Me one month ago, with extreme self assurance: The number one most important thing Ted Lasso has done for me is canonise Pep for realsies. The implications about Jamie's time at City under Pep are fundamental to his entire arc and here's why. Also, cuddles. I bet we get a cameo at the Etihad match.

The #1 most important thing to me about that episode is the true canonisation of real actual Pep Guardiola (not a fake person also called Pep) as Man City's coach, and the HUGE amount of impact that has on Jamie, as a footballer and as a person. The show is going beyond my wildest dreams in terms of canonising his impact on Jamie and proving that he's had excellent positive male figures in his life before Ted. Because being coached by Pep matters so much!

It wasn't that brief, either, Beard - it's depending on when Jamie was finally called up to the first team, but Pep's been there since 2016. The fact that Jamie went from Pep (a genius, praise-heavy, affectionate, passionate coach who does not tolerate ANY ego, and rotates his starting line ups and positions constantly, and, oh yeah, plays a version of total football) to George Cartrick (horrible toxic man reminiscent of Jamie's father who put Jamie as a one up front striker when he wouldn't have been trained like that at City whatsoever, and then tried to use his Guardiola-trained wunderkind to lazily coast, and the team wasn't even winning) explains so much about Jamie's attitude after 6 months at Richmond when we meet him in season 1.

Jamie would not have been "a prick" at Man City or shown individual ego or selfishness on the pitch or in the dressing room. He absolutely would never have gotten away with it. Pep would not allow it. Jamie would have been a little fish in a big pond, a young player trying to earn his place, probably trying to be an extremely good boy at training while also having to deal with his dad's outside (and incorrect) criticism about "dominating." Going from Pep to George is a travesty for Jamie. And then in comes Ted, who has zero tactical intelligence, is blase about understanding the sport, and never gives the players any hugs? Yeah, Jamie was on the brink of losing it and I get why. Honestly, even just the impact of losing Pep levels of male physical affection and positive reinforcement would have been a huge impact on him.

But now! Jamie's refusal to shit talk City when all the others were! His visible frustration the whole week! "I'm not doing it wrong! You're doing it wrong!" His football intelligence when he finally feels allowed to speak up, actually take command of the tactics and set the tempo of the game! That's Guardiola ball, baby! He knows! He fucking knows because he is the successor to the Cruyff-Pep legacy and at his core, a brilliant midfield playmaker! Yeah, yeah, the Lasso Way, I know, but for real, if Richmond win the league it's largely going to be because Jamie Tartt was trained by Pep Guardiola.

Do the cuddling/ touch starved thing next, show. It's extremely important.

‘Ted Lasso’ season 3, episode 10 in conversation: Football isn’t just a game

In Ted Lasso season 3, episode 10, a handful of Greyhounds travel to represent their countries in international matches, Roy receives two very different and very important shirts, neither of them dark heather charcoal, and Rebecca rescues English football from the clutches of another Super League Attempter. It really does seem like THIS is the thing that Roy is learning from Jamie - how to open his heart and how to want things or feel he deserves things. Because Jamie is so fucking open about how he feels and what he wants. Roy has had a weird year, he’s had to confront those feelings about Chelsea – and at the time I said like “Now I don’t want people to only use this as a metaphor for Keeley!” but it definitely also was one, hence me thinking he knew what was up. Roy has been clearly struggling in his day to day at work, if Rebecca gave him that bollocking. He’s been putting all this effort in with Jamie, but honestly, it feels like what’s happened, whether he realises it or not, is that he’s letting himself be loved by Jamie. The impact of someone being like “You’re so good, you have so much to give, I’m so grateful for you, I love spending time with you,” on and on and on. Jamie’s open heartedness has to be the thing that’s impacted him and changed him, because Ted Lasso season 3 does not actually show us anything else that has impacted him or changed him. His whole plot has been increasing levels of attention paid to Jamie. Like, if there’s something else that is meant to have made him gradually change how he acts and sees himself, point it out to me. Because it isn’t Phoebe – he’s always good with Phoebe, but it isn’t something changing with her, and Leann says, it’s not the shirt (a Phoebe metaphor) – it’s you. I think it is absolutely fundamental to Roy’s change of heart that he has properly accepted Jamie’s affection for him. That had to happen before he could move forward, rather than keeping on pretending it wasn’t important.

I love all the implications of Jamie getting Roy the KUNT shirt. Because there’s so much to unpack here

Phoebe reached out to Jamie, and obviously her mum was in on it. They’ve clearly met before! He held Phoebe’s hand and didn’t introduce himself to Roy’s sister. They know him!

Jamie was away training with the England national team. That’s two hours outside of London. He had to take the afternoon off (from England training camp! decked in his England gear) to go to Phoebe’s party.

Lassoverse Gareth Southgate was in on it. He would have needed to get permission to leave! (Or he snuck out, but S3 Jamie wouldn’t). I bet he had to explain why.

When Jamie says “I got them to change the E to a U.” This wasn’t a DIY gift. He got the national team equipment people to make him a version of the 2014 wc kit with Roy’s number that says KUNT on it. NO WAY it would’ve stayed a secret.

In conclusion: the entire England national team knows about the ROY KUNT shirt and they were absolutely completely totally on board. They also all know about Jamie’s big crush
