up the Nooie LED bulbs I received a 4-pack of the Nooie Aurora Smart LED bulbs to review. Since I have pretty much packed every corner of my house with smart switches and smart lighting, I was faced with a bit of a challenge. I really didn’t have anywhere to put the Nooie smart bulbs. And this bothered me because I honestly love smart lighting and being able to command things via spoken voice, via an app, or from a time schedule. But an opportunity presented itself. My oldest daughter had recently moved out of our house, and suddenly her bedroom was available for me to take over as an office. It had been many, many years since I had had dedicated space just to me and my work. Long story short, my wife helped me set up a style and color palette (it couldn’t completely become just a dark man cave). I had overhead lighting that was already controlled via a smart switch. But I wanted some ambient lights that were more subtle. This is where the Nooie Aurora’s came into play. I decided I would use three of the four I received in the corners of my office to provide that ambient lighting and I would give the fourth Nooie to my daughters for their room – and that they would control via the Nooie app on their own. I did pick up four of these spotlight/wall mount accent lamps for about $20 each on Amazon, which I highly recommend because of their price and style (and the fact that they work great with the Nooie LED smart bulbs). They almost look like something from an old Hollywood set. I screwed in the Nooie’s into these spotlight lamps and turned on the bulb. You set up one bulb at a time, and you need to be sure you are within the 2.4GHz WiFi range. Simply use the Nooie app to configure (and later control) the lights. If you don’t already have a Nooie account, be sure to set one up and set up your Home. Then click Add to add your device, in this case, the Nooie LED smart bulb. Choose the “Nooie Smart Light Bulb” option. Next, power on the Nooie bulb – on the spotlight lamps I recommended above, there is a simple on/off switch on the cord. When you turn on the Nooie for the first time, it should flash a blue light to indicate it is in pairing mode. If the bulb isn’t flashing, you just need to turn the light on and off 4 times in a row to reset it. I did have to do this a couple of times, and it worked perfectly. Next, you connect the Nooie bulb to your 2.4 GHz WiFi. Select your WiFi and enter the password. It is helpful to have your smartphone in the same area where the Nooie Smart LED bulb will be set up. The pair typically takes less than a minute. After you have paired the bulb, you can name it, put it in a control group, control it, and share it with other users in your family who already have a Nooie account set up. The last step is completely optional – that of connecting it to Smart Home assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. You need to either enable the skill on Alexa and/or choose a “works with” from Google. You can then fully control your Nooie bulbs from the smart assistant apps or via your voice. I must say, the setup took literally a few minutes from getting the Nooie bulb configured to having it fully set up within Google Home and Amazon Alexa within lighting groups and rooms. Using the Nooie Smart LED Bulbs I’m not going to go into too much detail about using the bulbs, mainly because this is a very personal setup. What color scheme or lighting approach that I use might not be liked by others. I did, as I mentioned, set up my three Nooie LED bulbs in the spotlight accent lamp holders and placed them around my office. I also configured them to be part of my office lighting group so that I simply need to say “Alexa/Google, turn off office” or “Alexa/Google, turn on office spotlights,” and the Nooie Auroras will turn on or off. You can even use voice commands to change the color of the spotlights. Just to test out the power of Alexa (and because I’m a Star Trek geek), I set up some routines where I could say “active Red Alert,” and the current overhead lights would turn off, the Nooie’s would turn on with red coloring, and the Red Alert sound effect would play from my smart speaker. Then I would say, “cancel Red Alert,” and the red spotlights would turn off, the sound would stop, and the regular overhead lights would turn back on. Super geeky, but my family started to get annoyed with it, so I decided to delete it and focus on ambient and accent lighting only. The Nooie app does have some out-of-the-box color lighting suggestions. They call these “Themes,” and you can also create your own theme if you want. But I personally like and use the “Focused” and “Natural” themes. These are my morning lighting choices because they aren’t too bright. Accent lighting does wonders for any environment. All of the photos in this review are from my office. And my daughters use the Nooie within their bedroom as well. Let Nooie Shine the Way to Lighting your Smart Home Easily With an easy setup, elegant yet simple design, and the ability to be smart without relying on a proprietary or dedicated smart hub, the Nooie Aurora Smart LED bulbs are an easy way to bring home automation to any lamp or light socket with the click of a button on a smartphone app or via voice command. Lastly, the Nooie Smart LED bulbs are quite reasonable (especially if you factor in that you don’t need to get a smart hub to control them). On Amazon, you can get a 1-pack, 2-pack, or the best deal currently, I think, is the 4-pack. See below for prices as of this writing: 1-pack – $9.992-pack – $19.994-pack – $29.99 You can also purchase a 4-pack on the Nooie website currently for $55.99. 300+ TOP FLASH Interview Questions and Answers
FLASH Interview Questions for freshers experienced :-
1. How To Embed Flash In Html? After creating a Flash movie you choose File > Save As from the top menu to save your movie.Save the file as "YourFlahFileName.fla". To embed the Flash movie you just made into an HTML page, you should go back to your Flashprogram and do the following steps: Step 1 Choose File > Open. Open a Flash movie you have created. Step 2 Choose File > Export Movie. Step 3 Name the file "YourFlahFileName.swf". Choose the location where the file is to be stored (in your Web folder). Click OK. Step 4 Open the HTML page where you want to insert your Flash movie. Insert this code: 2. Explain The Flash Vs. Animated Images And Java Applets? Animated images and Java applets are often used to create dynamic effects on Web pages. The advantages of Flash are as under: Adobe Flash loads much faster than animated images Flash allows interactivity, animated images do not Flash does not require programming skills, java applets do 3. Who Can View Flash? In September 2000, NPD Research, the parent company of MediaMetrix, conducted a study to determine what percentage of Web browsers have Flash preinstalled. The results show that 96.4% of Web users can experience Macromedia Flash content without having to download and install a player. If you do not have the Shockwave Player installed you can download flash player for free from Adobe's site. 4. Where To Start The Adobe Flash? After you have installed Flash at your computer, you should go through the flash help that are included in the program. Start Adobe Flash, click Help in the menu and choose Lessons. These lessons will teach you the basics of Flash. 5. I Shoot Underwater With A Ttl Strobe That Doesn't Allow You To Set Flash Exposure Compensation. How Do I Set Fill Flash With This Set Up? Let's assume that you have an N80 body in an underwater case and are using underwater TTL strobes. Here you could set flash exposure compensation from the N80 body (assuming the case let you access that control). I'd tend to set the N80 to Standard TTL if I wanted to fiddle with flash levels, though, as in balanced fill-flash modes you don't know what compensation the camera is already adding (i.e., you'll only get repeatable results with Standard TTL). 6. Is Everyone Required Flash Player Plugin? No because they do not like "blinking things" on their screens, some users choose to disable or not install Flash Player. 7. What Is Flash Tweening? Tweening comes from the words "in between". With Tweening you can go from one keyframe to another and specify changes in the animation and let the Flash program create the frames in between. According to Me, Tweening is an animation in between the objects or frames. 8. Flash .swf Movies Can Be Very Time Consuming To Edit It is very laborious work to change a Flash web page quickly. For this reason, you will almost never see a dynamic content page like a news site utilizing Flash for its rapidly-changing content. Instead, Flash is used more for decorative purposes, and for advertising and online gaming purposes. 9. I Understand From The Sb-25 Manual That The Built-in, Retractable Bounce Card Is Meant For Use With The Flash Head In A Vertical Position. I do (this is true of the SB-24, SB-25, SB-26, SB-28/28DX, SB-80DX). That's because it helps keep a little light from being lost, but more importantly, it provides just a bit of catchlight in the subject's eyes (the bounce directly off the card). 10. Who Can Create Flash Movies? To create your own Flash movies you have to buy a Flash program from Adobe. The latest version from Adobe is Adobe Flash Lite (or Flash CS3 Pro). If you do not have a Flash program, you can download a 30 days free trial version of Flash from Adobe.

