The IBM 5150 is perhaps the most influential computer in history. Launched in 1981 under the name Personal Computer, the PC marked the beginning of an architecture that became the industry standard and brought innovations and features that continue to be present in the computers we use until today.

I need to rant about a comment i discovered underneath a news segment about involuntary commitment for the mentally ill.
Tumblr media
Putting their friend on a 5150 hold isn’t the issue I have with this. If the friend was delusional to the point of attacking people then they needed to be seen, evaluated, and treated by psychiatric professionals. This person didn’t deserve to be attacked and they definitely don’t deserve the trauma that came with it.
But it’s those last two sentences that get to me.
The safety of society is more important than our freedom, really? Does this person realize how fucking dehumanizing that line of thinking is? Are we not part of society? Are we not entitled to freedom like everyone else? Is our safety not a priority too? If all it takes for someone to “live in fear” is a mentally ill person existing then that’s an issue they need to sort out themselves.
I’m mentally ill and I have been placed on 5150 and 5250 hold for being a danger to myself/others. I was involuntarily committed against my will due to psychosis and delusional thinking. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and placed on antipsychotics, and I frequently see a therapist and psychiatrist. And guess what? I’m also one of those “decent, hardworking, and law abiding citizens.” I have a life, I have a job, I have friends and family and aspirations and hobbies and goals. I’m hardly any different from the rest of society because I am part of society. Even if I didn’t have any of those things I’d still be a part of society because that’s how society works.
“I’m sorry you’re sick.” Oh spare us the false pity and be fucking for real. People like this aren’t sorry for us. They’re just sorry they have to share this earth with us. They’d sooner lock us away for good or see us dead than give us a chance at being rehabilitated or recovered.
I would never wish psychosis on anyone but I feel like some people will never realize the extent of their dehumanization of insane people unless they become insane themselves.

Another interesting find in the book of bill...
TW: Mental Health Crisis
Tumblr media
Bill gets sent to Dimension #5150
Tumblr media
Otherwise known as the number for a grippy sock vacation!!!
Jokes aside- 5150 is the number of the section of the Welfare and Institutions Code, which allows an adult who is experiencing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily detained for a 72- hour psychiatric hospitalization when evaluated to be a danger to others or themselves.
Interesting detail lol

Fandom Problem #5150:
i really wish anime fans would stop infantilizing anime creators for having racist depictions. yes, japan is homogenous so they're less likely to see other races. but that DOES NOT mean its ok for them to make caricatures. japan has one of the best education systems in the world, they aren't dumb. they're capable of doing research OR literally just looking up other races. can we stop acting like japanese people just dont know any better?

The IBM Personal Computer, Model 5150, was released as part of the Personal System/2 lineup. It was released in August 1981 and was discontinued in 1987. Sporting an Intel 8088 processor and 16-256 KB of memory, it had two different options for graphics! It’s Monochrome Display Adapter card allowed for high res text, while the Color Graphics Adapter card provided low to medium res colored images.
