ToK Essay Title Nov 2020 Title 2: Understanding, âwhat ifâŚ?â and knowledge.
Clarifying the terms of the Q: If thereâs a gap between what we know and what we can understand, are âwhat ifâŚ?â questions the only way to bridge the gap? In a narrow definition, such questions are hypothetical or conditional. We are asking someone to imagine, to speculate, perhaps even to âthink outside of the boxâ as a way of making sense of knowledge. For example, as an exercise in thinking through the historical consequences of the US Black Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, we might ask âWhat if Martin Luther King Jr had not been assassinated?ââŚ
Developing the Q: Earlier, it was indicated that the hypothetical nature of âwhat ifâŚ?â questions could be thought of in very general terms in relation to the process of modelling, since they both engage the knower in thinking about the future. A model is a simplified representation of the world and can be in the form of a physical two or three dimensional depiction of an aspect of the material world. Models can thus be symbolic, descriptive, illustrative, ideal or even generalisedâŚ
Knowledge Questions: To what extent is imagination (substitute any other WOK here) important in helping us to make sense of the world? How far is it true to say that there are some aspects of the world that defy understanding?
Perspectives
Arts: George Orwellâs allegorical Animal Farm is a hypothetical in its broadest sense of being a projection of what could happen to a society, if power goes unchecked. It works on two levels. On the surface, it is a story about strange events involving farm animals in a fictional corner of the UK. At the same time, the story is a satirical comment on the inherently corrupt nature of powerâŚ

ToK Essay Nov 2020 Title 3: Centrality of humans in knowledge production & acquisition.
Clarifying the terms of the Q: âŚHowever, letâs take time to admit that human beings simply are and will continue to be the center of the âknowledge universeâ. At least until an extra-terrestrial species of knower comes along to prove otherwise. Of course, it hasnât always been like this. In the short history of human civilisation, humans have been marginal in the knowledge universe. In western Europe, for example, right up until the beginning of the Eighteenth Century, a Christian God was thought to be âthe most importantâŚ
Developing the Q: Implicit also in this question is a related problem: the need to explore the relationship between âthe knowerâs perspectiveâ and âknowers perspectivesâ. A knowerâs perspective is essential in the construction of personal knowledge and âknowersâ perspectivesâ are essential to the building of shared knowledge. This distinction represents the I and the We of knowledge production/acquisition and should reinforce your grasp of how the to bridge the gap between the production of personal and shared knowledgeâŚ
Knowledge Questions: What undermines confidence or trust in knowledge that revolves around humans? How can we minimise our sense of self-importance when acquiring knowledge?
Perspectives
History: The past is uniformly dead to us and exists only in the form of primary sources or physical remnants of the past like living eye witnesses, first person documents and relics. The past also exists in the form of secondary sources based on other historiansâ works, art and architecture. This means, on the one hand, that a historianâs reconstructions, unlike a scientistâs, canât be tested against historical reality as it doesnât really exist anymoreâŚ

ToK Essay Nov 2020 Title 6: Knowledge, reliability and uncertainty
Clarifying the terms of the Q: At this point, we should see that at least some reliable knowledge deals in uncertainty, ambiguity and is open to interpretation. Part of your response could explore how knowledge is actually established. Different AOKs use different methods to build knowledge. The importance of these methods should not be overestimated because they help to justify the truth of knowledge, making it more or less reliableâŚ
Developing the Q: On a historical level, the Q implies that the uncertainty in our knowledge of the past or historical truth is dependent on human minds; that knowledge comes from an interaction between human minds and the world through various WOKs. If I see patterns in the plenitude of individual facts which constitute my theory about the past and you donât see the same pattern, does it follow that you know the past differentlyâŚ
Knowledge Questions: Is scientific knowledge more ambiguous than religious knowledge? What makes any knowledge reliable? Why is certainty so important?
Perspectives
Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Ultimately, indigenous knowledge is reliable as a force for survival. The oral tradition yields collective knowledge of what sort of plants are healing, where to find the best watering holes and when winter storms are coming. And yet such knowledge which was once so reliable can at the same time lack certainty when confronted by a changing natural and social environmentâŚ

new year
thereâs only 2 hours of 2017 left where i live
some say a new year is a new me
others say a new year is a fresh start
people some make new yearâs resolution
but often give up after a while
iâm just terrified
will 2018 be worse than 2017?
what would happen in 2018?
uncertainty is something i hate the most
but youâll never know until you find outÂ
so goodbye 2017
and hello 2018
please be good to me

exams
you know,Â
this is something i have never told anyone
and this is something probably no one will know until iâm gone
the day after my major exam
i went out with a friend
we watched a movie
it was nice
when i came home
i started to cry
the paper was hard
âitâs just an examâ some might say
but that meant the world to me
studying that same subject since primary one
and having to let go of it after 9 years of hard work
just because i didnât get the results to allow me to qualify to study that subject next year
i no longer have an edge to get into the school i want
so i thought to myself
should i just leave?
having something taken away from you can be so painful
if i was gone, i wouldnât even have to worry about next year.
i prayed and am still praying everyday
pleading to God to give me a miracle
but also treating everyday like it was my last
in about 2 weeks we shall see
where i will be

last
the thought of 2018 scares me
with every passing year a whole string of worries will unravel
school is starting
results will be released
will 2017 be my last?