FLASH Interview Questions 11. It Seems That Most Recommendations For Using Fill Flash Talk About Using -1.3 To -1.7 Stops Of Flash Compensation. This Seems Like Very Little Flash (compared To The Ambient Exposure). Would Not -.5 Or -1 Stop Be Better? Most nature and scenic professionals use -1.3 to -1.7 stops for their fill flash setting because they are trying to do one thing only: increase shadow detail (an alternate way of saying this: decrease overall scene contrast). Why? Because exposures for slide film need to be biased to the brightest object in the scene (i.e., overexposure of slide film is VERY bad). Since film has a limited dynamic range it can record with reasonable detail, if you set your exposure to put the highlight at the white point, you often lose shadow detail. The purpose of the fill flash, therefore, is to raise the film's response curve at the shadow point without further blowing out the detail. The -1.3 to -1.7 values are often just enough to pull another "stop" of useful shadow detail into an exposure without adding unduly to the highlight exposure. Films like Velvia are especially troublesome 12. Can Flash .swf Movies Be Very Time Consuming To Edit? Yes It is very laborious work to change a Flash web page quickly. For this reason, you will almost never see a dynamic content page like a news site utilizing Flash for its rapidly-changing content. Instead, Flash is used more for decorative purposes, and for advertising and online gaming purposes. Its possible to change quickly when the object is connected to database. In fact its more faster than other OOPS projects. Dynamic content can be done in flash so fast! 13. Some Organizations Block Flash Movies From Being Received Through The Internet. While this is partly motivated by fears of Flash viruses and Flash hackers, the greater motivation is disciplining staff. Many managers of private companies do not want their employees playing Flash games at their office computers, so they will ban Flash movies at work through technical blockerson the network. Do not be surprised if your employer chooses to implement a ban of Flash at your office. 14. Not Everyone Has The Required Flash Player Plugin? While this is partly motivated by fears of Flash viruses and Flash hackers, the greater motivation is disciplining staff. Many managers of private companies do not want their employees playing Flash games at their office computers, so they will ban Flash movies at work through technical blockerson the network. Do not be surprised if your employer chooses to implement a ban of Flash at your office. 15. What Is Vector Graphic Animation? Vector graphics" are different from "raster graphics" like jpg, gif, png, bmp graphics. And vector graphics use math formulas to draw animation shapes, while raster graphics save millions of tiny colored dots to draw photos. 16. Tell The Difference Between Indexed Array And Associative Array? Associative array can have values of any type, whereas indexed arrays contain only numbers. Indexed array contain only one type of data, where associative array can have multiple type of data. Associative array contain values indexed by integers, whereas assosiative arrays contain values indexed by string. Associative array contain value pairs, whereas indexed array contain single values. 17. Can Some Organizations Block Flash Movies From Being Received Through The Internet? While this is partly motivated by fears of Flash viruses and Flash hackers, the greater motivation is disciplining staff. Many managers of private companies do not want their employees playing Flash games at their office computers, so they will ban Flash movies at work through technical blockerson the network. Do not be surprised if your employer chooses to implement a ban of Flash at your office. 18. I Shoot Underwater With A Ttl Strobe That Does Not Allow You To Set Flash Exposure Compensation. 19. If We Set Slow Sync As You Suggest In Answers On The Many Online Forums You Visit, Would Not We Be Opening Ourselves Up To Blurred Shots When The Shutter Speed Gets Significantly Below 1/60? Yes and no. When you shoot with flash, there are two exposures going on: the flash exposure on the subject and the background exposure. If flash is the main source of light, a stationary subject lit by it should always be sharp, as the slowest Nikon flash duration is about 1/830 of a second. The background, however, very well may go soft or get blurred by poor handholding technique or subject movement. Many photographers have learned to use this to their advantage--there's one style of flash that uses very long shutter speeds and panning/zooming/tilting to purposefully blur the background yet still use the flash to "freeze" the subject. 20. You Understand From The Sb-25 Manual That The Built-in, Retractable Bounce Card Is Meant For Use With The Flash Head In A Vertical Position? I do (this is true of the SB-24, SB-25, SB-26, SB-28/28DX, SB-80DX). That's because it helps keep a little light from being lost, but more importantly, it provides just a bit of catch light in the subject's eyes (the bounce directly off the card). 21. The F601/n6006 Had A Special Control To Set The Fill-flash Option On The Body; Is There A Similar Way To Set Fill Levels On The F90x/n90s And Sb-28 Combo? If you're using an SB-24 or later and a modern Nikon body that doesn't have a built-in flash, you set fill levels on the flash. With your combo, you can set fill by pressing the Minus button on the SB-28 three to five times (-1.0 to -1.7 stops). However, there's a caveat. If you have the camera set to Program (P) exposure mode and the flash to TTL, you're in what is known as a "balanced" mode. In balanced modes, the camera tries to equalize the flash and ambient light levels. But, when everything is on automatic, the camera can only set shutter speeds of 1/60 to 1/250, which might not let the camera set the proper ambient exposure. In dim light, for example, the camera would underexpose the background (though the subject would be lit by the flash). Thus, if you dial in fill flash in this situation, both the ambient light and the flash would be underexposed, ruining your shot. So, the caveat is this: don't set fill flash levels on your SB-28 unless you know that the ambient exposure is going to be correct. For dim light, that may mean you need to set Slow or Rear flash sync; in bright light, that may mean you need to set High Speed (FP) flash sync. 22. How to Play a movie clip? The following is the process to play a movie clip: Right click on MCTRio symbol in the Library panel and select Linkage from context menu. Select Export for ActionScript from Linkage Properties dialog box. Verify MCTrio appears as linkage name in the Identifier text box. Select Export in First Frame and click on OK. The exported movie clips with Action Script are loaded before the first frame of the SWF file is loaded. Specify the movie loads on the first frame for avoiding playback delays. The Voigtlander Bessamatic belongs to that family of 35mm SLR cameras which have a leaf shutter fitted between the lens and the mirror rather than a focal plane shutter fitted between the mirror and the film. This puts it in the same class as the Topcon Unirex, Kodak Retina Reflex and Kowa SE to name just three I’ve reviewed on this blog.

My Bessamatic Camera
I picked up this camera along with a Topcon RE Auto in an eBay sale.
To be honest, I don’t think the seller knew exactly what he was selling because a working example of the Bessamatic would normally sell for more than that price by itself. Another clue was that he described it as a Yoighander camera.
Anyway, it seemed too good a deal to miss, so I purchased it in a ‘Buy in now’ sale for £25 including postage.
Once I’d paid for the Bessamatic I found it took a very long time for the camera to arrive with me. So long in fact, that I messaged the seller to see if he had dispatched it and even though he assured me he had, I noticed when it eventually arrived that the actual postage date on the parcel was a couple of days after my message to him. I consoled myself with the knowledge that when he eventually posted it it cost him nearly £17 to send it to me first class rather than the £5 I paid for postage.
Other than waiting a long time for it the camera which arrived seems to be in very good condition. All the shutter speeds seem about right and although the aperture blades were a bit reluctant to open and close when I first received it, after a few hours use they settled down and seem fine now.
Voigtlander Bessamatic Description
As I described earlier the Bessamatic is a camera with the shutter mounted between the lens and the mirror which makes it a rather complex beast to engineer. If you think about the shutter layout in an SLR it’s obvious that when the photographer wants to compose the image the shutter needs to be open, but the film has to be protected from the light entering the lens.
So the set of actions which have to happen in this style SLR design are:
As the film is advanced the shutter is opened
at the same time the aperture in the lens is fully opened
also a plate is raised or lowered across the film to stop the light entering
the mirror is dropped down to deflect the image into the eyepiece.
Once the image is composed and focused, as the shutter release is pressed the camera then has to
close the shutter
lower or raise the plate across the film
raise the mirror out of the light path
stop the aperture down to the correct setting for the exposure the photographer has selected
open and close the shutter for the correct amount of time
You can see why this style camera is more complex than the normal focal plane shutter arrangement!
Camera Details.
The most noticeable thing I found when I first picked the camera up and tried the shutter a few times was the feel and sound of quality engineering. This camera sounds wonderful when the shutter is cocked and fired – just like precision engineering should sound.
It is quite a bulky, heavy camera however. Quite a lot heavier to carry around than a contemporary camera of more traditional design.
Loading with film
The Bessamatic is loaded with a standard 35mm film cartridge which is fitted into the film chamber and threaded across in front of the exposure frame and onto the take up reel which the film advance lever turns. All that is pretty standard stuff, but the slightly out of the ordinary setting is the frame counter.
On more modern film cameras the frame counter would automatically reset to 0 when the back of the camera was opened. On the Voigtlander Bessamatic it needs to be manually set the the correct setting using a thumb wheel built into the frame advance pillar. To make this work there is a small lever on the top of the camera next to the shutter release which is set to the ‘R’ position (this lever is also used to rewind the film), and then the thumb wheel turned until the frame advance is set to the same as the number of exposures of the film being loaded.
Once the frame counter is set, the film loaded and the back closed, each throw of the film advance decrements the frame counter by one frame.
Exposure
The camera is equipped with a through-the-lens exposure meter which is pretty easy to use and oddly for a vintage camera still seems to be working accurately in my example.
Film speed, light meter and filter compensation
To set the exposure the film speed must have first been set using the small lever on the exposure setting dial.
