I one hundred percent believe Prince Philip died yesterday but the royal family didn't want to give us the satisfaction of having his and Margaret Thatcher's deaths on the same day
I keep having variations of this conversation lately but I guess it’s time again. I am noticing an unfortunate objection to John and Zari’s relationship on Legends. It’s not ‘they have nothing or common’ or ‘I don’t like the way they wrote it’ or even ‘I prefer another ship’ (which are all perfectly valid), but rather ‘I don’t think Constantine is a one woman kind of man’. And that is really disheartening to see.
Look, I’m not coming from any kind of shipping angle. I don’t care what you do and don’t ship, I’m talking about representation. I keep harping on this, but Constantine has existed for over 30 years and in all that time, he’s had no history of being disloyal to his partners. So, why are people acting like he is?
There are two things happening here. Fans are either projecting a harmful biphobic stereotype to the character to justify their dislike for the ship, or the show’s writing itself is giving them a reason to feel like that statement actually reflects John’s character. Both options are bad, and frankly both options are true.
It’s awesome that John’s bisexuality has been explicitly explored in recent years across all media (TV, comics, animation). But it’s also come with an increase of these types of comments. And that’s not a coincidence.
Biphobia isn’t just the neckbeard comic bros complaining whenever someone acknowledges John’s attraction to men. It’s also when you act like he’s incapable of being loyal or having actual feelings that go beyond ‘I’m horny’.
While John’s case specifically extends beyond Legends, there’s a lot of unchecked biphobia (and panphobia) in the Legends fandom that goes way beyond this John issue. And I’m tired of pretending like I don’t see it, specifically cause some of it comes from the way the bi and pan characters are written.
I don’t even know where I’m going with this. It’s Pride and I’m tired ya’ll.
