Wicked sides theory

Hi!! Welcome to my presentation where I get crazy over the fact that Elphaba and Glinda stand on each other’s sides.

Disclaimer: I know this is me going nuts and this all sides-thing is probably just random, but let me have this. Also if there are shots from multiple angles I’m counting the main one, the one with the most focus on.

It was pointed out that in the musical Glinda usually stands on the left and Elphaba on the right (like during For Good). We can also see that in the movie: Glinda is usually on the left and Elphaba is on the right. That’s their perfect balance, their dynamic.

But it is a bit more complicated here. They do switch the sides only in scenes where they, as characters, get changed. Where their relationship radically changes. Don’t worry you’ll see what I mean by this.

Let’s start with their meet. Their sides are switched - Elphaba is standing on the left and Glinda on the right.

It’s because this is a pivotal moment for them - it’s their first meet - moment that changed their lives for good. In this scene they don’t know each other, they don’t know how to react to each other. It’s not Elphaba and Glinda yet. But…

…once their dynamic gets set they get into their places. Glinda’s on the left and Elphaba’s on the right. In this scene they realise what kind of person is standing in front of them. For the first time we can experience their fierce dynamic.

In their dorm of course Glinda has the right side and Elphaba the left one. Their sides.

During majority of What is this feeling they are on their respective sides. Even though they “loathe” each other their relationship is already set.

Ozdust ballroom scene is really interesting. It’s a pivotal moment for their relationship and so is for their character arcs. And because of that during this scenes their sides are reversed. Elphaba on the left and Glinda on the right.

It’s a moment that changes everything. It’s like they meet for the first time again - they thought they already knew each other yet in this scene they realise they actually don’t know the person opposite them that much.

At the end of this scene they are back as the dynamic duo - Glinda on the left, Elphaba on the right. But their relationship is now changed for good.

They now stay on their sides for most of the time. Like during popular - Glinda is running around like an excited puppy, doing twirls or that laying-on-the-ground-swim, but there is one moment where she calms down and the focus is on the two of them as a pair.

And they are on their sides again.

During the arrest of doctor Dillamond we can see that in classes they too sit on their respective sides. I assume they sit like this in other classes as well.

I assume that because of the fact that Glinda wakes up from her poppy sleep she immediately looks to her left. She’s looking for Elphaba, because she’s used to her Elphie there by her side.

Not this time. Glinda’s taken aback, she’s disbalanced, she’s confused. Without the other half of their dynamic duo. In the shot she’s not on her typical left but in the middle. Alone. I think this scene could mirror I’m not that girl reprise scene very well.

During that heartbreaking deleted they share a little talk where Elphaba promises not to leave Glinda behind again they are back on their sides.

They are balanced again.

When Elphaba’s saying goodbye to Glinda in front of the train, Glinda, of course, stands on the left. But their dynamic gets yet again broken by Fiyero who comes between them.

Glinda doesn’t really appreciate this and comes back on Elphaba’s right, in between her and Fiyero.

Funnily enough she’s standing way closer to Elphie than to her own boyfriend.

Glinda’s not willing to let go of Elphie’s right side, because that’s where she belongs. That’s their dynamic duo and Fiyero has no business in there.

Now the scene in the Emerald palace is interesting. They are standing the other way around. The reason is simple- everything changed yet again.

They’ve met the wizard and found out the truth.

It all over again feels like they don’t know each other as well as they thought. Glinda’s shocked and frustrated by Elphaba’s repulsiveness just as Elphaba is by Glinda submission.

But then during Defying Gravity they accepted all the changes and are back in their dynamic position. It looks like they could overcome everything what just happened by being the perfectly balanced duo they’ve always been.

But Glinda doesn’t get on the broom and everything changes yet again. But this time the change is even bigger than before. They go from duo to two separate people who are on their own. Elphaba on the left, Glinda on the right.

They wish each other the best, because they truly deeply love each other but they are not their dynamic duo anymore.

And they stay on their sides like this until the final riff, final look at each other before the years of separation.

Now what’s really interesting that in trailer for Wicked: For Good they are not consistent. They stand sometimes like this, sometimes like that or we get shots from both angles (like the swing scene). But there is one scene where their sides don’t change.

And that is the For Good scene.

And thing is: they are standing on the “wrong” sides! Elphaba on the left, Glinda on the right. And honestly I’m not surprised. If there’s one scene in that movie where they are truly changed, it’s this one. After all they literally sing “I have been changed for good”

I think at the end of this for good scene they will come back to their respective sides. They have been changed. But now they are back together, as strong as they used to be. Back as that dynamic duo that everyone knew was inseparable back at Shiz. They’re back together, hand in hand.

For now.

thinking of elphie sobbing as she hugs glinda for one last time, being wrecked with guilt over what she's done and about to do

everyone talks abt how glinda has regrets because we see her in nomtw and she's objectively in the moral wrong for her complicity in the wizard's regime, but elphie has just as many regrets as glinda in that moment

elphie gave up everything her fight against the wizard. not just her chance at being loved and adored by oz, but her closest relationships. her unwavering sense of justice means she's willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good, even if it means destroying her friendship with glinda

but in the end, where does that get her? nessa's dead, fiyero's "dead," and pre-kiamo ko her relationship with glinda all but collapses in on itself like a dying star. she's changed so much; she hardly recognizes herself anymore. there's a crying child in her basement she's threatened to murder. a mob is coming to fucking kill her and there's nothing she can do to stop it

and here's glinda, who despite everything still went to kiamo ko to extend one last olive branch, even after elphie left her, even after elphie stole her fiancé, even after elphie proved that she really is just as wicked as everyone thinks she is, begging elphie to let her stand beside her and clear her name

but elphie knows it's too late, and after everything that's happened, everything she's lost, she can't lose glinda anymore than she already has. elphie only breaks everything she loved and cared about, and she's already hurt glinda enough

so they're sharing one last hug and all elphie can think about is how much she loves glinda, how badly she wants to be with her, how if she only listened to her one of those times maybe things could've been different