With the film rewind lever pulled up, the small lever is pulled to the outside of the dial and then the whole inner section of the dial can be moved to align the correct film speed with the little red marker on the side of the dial. Both DIN and ASA settings are shown to do this.
With the film speed set and the photographer ready to take a picture the exposure is set like this:
First the shutter speed is selected by turning the black shutter adjustment fins on the back of the lens mount. It may be that the light meter dial also needs to be moved to select the required shutter speed if the camera is at one extreme of the light meter range.
Once the shutter speed is set the photographer looks through the viewfinder and composes the image. If the film hasn’t been advanced the viewfinder will be black so at this is the time to wind the film on if that’s the case.
Once the film is advanced there is a needle and a line and circle visible in the viewfinder and the light meter dial is turned until the two align. Once aligned the camera is set for the correct exposure and the picture can be taken. Alternatively, at this point the photographer can adjust the combination of shutter speed and aperture to get different artistic effects like blurring the background or freezing action just by readjusting the black shutter speed fins. As long as the camera doesn’t meet the end of the exposure range the correct exposure will remain set.
Voigtlander Bessamatic 35mm SLR : Shutter speed, aperture, focus and depth of field
An interesting part of the exposure system is the depth of field indicator on the lens which automatically moves to show the distance range which will be in focus at the selected lens aperture.
This is shown on the picture to the right. This is very useful if the photographer wants to pre-set the focus so they can rapidly take pictures.
Another really useful aspect of the exposure system on the Bessamatic is the filter compensation.
On the picture of the light meter dial above there are some numbers written by the side of the dial. These are compensation factors for filters and are used to make sure the exposure is still correct after a filter has been fitted to the camera.
These days not many people use filters when taking pictures because any affects are easy to apply digitally after the picture has been taken, but when this camera was a popular, current model filters were used for many pictures, especially in black & white photography. For example, a red filter would be used to enhance clouds in a black & white picture.
The only problem with adding filters is that they block some of the light so the exposure set on the camera needed to be altered to compensate. On the Bessamatic the exposure could be set and then when the filter was added the compensation factor (which was printed on the rim of the filter) could be dialled in using the numbers on the light meter dial to get the correct compensation.
Lens and focusing
The lens fitted to the Bessamatic is a Voigtlander Color-Skopar X 50mm f/2.8 unit with a bayonet mount. The lens mount is actually the same basic design as used on the Retina Reflex, although there are slight mechanical differences which stop the lenses being interchangeable. It is apparently possible to modify either lens type to fit the other camera if desired however.
The focusing operation is made easier by a split lever focusing aid in the middle of the viewfinder. In my particular camera the viewfinder has quite a few black dust spots and would be better with a good clean, but I’m a bit wary of taking the top off considering how complex the camera is.

Fa La La: The Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide
It’s my favorite time of the year, you guys: It’s officially socially acceptable to listen to Christmas tunes around the clock, plus I have a valid excuse to spend hours scouring the Internet in search of great gift ideas for you to give your loved ones! (I may also have shopped a little lot in the process. Oops.)
Note: Some of these featured products are from our sponsors, while others are affiliate links that will earn me a small commission.
So without further ado, here’s what I’m digging this year:
FOR THE NOMADIC SOUL
Have a friend or family member in your life who is only satisfied when doing something new, exciting and/or unique? (I know a little something about that!) Well, Tinggly has the cure that ails them. I’ve always been a fan of giving experiences instead of mere stuff, and this is the perfect solution: You can gift your loved one a personalized box that contains a voucher to a bucket list kind of item that most people only dream of. Dinner with a NASA astronaut? James Bond sightseeing tour in Thailand? VIP helicopter over the Vegas Strip? Yoga retreat in India? Tango lesson in Buenos Aires? Tinggly has something for every taste. I also love that you can choose your box by theme: birthday, Christmas, wedding, couples and more.
FOR THE SUN BUM
True story: I allot more space in my luggage to sunglasses than I do to anything else, as heaven forbid I be photographed in the same shades over and over again! But I can’t help it: I’m always outside doing something fun, and if there’s one thing fashion-wise that I care about the most it’s what’s on my face. And I love the selection of women’s sunglasses available at Sunglass Warehouse. I’m a huge fan of Aviators—bonus points if they’re mirrored—and Sunglass Warehouse has so many different kinds of Aviators in stock, many available for under $20. (With as much as I change out my shades, I like keeping my cost per item as low as possible.) For those shopping for the holidays, Sunglass Warehouse is offering 40% off one pair of shades from now through Nov. 30 with the code SPENDLESS40.
FOR THE TECH-HEAVY TRAVELER
We’ve all been there before: You’re traveling all day and your iPhone quickly depletes of all power. It’s near impossible to locate an outlet at an airport, and even my backup battery usually dies well before my travel day has ended (a nightmare scenario as I rely on it for ride-sharing when I finally reach my destination). Which is why Lynktec’s Reeljuice 5X Power Bank + 10 Watt Rapid Wall Charger is my new favorite thing; it’s got four feet of retractable charging cord, and it gives me FIVE full charges before it needs to be re-powered. No more fighting my fellow fliers for coveted outlet space at the airport; in fact, I can even charge my phone while I fly. I’m giving one of these bad boys away down at the bottom of the post, but you can also get 25 percent off (site-wide!) with the code LUNATICATLARGE25.
FOR THE SCIENCE GEEK (OR THE TWEEN)
This Lock Pick Beginners Box is at the very top of my DIY-loving husband’s own list, and for good reason: It gives you the tools (literally and figuratively) that you need to learn how to pick locks, with two different sets of practice locks that have clear sides so that the trainee can see what’s going on behind the scenes with the mechanisms. This is the perfect present for a dude—what husband/boyfriend doesn’t love tinkering?—but also would be a fantastic and affordable option for your fidgety, problem-solving tween.
FOR THE PHILANTHROPIST
You guys know my love for St. Jude runs deep. It’s just so cool what they do there: On top of being one of the top research facilities in the world, St. Jude also ensure that its patients don’t have to worry about a thing (like, for example, cost or lodging for the family) other than getting better. I donate to St. Jude periodically throughout the year, but I’m loving their new initiative, This Shirt. All you have to do is sign up to donate $20 to St. Jude monthly, and you get this exclusive Tee that all your favorite country artists (and your favorite blogger!) are wearing. Because helping others is really the reason for the season.
FOR THE ETERNAL STUDENT
Alert, alert, self plug coming! Kristin Sweeting and I are headed to Portugal next July to teach the ultimate writing, photography, marketing and business workshop—and we’d love for you to join us! We’ve extended registrations through Dec. 31 and have a handful of spots left (and a really amazing group attending so far!). Come learn the ropes of the biz with us while surfing, roaming, doing yoga and exploring Lisbon’s charming surrounds with us in your downtime. Bring your significant other or business partner or come solo. Just think of it as continuing education, a tax write-off and a vacation all rolled into one! As a Christmas special, I’m including two one-hour coaching sessions for anyone who signs up by Dec. 15, one by Skype prior to the trip and one in Portugal.
FOR THE AT-HOME COOK
We’re always experimenting in the kitchen, and try to eat as clean (i.e. no processed food) as possible, meaning that adding herbs and spices is clutch for our style of dining. I’ve had a subscription to Raw Spice Bar for the past year, and I love that every three months, a collection of six individually packaged, freshly-ground, seasonal spices arrives in my mailbox and that I don’t have to commit to buying the entire spice jar before I know I like it. You can even customize your diet to Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, healthy or “eat anything” and, of course, buy more from the Raw Spice Bar shop if you like what you tried.
FOR THE HEALTHY DINER
I’m all about collecting cookbooks, even if SVV is technically the chef in our household. My current favorite is A Beautiful Mess Weekday Weekend, which just came out this month and compiles even more healthy, vegetarian recipes than Elsie and Emma post on their blog. If you already own ABM, may I suggest the following: Laura Lea Balanced, Body Love and Cravings (maybe technically not healthy, but who doesn’t want to look like Chrissy Teigen?!).
FOR THE NEW HOMEOWNER
Earlier this year, my interior designer friend Kendall Simmons and her husband Kane launched Salut Home, a thoughtfully curated collection of home goods and accents, and I drool over all their colorful offerings every time the email hits my inbox. My current obsession? Their new collection of Leah Singh pillows (all things Leah Singh, really)—they have 96 styles in stock! And bonus, they’re on sale for Black Friday (use the code LEAH20), or you can sign up for their newsletter and receive a promo code for 10 percent off.
FOR THE SHUTTERBUG
While I’ll never fully replace my DSLR, ever since my mom gave me the Canon G7X Mark II for Christmas last year, it’s replaced my Canon 6D in my purse as my daily camera. It’s still got the manual settings so I can play around with the exposure, but is small and compact and great for videos. (Check out the travel videos I’ve been making for evidence.)
