today the confederate flag came down in south carolina. i watched as it came down, and the crowd chanted USA. i found myself weeping- mourning all whose lives were harassed, beaten, & murdered all in the name of racism & ignorance. all the struggles that have, & will continue to be fought for basic human rights. it's not fair, just, or equal yet, & it often feels like we will never get there. sometimes progress moves too slowly to feel grateful.

“…I think that sometimes we become lethargic out of fear. It’s not really laziness so much as it is timidity. We’d rather bear the ills we have than fly to others that we know not of, when in truth the place where one is standing may be untenable, it may be dangerous, it may be stultifying, and it’s better to just step on. You know, you have to move…” Maya Angelou

Here’s the truth: friendships between women are often the deepest and most profound love stories, but they are often discussed as if they are ancillary, “bonus” relationships to the truly important ones. Women’s friendships outlast jobs, parents, husbands, boyfriends, lovers, and sometimes children…it’s possible to transcend the limits of your skin in a friendship… This kind of friendship is not a frivolous connection, a supplementary relationship to the ones we’re taught and told are primary – spouses, children, parents. It is love… Support, salvation, transformation, life: this is what women give to one another when they are true friends, soul friends.

We have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifices. Capitalism was built on the exploitation of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor, both black and white, both here and abroad.

The right wing wants more guns and more conflicts. This disconnect between guns and violence is where the gun lobbyists fester.
