Simple. Don’t read fics that don’t have trigger warnings. Don’t watch movies that don’t have a “does the dog die” page. Don’t read books without a comprehensive list of trigger warnings someone else made.

something something this shot, to me, symbolizes the struggles of a figure who plays an important political and/or spiritual role in their time, only to lose their sense of identity and self in the process of becoming this figure. only to have that identity swallowed by this position. walk with me...

see how tiny solas looks, down there in the bottom left corner. so small in this framing, even wielding tons of magic at the center of this epic ritual. and compared to the enormous and towering wolf statue beside him, he's almost difficult to spot.

it reminds me of ameridan, who saved the world only to be forgotten, to be erased from history. only to learn, ages later, that his efforts to save his people failed in the most terrible and final of ways.

it reminds me of the parting wisdom ameridan has for the inquisitor: "take moments of happiness where you can find them. the world will take the rest."

it reminds me of an elven inquisitor whose identity and beliefs are totally overshadowed by the humans' perception of them as 'the herald of andraste'.

the devs were cooking with fire here, pointing out (intentionally or not) how solas is just a tired old elf trying to get (1) plan to turn out as planned, once in his long, long life. a tired old elf long overshadowed by the title of fen'harel.

solas (the lover of wisdom, the clever tongue, the playful flirt) almost entirely swallowed by a figure of myth and legend and divine duty: the 'dread wolf'..............................

The year is 2059. I am about to be publicly executed for slights against the most powerful cultural forces in the land. My fortune, my vision, my legacy have been disbanded and burned to the ground. This is my fate. Perhaps I even deserve it.

After a youth spent listless and forlorn I found my passion in the needle and cloth. Literally in my grandparent's shed I practiced myself from an untrained newbie working odd jobs for Jo-Ann scraps to a dark horse studio rivaling the fashion capitals of Europe and the rest of the world.

America loved my maverick designs, until an aggressive and dedicated media campaign turned them against me. The rest of the world was bemused by me, but couldn't deny the unconventional genius of my designs. I made enemies. I never wanted to, but they'd have it no other way. And now this. Beaten and bruised, forced to my knees in the public square, surrounded by the enigmatic shadow leaders of the most powerful fashion houses in the world.

"Say it," hissed the one in front of me, and slapped me across the face, jolting me out of my foggy state and knocking the trucker hat of heart-wrenching elegance from my head. "Your dignity is ruined, you're career is over, but if you renounce your foolishness we will let you live."

I blearily did my best to make eye contact and responded in a thick drawl. If my dignity was ruined why should I bother hiding it to make an impression any more? "I will not renounce my contributions to the world of high fashion." Through ringing ears I could barely hear the jeers and mockery at the word contributions. "I...will never...apologize for my hot cooter."

you know i think i’ve come to the conclusion that the answer to “but what if a cis woman is traumatized by men/male presenting people/whatever?” irt safe spaces is this: if you can’t be in the same room with someone you assume to be male or a man without feeling triggered, it probably means you have a lot more solo therapy and healing to do before relying on group therapy or other communal healing.

because how do you decide who gets to stay and who gets kicked out based on a cis woman’s trauma response? is it based on appearance? should intersex women with facial hair not be allowed because beards are triggering? should butches and studs not be allowed because masculinity is triggering? should talk broad shouldered trans women who don’t want to voice train not be allowed because low voices are triggering? is it based on identity? should a pre transition trans man who came out two days ago not be allowed because he’s a man? is a nonbinary person with a full beard and deep voice allowed because they are not a man?

because if you base your entire set of rules for who’s not allowed in the safe space on what makes cis women uncomfortable or triggers them, you’ve just made that space unsafe for trans people. and you need to decide if you’re ready to own that.