FOR THE BIG KID IN YOUR LIFE
For SVV’s last birthday, I got him a Phantom 4 Pro+ drone, and he loves it. He was a former aviation tech in the Navy and daydreams about flying all the time. Coupled with his penchant for photography, it was the perfect gift (and has come in handy on many a work project for us, too!). I think the P4 Pro is great for someone who does photography professionally; however, if your loved one isn’t that well-versed in drones yet, I recommend a cheaper, lighter model like the DJI Spark as a starter drone.
FOR THE ADVENTURER
I’ve had five different GoPros since I got my first one seven years ago, and the quality has improved significantly. After watching some of my YouTubers film exclusively with the GoPro Hero 6, I’m adding the newest model to my wishlist for our upcoming ski adventures (and it finally comes equipped with an LCD screen, too—you used to have to buy those a la carte).
FOR THE DOG OWNER
I bought a pair of travel pillows from the entrepreneurs behind Doggie Duffel, and I’m intrigued by their latest (fully-funded) project that’s essentially an all-in-one travel kit for your pup. Ella doesn’t have one of these yet, but I think I know what she’ll be finding under the Christmas tree…
FOR THE ART LOVER
I’ve been a long-time fan (turned friend) of Leslee Mitchell’s, and every time her gorgeous photography pops into my feed, I mentally bookmark it for the next time I’m doing a room makeover. I recently snagged several of her toy car prints, and I’m absolutely in love! Any giftee would be lucky to own a series of prints from this talented artist.
FOR THE SPORTY GIRL
Pretty much all my travel apparel comes from Gap Fit or Athleta—after all, I’m a girl who places comfort above style, but with most athleisure, luckily you can have both!—and a few pieces I’m loving this winter are: this metallic sweatshirt, this jersey keyhole top, this pullover hoodie and these black, leopard-print leggings.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');
JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.
  FOR THE VINTAGE LOVER
Wish you’d grown up in the 70s? (Me, too.) You can embrace a bygone era with this sleek record player in a portable brief case that doubles as a CD player and has USB ports. Bonus: It comes in five different colors!
FOR YOUR FRIEND WHO WORKS FROM HOME
You know that girl who works in her coziest pajamas and barely leaves her computer desk all day long, except to refill her coffee/water/bourbon glass? (AHEM.) Welllll, how much would she love to upgrade from her ratty old PJs to this amazing unicorn onesie? (Really bad, I’ll tell ya!) For one that’s a bit more subtle, Nordstrom currently has this beauty on sale.
Stocking Stuffers Under $50
Savannah Bee Co. body products. I was stoked when I recently spotted Savannah Bee’s entire line, like this body butter, for sale at Target!
Geometric rings. Psst, SVV, looking for something small to get me? Start here.
Paddywax candle. My favorite candles are those that you can reuse the container as tabletop decor after it’s burned out.
Herb mill and grinder. As someone who’s very lazy in the kitchen, I love any tool that does the hard work for me.
S’well bottle. My cousins gave me one of these nifty canteens two years ago, and it’s been a game changer in my travels as I no longer have to abuse the planet by buying bottled water.
Stocking Stuffers Under $20
Taylor Swift’s reputation album. The Old Taylor can’t come to the phone because she’s out there SLAYING it with her new album. Man, this one is going to rack up the awards, and it should be in any music lover’s repertoire of tunes.
Flamingo ornament. I’m a sucker for all things flamingos and also ornaments, and Nordstrom at Home has a whole lot of cute, travel-themed ones, many of which are on sale.
Vintage maps. SVV and I are map lovers to the core. We own more than 30 globes and a number of vintage maps, but those are tough to find, which is why I like this Etsy store, which has both domestic and international city prints.
Monogrammed copper wine stopper. Because who doesn’t want their initial atop their vino?!
Twist Magazine’s winter issue. Launched by my good friend Keryn, this new travel publication is a gorgeous glossy that’s the perfect stuffer for the family traveler.
A taco holder. What taco lover doesn’t need this in their life?!
Stocking Stuffers Under $10
Sheet masks. I’ve been addicted to sheet masking for a year now, and while the TonyMoly variety pack is my go-to order, I’m equally as obsessed with these reindeer and penguin masks from Target.
eos holiday lip balm. I keep an eos in every bag I own, and I just popped this trio of holiday flavors (peppermint mocha, vanilla bean, ginger) into my shopping cart!
A manatee tea infuser. Or if manatees aren’t your thing (you crazy), there’s also a sloth, shark or loch ness monster.
iPhone charging cords in myriad colors. Show of hands if you, like me, are always on the hunt for that missing iPhone/USB/mini-USB cord?
The Oregon Trail Card Came. Because kids these days don’t even know what it’s like to ford a river and then die of dysentery when you’re almost there.
Pop socket. This little doodad changed my life—and made me stop dropping my iPhone altogether. I didn’t know how I’d feel about it, but I love it.
Rare earth magnets. We bought these to tack things to our wall on our four-month RTW cruise, and they’ve been a game-changer on actually keeping all of our cards and photos up on the fridge. They never fall, like, ever.
Since it doesn’t feel like the holidays until I start giving away gifts, I’m giving away one big C&C stocking stuffer grab bag, full of some of my favorite things, including the Lynktec charging station, a selection of Raw Spice Bar spices, and plenty of other stocking stuffers for you to give your family and friends (or keep for yourself—I won’t judge!). The value of this box o’ fun is currently over $300—also brimming with music, beauty items, and other odds and ends I’ve purchased and wanted to share with you—though I’ll likely continue to add to that as I finish my Black Friday shopping.
All you have to do to enter is tell me your favorite holiday tradition. Don’t have one? Tell me what’s the top of your Christmas wishlist! It’s that simple. Leave a comment below, and I’ll randomly choose a winner of this bag o’ fun on Dec. 1.

Top 30 Beauty Blogs of 2017 | NinjaOutreach
Interested in getting a quick list of the world’s most influential beauty blogs? Well, we came up with just the perfect list for you. Read on for our top beauty blogs of 2017.
Methodology
We get a lot of questions from our users—and one of the most common is—how can you use Ninja Outreach to find influencers? We are an influencer prospecting and outreach tool, after all.
So for this article, I used our tool to prospect for influencers in a burgeoning and glamorous niche—the beauty blogging industry.
Take note that not every search is the same—results vary according to the keywords you use, just as your keywords vary according to your purpose.
You might be a beauty product company looking for beauty influencers to help promote your product, or you may be a beauty journalist looking for renowned beauty experts to interview for an article.
In my case, I’m interested in compiling a list of the most influential blogs and bloggers. And I want to start by running a search for the highest-earning beauty bloggers and then manually following the golden cookie crumbs trail from there.
So back to our tool, I clicked Content Prospecting and typed my keywords into the search bar. Hitting enter should produce the trending articles on this subject.
Here is a screenshot of results for keyword set A.
Here is a screenshot of the results from keyword set B.
I continued playing around with keywords and manually whittled down the results until I felt pretty confident I had enough material I could use for this article.
Once I’ve finalized my list, I used our Ninja Outreach chrome extension to check each beauty blog’s SEO stats and follower count.
Also, note that this list will focus on blogger influencers and will not be including established experts in the industry such as heavyweights Pat McGrath, Lisa Eldridge, Caroline Hirons, etc., as they are on a different league of their own.
So, here are the top 25 blogs for 2017 that I found, divided by two categories.
Social Media Beauty Influencers
1. Huda Beauty
Blogger: Huda Kattan
Instagram: @hudabeauty 21.7 million followers
Youtube: Huda Beauty 1.9 million subscribers
With over 20 million Instagram followers and almost 2 million Youtube subscribers, Dubai-based Huda Kattan tops our beauty influencer list. She dominated the beauty scene in the Middle East early and eventually climbed the ranks to become one of the wealthiest beauty influencers of Instagram.
From product reviews to makeup tutorials to beauty blog stardom, Huda has gone a long way from her childhood fascination with makeup. According to PopSugar, Huda is able to earn around $18k per post.
She has since launched her own beauty product line, Huda Beauty, which is doing quite well. In fact, Allure magazine referred to Huda as the woman who “sold” Sephora on false eyelashes when the cosmetics chain agreed to sell her false eyelash line—Huda Beauty’s first product.
2. Zoella
Blogger: Zoe Sugg
Instagram: @zoella 11.2 million followers; @zoellabeauty 1.1 million followers
Youtube: Zoella 12 million followers
From beauty influencer to celebrity businesswoman, Zoe Sugg—better known by her online moniker, Zoella, is living the Youtube millionaire dream.
