In March 2021 hunters in Wisconsin killed more than 200 wolves as they scrambled to take it advantage of wildlife rules that they worried might be tightened by the Biden administration. At least 216 wolves were killed in less than 60 hours prompting Wisconsin to end what was meant to be a one week hunt four days early according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Environmentalists, who fought unsuccessfully in state court to stop the hunt, said the killings had occurred during breeding season, when gray wolves are especially vulnerable. They said the large number of wolves killed in such a short time underscored the need to put the gray wolves back on the list of animals protected under the Endangered Species Act. As of today the gray wolf has yet to be added to the list of animals protected under the Endangered Species Act and now with Idaho’s wolf hunting laws that went into effect on July 1 and Montana’s that will go into effect on October 1 wolves are endangered and in danger more than ever. Why would state laws in Montana support a wolf bounty? Why would we create a system for killing wildlife that would not have a limit? So for every other animal we set limits; time limits, quantity limits, gender limits, size limits, location limits, and closely monitor the hunt but for the animal that actually balances the ecosystem and makes the forest healthy we enact a kill order. Are we really that shortsighted? The blood thirst surrounding the wolfhound must be driven by something other than science it has to be emotional. From what I’ve seen on the ground it is an ancient myth wrapped up in stereotypes and supported by the need to trophy hunt. This barbaric and backward way of thinking will ruin the land for generations to come. We are slowly causing the collapse of our wild spaces in this country that support us. Choose to take action! Stripping Wolves of protection has put our ecosystem on the edge of collapse. It seems that we are unwilling to realize that the only thing providing us a balanced ecosystem and therefore air, clean water, and a living ecosystem is because of the wolf. As some of you may know Idaho passed a bill allowing hunters and trappers to kill an unlimited number of wolves to lessen the states wolf population by 90 % so in response the Center for Biological Diversity has asked US Fish and Wildlife Service to disqualify Idaho from receiving federal funding for wildlife management. The new bill passed by Idaho allows hunters and trappers kill an unlimited number of wolves, run down the animals with ATVs and snowmobiles, and track them all year on private land. Under the Pittman-Robertson act, a state may be deemed ineligible to receive federal funding for wildlife management and outdoor recreation projects if it passes legislation contrary to the act. Even Idaho’s Department of Fish and game opposed the bill, which now awaits the governor signature. The Idaho Senate last Wednesday approved legislation allowing the state to hire private contractors to kill up to 90% of the wolves roaming Idaho. The agriculture industry backed bill approved last Wednesday on 26 to 7 vote includes additional changes intended to cut the wolf population from about 1500 to 150. A primary change in the new law is the hiring of private contractors to kill up to 90% of the wolves roaming Idaho. The board ,created in 2014 ,is an agency within the governors office that manages state money it receives to kill wolves. Other changes in the legislation include removing any limits on the number of wolf tags issued to a hunter, meaning there would be no restriction on how many wolves one person is allowed to kill. Wolf trapping would be allowed year-round on private land .The legislation makes changes to allow hunting wolves with ATVs and snowmobiles and other methods allowed for animals classified as predators,such as coyotes. Also, state agencies outside of Idaho would be allowed to kill wolves in Idaho. “The Idaho Senate sudden move to pass this bill in the 11th hour incentivizes the cruel deaths of more than 1,000 wolves across the state” said Andrea Zaccardi, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. “The consequences of this bill will be horrendous. The more we observe wolves the more we learn about who they really are. For years I heard about the Alpha Male and the Big Bad Wolf but what I have observed and what has been proven lately by scientists is that the Alpha Female chooses the male and thereby defines the pack. The Alpha Female also defines roles to the supporting wolf family members and is the glue that holds the whole thing together. This is why un-managed and poorly monitored wolf population control by blood thirsty hunters could end wolves in North America. If the wrong female fall the entire pack will fail.
