A similar concept is still working to take hold in schools, instead of me shouting at a student or jumping right to detention, the get sent outside to reflect, and before they reenter we have a serious, calm conversation about the behaviour.

Starting with theur perspective, why were they sent outside? What was happening beforehand that started that behaviour? How were they feeling? How did their behaviour impact others?

Then the teacher comes in with theur perspective, what they saw. How the behaviour made them feel, how it effected the classroom.

Then finally, what measures can we put in place to prevent this behaviour in the future, what can we do instead when these feelings/triggers occur?

It works quite well, but it can take several tries for students who struggle to engage in honest conversations with adults, or understand their own feelings and empathise with others. Still, it's practising those skills and that's important. Even better, it provides an opportunity to discuss what's really bothering them, as changes in behaviour often stems from stressors.

I am exceptionally lucky in that my parents never hit me, grounded me, confiscated my things, banned me from my hobbies or threatened any of these actions to make me behave as a kid. as an adult it has made me realise how very very long a road most people have to traverse before they can take a statement like 'no rule that must be enforced by threat is legitimate' seriously.