The English vlogger started her channel by filming makeup tutorials, reviewing beauty products, talking about beauty, and even injecting some personal commentary into her content. Her wholesome, Disney teen star like appeal resonated with her audience, and barely four years since she began posting online, Zoe is already netting close to $400k annually.
She has since engaged in other projects, one of which was producing her first (ghostwritten) novel, Girl Online. The book instantly became a New York Times bestseller, breaking the record for fastest-selling, first-week book sales from a debut novelist.
3. NikkieTutorials
Blogger: Nikkie de Jager
Instagram: @nikkietutorials 8.4 million followers
Youtube: NikkieTutorials 7.8 million subscribers
An enthusiast-turned-professional makeup artist, Nikkie de Jager was ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the highest-earning beauty influencers of the year. With her almost 9 million followers, millions of Youtube views, and collaborations with the likes of Maybelline, Too Faced, and celebrity influencers such as Kim Kardashian and Jessie J, among others, it’s no wonder this Dutch blogger is third on our list.
Armed only with her mother’s digital camera, cardboard, and nothing much else, Nikkie’s first makeup tutorial in Youtube got just eight views and three comments.
Fast forward almost ten years later, and the shy girl who was inspired by the makeup looks in America’s hit reality TV series The Hills has turned herself into one of Youtube’s millionaires.
4. Wake Up and Makeup
Blogger: Manal Shaikh
Instagram: @wakeupandmakeup 11.7 million followers; @itsmanalshaikh 1.6 million followers
Youtube: itsWAKEUPANDMAKEUP 52k followers
Despite online news site Fashionista referring to her as one of the more laidback types of beauty bloggers, Manal Shaikh’s online influence is anything but lackluster. At only 23, she was able to grow her three Instagram accounts’ follower counts organically by the millions—and she didn’t have to post tons of her own selfies to do so.
Compared to the other beauty bloggers in this list, Manal did not put all her eggs in the beauty influencer golden basket. Despite her passion and skill for makeup and nail art, she refers to herself in her online accounts as a “Social Media Strategist” instead of beauty blogger or influencer—perhaps signaling that she does not intend to be a beauty personality, but more of a beauty curator and digital marketer.
Whatever the case, the success of her accounts is pretty strong evidence to show how she absolutely nails social media marketing.
5. Michelle Phan
Blogger: Michelle Phan
Instagram: @michellephan 2.1 million followers
Youtube: Michelle Phan 8.9 million subscribers
I don’t know about you, but I believe this beauty blog craze all began with Michelle Phan. If landing on the covers of Forbes and Nylon, or getting featured by magazines the likes of W Magazine, CNBC, and The Daily Mail (among many others) doesn’t solidify her status as a mega beauty influencer, then I don’t know what does. It's an understatement to say that the rise of Michelle Phan has rocked the beauty industry—and opened a Pandora’s box of possibilities for other beauty bloggers.
Between 2007 and 2011, when the beauty blog pioneer was at her peak, she had almost 2 million subscribers. Her video channel had more than 500 million views. Meanwhile, a big brand like Lancôme only had over 4k subscribers and 5 million views. And if she hadn’t gone on a long hiatus when Em cosmetics, her makeup line collaboration with L'Oréal fell through, she would probably still be on the top of this list.
Needless to say, Michelle has since recovered from her personal time out from the digital world.  She has since repurchased Em from L'Oréal and has relaunched the line on her own. Just this year, she also launched her beauty sampling startup, Ipsy, which is currently valued at $500 million. In total, the value of Michelle’s “empire” is estimated to be nearly $100 million.
6. JeffreeStar
Blogger: Jeffree Star
Instagram: @jeffreestar 5.1 million followers
Youtube: JeffreeStar 5.4 million subscribers
The one time MySpace pop star-in-the-making (he once outsold Justin Timberlake on iTunes) turned beauty blogger and semi-celebrity began his love affair with makeup at 13. With a model for a mother, it was bound to happen. Jeffree recalled how he started by copying magazine ad looks and borrowing his mother’s makeup.
Soon, he was traveling around the world, learning, teaching, and continuing to practice his craft. From fashion editorials to music videos, to weddings, he has done them all.
Recently, Jeffree crossed another thing off his bucket list when he launched his own makeup line. He also toured and hobnobbed with celebrities—even modeled for jewelry designer Tarina Tarantino—bringing his makeup skills, striking personality, and merchandise along with him. As of 2017, Jeff’s net worth is valued at around $5 million.
7. Carli Bybel
Instagram: @carlibel 4.8 million followers
Youtube: CarliBybel 5.6 million subscribers
Carli Bybel posted her first Youtube video about hairstyling in 2011. If judged by the eyes of today’s Youtube natives who, by now, are used to sleeker productions, the quality is comparably amateur to laughable. The blogger admitted to having a chuckle of her own when she revisited this maiden project.
As Carli has gamely shared in an interview with Fox5NY, even her mother was skeptical about her dream to become an internet star.
These days, however, Carli is laughing all the way to the bank with monthly earnings of over $16k per month from her Youtube channel alone. And yes, production levels are now more on point.
8. Manny Gutierrez
Blogger: Manny Gutierrez
Instagram: @mannymua733 4 million followers
Youtube: MannyMua733 3.6 million subscribers
Seeing men wear makeup can be disconcerting to some, but that didn’t stop Manny Gutierrez from doing his thing—and owning it. And while he admits that about half the people who saw him wearing makeup would be weirded out, about another half would be appreciative.
But perhaps the best display of this appreciation goes to Maybelline, for naming Manny as their first male ambassador.
Manny, who believes makeup should be inspiring and inclusive, cultivates the same spirit with his followers—which could probably explain how he was able to grow his community so quickly, especially since he started getting into makeup late—already in his early 20s. But barely four years later, he’s gone so far, so fast—with an estimated net worth of $350k—a testament to this beauty influencer’s brand power.
9. PONY
Blogger: Hye-Min Park
Instagram: @ponysmakeup 4.2 million followers
Youtube: PONY Syndrome 3 million subscribers
From graphic designer to South Korea’s top makeup influencer and K-pop star CL’s makeup artist, Hye-Min Park, or Pony, the owner of the beauty blog PONY, is one to watch.
Before becoming a hit with an audience in the millions on her Youtube and Instagram, Pony used to model products for Korean e-commerce stores. She now has her own makeup line, PONY, which is doing exceptionally well and has recently partnered with beauty box subscription service, Memebox.
She has published a book on beauty and was also featured in Allure and Harper’s Bazaar, all aside from gracing top beauty magazines in South Korea and the rest of Asia.
