The Barbados Group - Think Tank Changing the Performance Paradigm
A graduate of the University of Chicago with a master of arts in philosophy, Steve Zaffron eventually went on to become a senior program leader and executive at Werner Erhard and Associates. After leaving the firm, he founded the Vanto Group in San Francisco and served as CEO for 24 years. He remains with the Vanto Group as senior program leader and designer, having handed over his CEO responsibilities to Olga Loffredi. In his free time, Steve Zaffron participates in a number of organizations, including the Barbados Group. A think tank consisting of scholars, practitioners, and consultants brought together by Werner Erhard, the Barbados Group seeks to develop a new performance paradigm called "The Ontological Foundations of Performance." The group believes that performance at the individual or organizational level is related to the way in which the world occurs for that person or organization. A unique facet of language used by the group helps people access that “occurring” with the goal of transforming performance. The Barbados Group’s membership includes a number of academics and prominent thinkers, including Sir Christopher Ball, a patron of the Talent Foundation; Bruce Gergory, senior science educator at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; Michael C. Jensen, Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School; and David C. Logan of the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. As a result of the Barbados Group’s work, Steve Zaffron and David C. Logan published a 2009 book titled, Three Laws of Performance, which gives readers the opportunity to delve further into discussions on ontology and performance.

Basic Windsurfing Safety
Tumblr media
A senior program leader and an expert in organizational leadership, Steve Zaffron has worked with international companies that range from Walgreens to Reebok. Since the early 1990s, he has held a number of management roles as the founder of San Francisco’s Vanto Group. In his free time, Steve Zaffron enjoys engaging in outdoor activities such as windsurfing. Whether one is an experienced windsurfer or an absolute beginner, safety must be of paramount concern. Windsurfing is a possibly dangerous sport that takes place in a potentially hostile environment, so wise windsurfers take appropriate precautions to ensure that they will ultimately return to shore. First and foremost, windsurfers should always hit the water with a partner to provide assistance in times of need. Secondly, thorough equipment inspection is absolutely essential. All windsurfing components, from the board and sail to various outhaul and downhaul ropes, should be free from damage and significant wear. Windsurfers also should use helmets, life jackets, and other essential safety gear according to manufacturers’ recommendations. Windsurfers must pay close attention to the general windsurfing environment, avoiding dangerous weather conditions such as rainstorms and offshore winds. Experts also strongly discourage windsurfing at night or in areas without adequate emergency services
