Sustainable Bottom Line
84 posts
Traditional business school talk was all about Sustainable Competitive Advantage, which always seemed oxymoronic to me, since we live in closed system (planet's biosphere). How on earth (pun intended) can a model based on perpetual resource battles (competition) be sustainable? Competition, in any form, is, by definition, not a sustainable activity. During my parenting pause in 2010, I earned a certificate in Sustainable Business Development , where I learned about the "Triple Bottom Line", a new way of accounting, also know as TBL or 3BL or even "the Three Ps" and which asks us to measure an entity's success, not only in financial (balance sheet) terms (PROFIT), but also PEOPLE (society at large, local community and everything in between) and PLANET, i.e., environmental impacts. Sustainable Bottom Line is a fusion of the old and new concepts (Sustainable Competitive Advantage/ 3BL), and expresses my deep conviction that we will make the transition, and we will do so by leveraging technology and our existing systems and structures.

E-waste "fastest growing waste stream in world"
Just stumbled across this new company: Blue Oak Resources.  I was instantly reminded of a great conversation I had a couple of years back with John Booth of Carbon3IT, (sustainable IT consultancy) for introducing me to the term "e-waste"... this will be a huge topic in coming years as more companies develop smart approaches to reclaiming the embedded value (pun!) in discarded electronics.
A proper Cradle to Cradle approach would be the real right way forward, where object is designed for efficient post-use recycling.
From the Blue Oaks site:
Today’s technology revolution is changing the way we interact with our world forever. In its wake, a mammoth trail of c.50m tons of electronic waste (“e-waste”) is produced every year. This is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. In the U.S., consumers alone dispose of some 3.2 million tons of e-waste annually; more than 80% ends up in the trash, contributing >70% of all toxic metals in U.S. landfills. Globally, it is estimated that only 13% of e-waste undergoes some form of recycling...

The Third Wave.
In IDC's view of the tech world, in the beginning there were mainframes, then came client-server - now we have been SMACked.
"The third wave is our current era, built around cloud computing, social applications, big data and mobile computing....accelerators include: •The Internet of Things  •Cognitive systems  •Pervasive robotics •3-D printing of all kinds •Natural interfaces •Optimized security technologies and solutions
..IDC predicts...a tenfold increase in the number of solutions that will be available over the next four to five years;  two-thirds of those solutions will likely be industry-specific in their design."    - Full Article: http://www.cmswire.com/cms/information-management/idc-10-predictions-for-emerging-technologies-in-2015-027414.php
So many elements, so many potential unintended impacts! INTEGRATION will be the big challenge, no?

My sister's film. Pretty intense, pretty wow, pretty Sundance (I think).
Brand new film by my 360 degree artist (poet, writer, painter, singer, sculptor, etc!) sister, Darshana:
Tumblr media
Darshana's journey is rooted in being sexually violated at age 12 and it is a real gift how she shares and experiences her own healing through this work, which dares to take her and us to some really deep, dark places with enough naked honesty, intelligence, humor, irony, wisdom and slashes of raw emotion to hold even the busiest viewer's attention, to warrant a trip to a theater...
Put another way, she tells a great story that utterly transcends her personality and yet is comprised of pieces of her raw self served up sushi-style. Ouch and yum.
As some of you know (and even helped get her home!), last year Darshana was stricken with Typhoid in Cambodia and the fact is, she is still in a deep healing process, with gastro side effects from the medicines, parasites and microbes...it's hard for her to take in nutrients; her body cannot handle most foods...that she is prolificly producing art non-stop represents her hope that society will value her contribution and allow her to continue her path.
Darshana is an artist living with dedication to her calling, despite so many challenges, right down to her core health. She's achieved moderate recognition, but she is, still, literally, a Starving Artist.
So, please SHARE IF YOU CARE!

Petition Background
The interest rate on federal subsidized Stafford student loans is set to increase from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. If Congress doesn’t act soon, millions of college students will see their student loan payments jump.
Some argue that it’s too expensive to keep government loans at low interest rates, but the federal government makes low interest loans all the time – just not to everyone. Big banks can borrow money through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%.
The biggest banks in the country – the ones that wrecked our economy and cost millions of Americans their jobs – pay next to nothing on their debt, while students pay nine times as much. That isn’t right.
The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act lets students take advantage of the same low rates offered to banks for one year while Congress finds a fair, long-term solution on student loan interest rates.
Unlike the big banks, students don’t have armies of lobbyists and lawyers. But they do have us. Let’s do what’s right and bank on students.
Take like 15 seconds and put your name on this. There are already more than 300,000 signatures. And as always, thank god for elected officials who proactively do things like this like Elizabeth Warren.

Sharing a favorite poem, Keeping Things Whole, for #worldpoetryday - Great initiative, #UNESCO. #poetry
Keeping Things Whole By Mark Strand In a field I am the absence of field. ... This is always the case. Wherever I am I am what is missing. When I walk I part the air and always the air moves in to fill the spaces where my body’s been. We all have reasons for moving. I move to keep things whole. M(i)Data - OS Platform to control and prioritize the fulfillment of your needs and interests. ;-)
I think any system can work, that is not corrupted. The nature of technology today requires and enables direct citizen participation in every relevant aspect/interest (local, country, regional, global). This can be implemented as an O/S project...is already being done a bit http://respectnetwork.com/2013/03/13/report-on-the-second-personal-cloud-meetup/ , but beware folks like the "Digital Asset Grid" which is SWIFT-sponsored and part of a Bank-as-a-Service approach where they will store all the C-Data ("C" in this case being Consumer, but such a platform can also cover "C for CITIZEN".) if no OS approach, we end up with: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/03/us-education-database-idUSBRE92204W20130303

I'm holding to my early Feb prediction that the next 2 to 3 months would bring perhaps the last great opp to get into precious metals, but revising downward price estimate....from $1550 (I think it was...can't find the FB post...anyone remember?) downwards. If we crash through that, we'll really fall, I think! And I guess we will be at $3000 within the next 18 - 24 months. Or somewhere way up there.