10. Kandeej
Blogger: Kandee Johnson

Compact Digital Cameras
A small, compact point & shoot camera with the flexibility to function well in low-light conditions will be your best friend at a live performance. After I assume photographs (panorama, road, or portrait) now, I take the DLux 4 , and depart the Canon in the closet. Seize the first image, and a ghosted model of it seems superimposed over the live preview to be able to choose an appropriate topic for every extra exposure. Strobes are adjustable lighting arrays that may angle the flash so that it would not replicate instantly again into the digicam lens, thus lowering backscatter and allowing for more artistic photographs. The autofocus system is also fairly spectacular, so you could conceivably use this digital camera to shoot sports activities and action. Sony's Xperia Z5 comes with a 2,900mAh battery and a promise that the gadget will last up to two days on a cost. Whereas that's not quite as good because the 50 percent enchancment Apple has claimed, the iPhone SE nonetheless has the most effective battery lifetime of any iPhone we've examined in the past two years. Nonetheless, there are actually fairly just a few compacts with built-in wifi, which can be used to transfer pictures to other devices. The PENTAX Q will probably be accessible in white or best point and shoot camera black physique models and shipped in a Standard Prime lens (accessible in silver) kit. Panasonic refreshes HD camcorder range: 3MOS, 1MOS and Waterproof offerings. For travel and street pictures, the Fujifilm X30 can go head-to-head with any compact camera available on the market. It was the first Panasonic camera to use a sensor that does not have an anti-aliasing filter, which mainly means you will get some highly detailed photos from this miniature marvel. Continuing the legacy of its award profitable sequence, Ricoh GR II is all that you need for revolutionizing your photography without being a huge burden in your wallet. In case your 340 HS battery is reading as dead even when it is not, or the digicam is powering off randomly when in use, examine the advisory to see when you're eligible for a free inspection or alternative'from Canon straight. Here is a hyperlink to pictures that were taken with it. I discovered that I needed that amount of zoom for lots of the cat photographs. The new Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II has enormous boots to fill, as the original RX10 superzoom is among the finest cameras we've ever seen. For extra details about Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras, please visit /lumix. Household Supplies Brooms, Ground Brushes & Dustpans Mops, Refills & Mop units Sponges & Cleaning Cloths Pegs & Garments Strains Housekeeping Dusters. However in case that RX100 IV point-and-shoot wasn't good enough for you, the company is now introducing the RX1R II , a full-body pocket-sized shooter with a forty two.4-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor. For skilled underwater photographers and critical enthusiasts, the ability to make use of their advanced digicam beneath the waves, whereas nonetheless having the ability to entry the important manual control buttons and dials justifies the price. There are only a few models across all manufacturers that provide a built-in EVF. The remaining have been closely matched, however we liked the pictures coming from Samsung's SL820 most constantly. Remember, too, that among the most convenient cameras for iMovie are already bundled inside Apple's bestselling smartphone and music player. One of many hallmarks of an SLR, and DSLR, is that these cameras are designed so photographers can manipulate the machinery and management their own settings. I've a G7X II since half a year as at all times-carry-on camera and don't regret it. I attempted Lumixs and Sonys at last yr's Photokina and did not like their handling. The stabilization additionally helps with stills - we had been able to pull off 1/10s low-light pictures with nearly no visible shake. Sony's A6000 is the mirrorless camera you may want to own, ships this April for $800 with lens. This extra snug design is compliments of Sony's Translucent Mirror expertise, which additionally allows faster autofocus. The A6000 comes bundled with Sony's NP-FW50 battery back, which has been transport with the company's mirrorless cameras because the NEX-three , a model that first hit stores just about 4 years ago. With the Smart Gesture UI you possibly can rapidly scroll by means of your pictures by barely tilting the gadget in either course or by choosing the appropriate images for a slide show. Whether or not it is all of the bells and whistles within the type of fingers-on controls, a built-in viewfinder or a big sensor for optimum quality, there are every kind of advanced compacts to go well with different tastes. Add to this X-Processor Pro image processing engine and you're going to get a robust instrument prepared to conquer the brand new horizons of images. The Galaxy S5 mini is each taller and thicker than the Z3 Compact, with a 4.5-inch 720p screen, quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 8MP digicam and a pair of,100mAh battery. Maybe most notable to advanced'photographers is the inclusion of UNCOOKED picture seize, which allows for higher flexibility when processing pictures. As with the other cameras here, the Fuji gives full HD videos recording as well as some inventive filters that may add fun effects to your films. Use the digicam's zoom perform: If you want to minimize out some of the surrounding atmosphere out of your composition, create a extra shallow depth of subject or create some distance between your digicam and your topic. On the downside, the SX620 HS's photographs are barely fuzzier than the 360 HS's in shiny gentle. Natively, it's nice for fish portraits to semi large angle, but like all different 1-inch sensor cameras we've got seen, it lacks good macro capabilities without an accessory lens. BTW, as an added bonus, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS60 can even shoot in RAW. It is the latest one of the ZS series (Traveler Zoom), born as a traveling compact camera. Also, the autofocus may be very quick, which is very essential for individuals who come from utilizing dSLRs which might be typically 5 occasions the value. The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS50 additionally features full HD video recording in addition to up to 200fps (in VGA, 100fps in HD) high-speed video capture, allowing you the option of top quality slow motion play again - very entertaining. The 35mm most thickness (with the lens closed) means it will just about fit into a breast pocket or baggy shorts, but the 305g weight could compel you to put money into a case, belt clip or strap. It is Panasonic's entry-level compact system digital camera, and chooses to shed a number of pro-pleasing features with a purpose to keep the thing small. With retro designs and fingers-on controls for enthusiasts, Fujifilm's X-sequence cameras have constructed a stable following, primarily those who fondly bear in mind the days of film cameras. With a spread of 25-500mm, you have got every thing from vast-angle to shut-up telephoto. Sony has released 5'variations of its high-finish RX100 sequence so far, however the authentic RX100 presently remains to be one of our favorite journey cameras. Companies like Fuji, Canon and Olympus continue to make great DSLRs and interchangeable lens cameras for photographers who're serious about their image-taking. When set to slave TTL mode, the underwater strobe simply mimics the digital camera's constructed-in strobe to produce an automatic strobe exposure. On the opposite finish of the spectrum, level-and-shoot cameras just like the Polaroid Snap are unbelievable, enjoyable and cheap devices that supply the novelty of instantaneous photographs with the comfort of recent know-how. Canon targets Sony's fashionable RX100 with PowerShot G7 X level-and-shoot. Boasting 8 megapixels and full 1080P video recording, what you lose in megapixels you make up for in recording choices. Most of our test photographs have been outdoors, which additionally gave us the chance to see how effectively LCDs performed below vivid daylight.

Nikon marks 100th anniversary July 25
By Karen Knapstein
Ten Things You Didn’t Know About: Nikon
1 The company now known as Nikon has been in business for 100 years. Two of Japan’s leading optical manufacturers merged, with capital investment from Koyata Iwasaki, the president of Mitsubishi, July 25, 1917, forming Nippon Kogaku K.K. (“Japan Optical Industries Co., Ltd.”) Immediately after, it merged with Fujii Lens Manufacturing. Headquartered in Tokyo, the newly formed optics firm begins researching optical glass in 1918. However, it suspended operations because of technical difficulties. (The company’s name is changed to Nikon Corporation in 1988.)
2 First marketed in 1921, Nikon’s MIKRON ultra-small-prism binoculars were one of the first binocular models developed, designed and manufactured by the firm. MIKRON binoculars are re-released in 1997, again proving popular with collectors.
3 The name “Nikon” was adopted for small-sized cameras in 1946. However, it wasn’t until 1948 that a camera actually bore that name. It was first sold as simply “Nikon,” but “Model I” was soon added to distinguish it from subsequent camera models.
4 Japan took the lead in professional photography equipment in 1959 thanks to the introduction of the Nikon F single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. It has a motorized advance making the camera capable of exposing four frames per second. The camera also has lenses from 21mm to 1000mm, giving photographers speed, diversity, and reliable image capturing. In November 1965, 6 years after the release, the 200,000th Nikon F was presented to photographer David Douglas Duncan. The famous photographer made the Nikon and NIKKOR brand names known all over the world. Nikon F-series cameras were produced until May 1974; more than 850,000 were made.

7 The Nikon F camera’s use by explorers is a testament to its toughness durability and reliability. Influenced by Japanese climbing parties using Nikon cameras on their Mount Everest expeditions, in 1963, the American Mount Everest expedition purchase 20 Nikon F systems to document the adventure. The group, including James W. Whittaker, who is the first American to reach Everest’s summit, reached the peak May 1, 1963, and the Nikon Fs reportedly “delivered a fully satisfactory performance in the recording of valuable measurements and investigations.”

