oh hey there. it's been a minute. actually, it's been 60 minutes and 54 seconds.

i started making this into a cassette mixtape with 2 sides and, well, nobody listens to tapes anymore or owns a boombox. very sad. but i want people to listen to this so here is an accurate tone poem representing some sort of start and stop of a thing that happened in time.

suicide notes: 1. this is the intro track to map of the soul which, in context of the mix, was always masquerading as something else. lupe shines but i do miss the old kanye 2. me i'm a creator 3. fuck keith sweat, i'm thom yorke. CRASHprez is the right amount of corny and futuristic 4. this is art for change 5. chance the rapper released this summer of 2018 with three other surprise songs. this was obviously my favorite and my soundtrack going into lesley 6. you can't be me i'm a rockstar 7. i saw minus the bear's final show ever in boston my first semester of grad school. top 5 best shows ever. so intimate, so honest. and if you listen to the words, this entire song is about being a therapist 8. not gonna lie, this was not the cover version i was looking for but it fits the musical mood better. her name is sara diamond and the chord substitution that happens in the chorus is worth the trade-off from both lissie and kudi 9. but i couldn't not have kudi's voice completely taken away. my sleep cycle is all fucked up because of grad school 10. could it be the sound of liberation? i sure fucking hope so or else what the hell did i just do for the last three years 11. max probably does jaydiohead better than anyone else including me. i found this on vinyl at reggie's with eddi which i cannot wait to visit again in july 12. this band was the background to a loooooot of reading. strawberry girls is in my life for a very weird reason but i'm happy about it 13. i don't think y'all ready for the revolution ya shit is pollution! 14. i discovered that all my mixes have some sort of element of fire, burning, arson, destruction, etc. why stop now 15. YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS. love is not just a verb it’s you lookin in the mirror. this would be my favorite kendrick song of all time if drake didn’t poison it with his whack ass bars 16. i guess this whole time i’ve been trying to morph the function of music and lyrics to the point of manipulating human reaction and outcome. yeah, that’s what music therapy is 17. look around you, you’re surrounded. fun facts: it’s perfect in terms of length, numerical values, and patterns. i still am superstitious with numbers i guess. it’s mostly irrational, but so is life. that’s where we’re landing i guess.

fun facts: these are some of my favourite songs and i just wanted to share them with you. the story matters, i think: love in a micro- and macro- level. still learning the balance. still learning every day, but confident it’ll outlast the oceans. or at least respect them.

suicide notes: 1. today, we escape 2. you can be janet and i’ll be j.cole, though in the context of this song, we’re the other way around 3. don’t sleep when you know you got a good girl 4. i really like all the synth parts to this song 5. when you see this episode of how i met your mother, you’ll get it 6. dat bass line tickles me 7. ...this’ll make your veg ass want meat 8. this song is about neither of us 9. somewhere in life, there is a video of me playing this song with matt santos’ puerto rican cuatro in a st. mark’s brooklyn bathroom 10. the smooth criminal on beat breaks 11. i had THE biggest crush on her growing up 12. least listened to song on album, most relevant to this mix 13. one day, i will play this song in california 14. hide your lovers underneath the covers. fun facts: this is not mixed well; the cymbals sound terrible and the bass is too bassy. but i had a lot of fun with the leitmotif of this one. i’m sure you got it already. version 3.1 started with “no sleep til brooklyn,” but that was too obvious.

suicide notes: 1. what this song is about is not what i feel when i listen to it. look up: miracle legion, all for the best 2. no one says it better than the KING himself 3. this is one of those bands that i listened to until 2009 and never again 4. don’t listen to this band anymore either, but the words are coming out of me like surprise vomit 5. you just don’t put this on a mix for a friend. you just don’t 6. i know my heart, i know it’s careless. but darling, you seem like you’re fearless 7. even if her plane crashes tonight, she’ll find a way to disappoint me!! 8. this album came out in 1999 9. current me wants to travel back in time to twenty-three-year-old me the moment i decided to put this on and give me a hug and tell me that i will be okay 10. arguably the best song on pinkerton, but not my fave 11. sinking, and there are bubbles above me. fun facts: in 2009 i played track 5 at queer noise open mic with a ukulele and cameron esposito called me a charmer. the entirety ebbs and flows and ends rather ambiguously for a mix so intentional. or that is meant for someone else. perhaps i struck a match and decided it was too windy to catch on fire while i watched it burn to flames on the ground. six years later... embers.

suicide notes: 1. i will actively seek these guys out the next time i’m in new york city 2. if it did, it would come faster 3. this is the best one 4. this is the steel train version from their album “1969,” in which they covered songs from 1969. i always found it fascinating, the reason why the original version cuts out the way it does. that lingering, longing lust... 5. this is the trick, forget a terrible year, and we can break the rules until it gets weird 6. the hood internet makes me miss chicago 7. this song came on my 2001 hip hop mixtape and i knew i had to resurrect it 8. i wanna be kendrick lamar when i grow up 9. the world was on fire and nobody could save me but you 10. and to think they said we’d never make anything better than this 11. i am such a tease and you’re such a flirt 12. in the sixteen years of making mixes, i’ve never put this song on any of them 13. i still love maura davis. i wonder what she’s doing nowadays 14. all of my dreams are of you. fun facts: i wanted the original version of track 7, but timbaland obviously runs the show. three tracks with his production. version 2.1 had the tune-yards and lenny kravitz... maybe next time.