According to NASA, the equipment for the Apollo 16 mission included a 35mm Nikon F “fitted with a 55mm f/l.2 lens for astronomical and dim-light photographic experiments.” The Nikons perform well; the ISS is equipped with several. As of July 2010, more than 700,000 photos had been snapped by Nikon cameras from outside the earth’s atmosphere. I believe they thought that they had the world's biggest piece of shit on their arms," says David Lester, who labored as a second unit manufacturing supervisor and specialised in area ship explosions.Lester did not fairly blame them for his or her response: "You bought to recollect what the dailies regarded like. Mark Hamill swinging a broomstick round."Alec Guinness wasn't precisely bragging about his function.Similar to these Fox execs, Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't precisely certain what to make of the film."I requested him at some point, 'Do you inform all people what you are engaged on?' He mentioned 'No, no, no. I preserve it a bit quiet,' " Christopher Tucker, who did animatronic make-up for the movie, recollects the legendary actor saying. "The script learn a bit like an American comedian. It simply did not sound like a profitable movie, so no person actually thought it was going wherever."Garrick Hagon, who performed Luke’s childhood pal and later fellow Insurgent pilot Biggs Darklighter, additionally recalled his run-in with the less-than-amiable legendary actor. “I didn’t actually have quite a bit to do with him, I simply sat beside him in awe, however I advised him I’d labored with him as soon as earlier than as a toddler and I anticipated that to possibly begin off a dialog however he simply mentioned, ‘That’s a very long time in the past,’ and that was just about the tip of that dialog, so we simply sat in silence,” Hagon recalled, laughing on the reminiscence.Tucker admits he needs he'd had extra foresight. After engaged on the well-known Cantina scene, he may have grabbed a couple of of the creations he'd made — however he opted to not."In these days, there was no restriction. In case you made one thing like that, then you definitely would preserve it. These days you are not allowed to try this," says Tucker. In the present day, his work can be price a small fortune.Lucas lower the Dying Star battle utilizing World Conflict II motion pictures. There was no solution to correctly storyboard the movie's signature battle, so Lucas spliced collectively aerial warfare footage from World Conflict II motion pictures. As a result of these movies have been in black and white, he manually coloured within the cells to indicate whether or not it was a Insurgent pilot or Imperial fighter.     "We knew precisely body good the place all these pictures needed to go. You could not try this at the moment with out a man who thought that means," mentioned Lester. "You did not have to name him and ask what he needed there. It was on movie and you may take a look at it, even when it wasn't his movie."Because the staff at Industrial Mild & Magic accomplished their work, the black and white airplanes would get replaced with X-Wings and TIE fighters."After I was employed, there have been nonetheless two airplane pictures left within the reels. It was humorous to be engrossed on this high-tech area battle after which instantly lower to a German Stuka diving in direction of Poland in the course of the Blitzkreig," recollects sound results engineer Richard L. Anderson. "I'm wondering if a duplicate of the unique lower, with solely duped airplanes, nonetheless exists. That ought to go in a museum."Chewbacca initially regarded a bit of an excessive amount of like an ape. With a lot to supervise, Lucas and producer Gary Kurtz did not at all times have a solution for what precisely it was they needed — together with for a few of the movie's signature characters."They left it actually as much as us. When it got here to issues like Chewbacca — what was Chewbacca? We did not know what Chewbacca was, nor did they," recollects Tucker.Enter Stewart Freeborn, who had simply performed make-up on 2001: A House Odyssey, the place he developed monkey animatronics that allowed actors in monkey fits to open their mouths — and have the mouths of the monkeys open too. That was an innovation he dropped at Chewie."Chewbacca ended up trying a bit like a monkey initially. From that, we determined the one factor we may do was get a physique swimsuit, knotted with hair like a big wig, so we had all these long-haired physique fits and it fitted on a part-time hospital porter," recollects Tucker. "His title was Peter Mayhew. He was 7'10 or one thing. He was very tall and in order that was how Chewbacca acquired born."Even the Banthas had costume fittings.Mayhew's Chewbacca could have been the tallest protagonist on set, however he hardly had the largest costume in A New Hope. Somebody needed to go measure the elephants that might go on to play the Banthas, Tatooine's larger-than-life creatures. Lester was roped into happening a measuring expedition with artwork director Leon Erickson."At one level, I mentioned, 'How the hell are we going to do the measuring? I am not comfy holding the tip of the tape,' " recollects Lester. "He smiled at me … and he reached into the again seat and took out three roles of digital camera tape, a bit of greater than an inch broad of white cloth," recollects Lester. "Needed to be 75 or 100 toes every that he had diligently unrolled in his house and laid out on the ground and marked off each six inches. And coloured each different six inches with black. All I needed to do was creep round that elephant twice and stick that tape on him. And he took photos on each angle."Star Wars went to San Diego Comedian-Con in 1976, and other people weren't all that excited. To lure an viewers to a panel about an unknown property, the Star Wars promotional staff employed star energy from Marvel Comics, bringing author Roy Thomas and artist Howard Chaykin to speak about their Star Wars comedian e book adaptation. (Saving pays off!)Typically, engaged on a legendary movie entails heaps and many typing.Lucy Autrey Wilson landed what many may think about a dream job, assistant to George Lucas on the delivery of Star Wars. By fall 1974, she was spending her days in a Victorian home in San Anselmo, Calif., typing the script time and again on an IBM Selectric typewriter"As a result of I had learn Star Wars so many instances whereas typing the screenplay, I had change into very within the story.  However, like everybody else on the time, I didn’t assume the film would do a lot," recollects Wilson, who went on to have a distinguished profession with Lucasfilm."After Star Wars was launched in 1977, it was wonderful to exit to dinner, and discover virtually everybody within the restaurant speaking concerning the film I had been engaged on, to see that very same film on the covers of the entire magazines I subscribed to and, if I occurred to be carrying one thing with a Star Wars brand on it, to be chased down the road by folks wanting me to assist them get a job at Lucasfilm," she provides.Days on set might be as magical as you'd guess."The factor I bear in mind most vividly is being out on set on the primary day of filming in Tunisia, and seeing the solar glinting off C3PO’s golden armor — it was actually magical to see the script and characters coming to life like that," says Patricia Carr, manufacturing coordinator in the course of the U.Ok. and Tunisian shoot.Later, she as soon as got here again from the restroom to see royalty in her chair."I returned to my workplace. I discovered Carrie Fisher, sitting in my seat in entrance of my typewriter, pretending to be me, however in full Princess Leia garb," says Carr. "She used to go to us within the workplace usually and at all times made us smile."However different days you virtually lose the roof to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s house.Climate within the Tunisian will be harsh and unpredictable. As such, sure occupational hazards can usually shock even probably the most ready of set designers.Lesley Dilley, artwork director on the movie, recalled a meteorological thriller he and his staff needed to remedy the day earlier than principal images was supposed to start.“We needed to construct an enormous disc to position on a low, spherical wall. This was a really heavy disc, a part of Luke Skywalker’s aunt and uncle’s home and it was the rooftop to an underground room,” Dilley defined. “We left the realm on the finish of the day and once we got here again within the morning this disc, which took ten folks or extra to raise, had disappeared. It was fairly horrifying as a result of the crew was coming within the day afterwards to start out taking pictures. The disc was gone.”So what occurred to the unaccounted for roof? “ We lastly deduced it was lifted by the wind, like a Frisbee,” mentioned Dilley. “I imply this factor was most likely near 20-25 toes in diameter. It acquired lifted up, we came upon, by the wind and we couldn’t discover it.”  A search started for the lacking prop, however fortunately the desert had left Dilley’s crew an important clue: “We knew the place it went as a result of there was a line within the sand within the desert the place it had gone a whole lot of yards. All of us exit searching for it and we lastly get there and takes us about 10 folks to choose it up and stroll again with it –  Folks have been rolling within the sand, laughing at us from far distances.” Let's block advertisements! What's in our Tech Bag: Full RTW Tech Packing Checklist
When you’re planning long term travel, it means that inevitably, you’re going to be bringing a gadget or two alone with you.  At bare minimum, it’s probably going to be your cell phone. However, depending what your goals are while abroad, you might plan on a lot more.
We knew we wanted to film our entire trip, so we basically took a studio with us.  Think “more tech, less t shirts”.
So without further ado, this is all the tech we brought along on our year long trip along along with why. (And yes, this is way too many electronics.  It’s nonsense, and a lot of things were sent home along the way.)
Winner of the Cheap, Simple, and Best Gadget if You're Going to Buy Anything on This Page award...
Kikkerland Universal Electric Travel Adapter- We lucked out and chose the best electric socket adapters. Sounds like a really simple thing to shop for but the crazy amount of options makes it super convoluted and overly complicated.  Here is what's great about these travel adapters-modern electronics have chargers that help regulate the power they are getting.  In the past, you needed an actual voltage converter so you didn't ruin your gadgets.  Now, most (if not at all) charging cords have that feature built into them.  That meant we were able to charge our drone, laptops, iPhones, and cameras everywhere from New Zealand to Vietnam to Cyprus using only these VERY simple adapters. Buy It Here.
GoPro & GoPro Accessories
GoPro Hero4 Black- Bought on the road because our GoPro Hero3 started acting wonky.  We chose the Hero 4 Black because the recording specs (resolution and frame rate) are higher than that of the Silver.  The Silver however has a LCD screen so you can more easily see what you're recording.  It really comes down to preference.  As this was written in 2017, the Hero 5 is now available, but we're still very happy with the performance and improved battery life of the Hero4. Buy It Here
GoPro Hero3- We've had this camera since it was released.  While it still occasionally acts up in the heat, we can't complain about the longevity of the camera.  We used it daily and beat the piss out of it for a couple years and now its our “stunt” camera. That means that the if we need to do any shot where there is a decent chance of losing the camera forever or damaging it, we'll pull out the good old Hero3. Buy It Here
GoPro Chesty- I fought bringing this the whole time.  It’s bulky.  You look stupid wearing it.  It's hot.  However, if you can suck it up, it makes for great POV shots on a motorcycle/scooter as well as when you’re hiking.  Downside?  You have to be that guy wearing a chesty. Buy It Here.
Feiyu Tech G4-QD 3-Axis Gimbal - One piece of tech we wish we had from the beginning of the trip.   Read more about it here. Watch our video review here. If you don't buy this specific gimbal, do yourself a huge favor, and at least get a gimbal.  A complete gamechanger and surefire way to better footage. Buy It Here.
Movo External Microphone for GoPro- Exactly what it sounds like- a small microphone that attaches to GoPro via mini USB.  The sound is EONS better than the standard internal mic on the GoPro.  We also picked up some fuzzy windscreens to eliminate wind noise. Buy It Here.
GoPro 3 Way Mount- A bit of a dilemma here... the GoPro branded three way mount is WAY too expensive at $60.  Plus, if you lost a screw for it, they give you a hell of a time to just order a new one.  (We managed to lose two screws).  On the plus side, the mount is built tough and stood up to plenty of abuse.  On the plus PLUS side, there is a great knockoff version for less than $20. Buy the way overpriced version here. Buy the cheap version by searching for "generic gopro 3 way mount" on eBay.
GoPro Dive Housing Case- An absolute must have.  The waterproof case made it an easy decision to bring the Hero3 or Hero4 with us everywhere.  A waterproof case is necessary, especially if your travels take you to South East Asia where if its not raining, you're likely playing in water in the jungle, at the beach or in a pool. Buy It Here.
GoPro Orange Floaty- If you’re using a GoPro in its waterproof case, you might as well have the orange floaty attached so that when you inevitably drop it, its not gone forever.  For example, if you were on a sailboat island hopping trip in Thailand and your name was Allison, you could very well mistakenly drop a GoPro without a floaty in 25 feet of water and just hope your husband is a skilled enough free diver to retrieve it. Buy It Here.
Drone & Drone Accessories
Drone Carrying Bag- I've written about this bag at length. It's ugly as hell.  I hate looking at it.  It also did a tremendously great job of protecting our drone during its 10 months on the road.  It wasn't amazing comfortable to hike all day in, but then again, what drone bag is. Read more about it here.  Buy this stupid bag here. Or don't-it's stupid.
Phantom 3 Professional- Back in my day, when you wanted to travel the world with a drone, you took this huge ass one with you because ya didn't really have a choice.  These days there are more choices than ever. However, at the time of writing, GoPro has recalled all their Karma drones because they kept falling out of the sky and Kickstarter projects like Lilly have been canceled.  If I had $1k burning a hole in my pocket I'd probably go pick up a DJI Mavic.   However, I still love our Phantom 3 Pro and they can be picked up for less than half of what I originally paid. Buy It Here.
PolarPro DJI Phantom 3 Lens Filter- When it comes to shooting pretty video, we're about as knowledgeable as a couple monkeys smashing rocks together. Really.  If you've ever seen anything pretty on our site or videos, its completely by mistake.  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. We quickly discovered that filming with the drone without a lens filter on it led to consistently over exposed footage.  We also learned that if we shot in AUTO mode that our footage would end up changing color as we moved about.  The only solution was to buy a set of filters for new light conditions and then shoot in MANUAL mode.  If you're buying a drone, buy some filters.  There is no real way around it.  We like the screw on filters as we lost the slip on ones before during a flight.  Buy It Here.
Tools for Phantom 3- I brought along assorted electronics screwdrivers that fit my Phantom.  You might want to do a bit of research to find out what size and shape of driver head you will need if you need to do repairs in the field.
iPad Mini 2: We had a friend deliver this to us while abroad because it was just too difficult to fly the drone using the tiny screen on our phones.  iPhone 5 doesn’t work with the Phantom 3, and even the iPhone 6 was incredibly difficult to use.  An upgrade to an iPad Mini 2 let me more easily see any sort of obstacles that could cause mid air disasters, including wires and angry seagulls. I’d say it paid for itself ten times over by helping me avoid what would have been some amazing crashes. Buy it Here. Watch my drone fall out of the sky here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBRdHF1s0Go
Other Cameras & Camera Equipment
Samsung NX2000 Mirrorless Camera- We wanted a still camera that was better than what our phones were packing.  This was more compact than a DSLR, was easy enough for us camera newbies to operate well, and shot decent video for us.  Would recommend an alternative option though, as despite having an accessory shoe, Samsung no longer sells a compatible external mic for this camera. Buy It Here.
Canon Vixia HF G10 Camcorder- While obviously higher quality footage than shooting video on an iphone we were a bit more concerned with how it would stand up to a daily beating of hiking, surprise rain storms, and driving down rough roads.  That, mixed with zero space left in the day bag We mailed this home 2 months into the trip and now just use it for shooting videos inside. Buy It Here.
Telephoto Lens- (compatible with Samsung NX2000) We brought this with us, only to quickly determine that we didn’t need it.  This lens takes beautiful pictures, but we found ourselves constantly conflicted on whether it was worth throwing in our day bag..  We needed the shorter lens to film most of the time, and between the Samsung still camera, a GoPro, a drone, and an external battery pack, the telephoto lens just seldom seemed like it was worth carrying along. We could see how anyone who was really into still photography wouldn’t leave home without it though. Don't buy one.
Tripod: A $20 impulse purchase at an electronic store in Vietnam was carried with us for the rest of the trip. Mostly used so that we could shoot product review videos during our motorbike trip.  The other thing that it ended up being used for was time lapse photos with the Time Lapse accessory attached (below).
Timelapse/Panoramic Camera Mount- Basically a glorified egg timer that you mount your camera, GoPro, or iPhone on.  You can then shoot a timelapse while you get a smooth rotation of the camera.  Allison found hers on Amazon for less than $20.  Initially skeptical on bringing such a single purchase gadget, I think the shots that we ended up getting with it made it well worth it. Buy It Here.
iPhone 6- Allison's phone (but really an additional camera). High quality video and the ability to do slow-mo.  Also, used to fly the drone for the first half of the trip.  Amazingly, it never had a battery above 50% the entire trip but that might have been (definitely was) user-error.  Due to an American Telephone contract this phone could not be unlocked, leaving us with only Tim's phone (below) to add a SIM card to. You already own one of these.
Iphone external Mic- Used with a deadcat so that we could record audio that didn’t sound like steaming garbage.  You can only film so much before you get fed up with wind noise over your interesting banter. Buy It Here.
Other Tech Items
Iphone 5- Tims iPhone.  Old enough to be out of contract so it was unlocked.  That meant we could pick up cheap SIM cards overseas.  You don’t get any magic points for making travel hard on yourself, and the ability to at least use the internet let alone make a call while you’re out doing daily activities is even more valuable when abroad than at home.  You already own one of these.
Otterbox for Iphone 5- Tim loves to drop his phone.  Loves it!  But at least he can admit it.  Though an otterbox can be clunky, it offers great fall protection and makes it at least a little water resistant for that unplanned rainstorm you’ll get caught in. Buy It Here.
Lenovo Yoga Pro- Bought on ebay used.  These things were easily one of the best choices we made for our trip.   Inexpensive enough that it wouldn’t be devastating if one was lost or destroyed.  Really lightweight, compact, and powerful enough to edit video.  Also, as someone who thought touch screen laptops were stupid...the touch screens turned out awesome. This is what we edit all of our video on.  They are also awesome on the airplane/bus/train/ferry because they rotate around for different tablet-style screen use.  Check out our full laptop article if you're looking for more info.
Earbuds- You can listen to stuff, or use them to not pretend you’re somewhere else.  Don’t bring your $100 Beats earbuds.  Bring cheap ones-you can pick up a new pair almost anywhere. You already own these.
Headphone-splitter- A must if you’re traveling with someone else.  Also a great way to make friends on planes and trains. In our specific case, Allison hates to charge her phone and computer, so she was always VERY interested in whatever movie I might be watching during our longer flights. Buy It Here.
Small USB Battery Pack- You know you’re gonna need some power because someone always forgets to charge the cameras. Buy It Here.
Big-ass USB Battery Pack- You’ll probably need even more power because someone always forgets to charge the cameras. Or their phone. Or the GoPro. Just don't forget to charge THIS. Buy It Here.
Shitty day bag- Lumping this in here with electronics- Don’t carry your things around in brand new, electronic manufacturer branded bags. You aren't doing yourself favors by letting everyone know you have a Canon DSLR in a Canon speciality backpack. Bring a cheap day bag or buy a crap looking knockoff while abroad.  Try your best to not advertise how much money is sitting in your backpack.  Also, two straps, so that any would be thiefs can’t simply yank it off a shoulder.  Go look in a dumpster.
Bestek Power Inverter- Yes.  Tim lugged this stupid thing around the world for almost a year, just so we could have it to use for a two week road trip in Europe and then 6 weeks in New Zealand.  He stands by his decision.  We were able to charge a laptop, a drone battery, and two USB devices at the same time.  This thing was built to withstand abuse and we’re still using it in our car back home to run crock pots at football tailgates. Buy It Here.
Travel curling iron- Seemed like a great idea, but never ended up using it. Allison mailed it home after 5 months and never touched it once. Don't Buy One.  Seriously.
