essie is basically a cat in human form in that she just. lies on everything. is there a sunny spot of carpet?? claimed. is skylar trying to create some powerful and/or dangerous charm magic?? nope she’s fallen asleep while dramatically laying across his lap. is stella trying to hit something with her sword?? not while her girlfriend needs attention and a lazy hug

okay but i love that feeling when you have a character to name and you have a name in mind that you really like...so you go look it up and the symbolism and shit perfectly represents them

so i felt like talking a bit about the gals™
cerys is sort of the de facto ‘leader’ of the group, given that she’s pretty image obsessed. she likes to be the face of things. the others mock her a bit for her interests in stuff like makeup and fashion (which she’s very talented at) for being useless or feminine, so she claims to only use it to boost her image. she likes writing, but she’s far too embarrassed to show anyone.
ada’s the nerdy one. ever since she was small she’s been the ‘smart’ one, and lives up to this reputation today (at the cost of her mental health). despite doing incredibly difficult subjects and several extracurriculars, her grades have been slipping throughout her senior years, worsening her anxiety and pushing her to cope with parties and drinking. she has a massive crush on cerys, but is far too shy to say anything.
keira claims to be the responsible one, but she really isn’t. she doesn’t really have a set ‘thing’ like the others, but drifts between whatever catches her fancy at the time. she learns quickly and is generally very clever, but doesn’t do all the well in school when it doesn’t interest her. she’s often the one that encourages her friends to do stupid shit and films it for snapchat or whatever.
lina is on the school’s football team, and is the loose cannon. she has a tendency to start fights or make stupid bets and the like, especially when she’s drunk. she’s the one you see at every party. despite having a few mates on her team, the only people she really talks to are these girls. she struggles with a lot of intrusive thoughts and unchecked depression, but rejects going to therapy.

me, sitting cross-legged in your fridge when you go for a drink in the middle of the night: gray morality can be an effective storytelling technique but it should not be considered a necessity in order to tell a good story because when handled wrong it carries the implication that atrocities are justifiable as long as they're committed in the interest of fulfilling an ostensibly noble goal, and it is so often handled wrong
you, staring in horror while holding a carton of orange juice: who are you and how did you get in my house

so i made playlists for stella/essie and lina/skylar and jesus christ they’re stupid
stella and essie’s is like every gay song under the planet (theyre relatable okay) and those guitar love songs from the mid 2000s and lina and skylar’s is a mixture of lana del rey, shitty pop songs and good charlotte

#squad, chessboard, track and field and compass for the group
#squad: who’s friends with who? what are the squad dynamics like?
the squad is made up of stella, lina, skylar and essie, but they all have very different dynamics in the ways that they split off into pairs.
the first of these configurations is stella and lina/skylar and essie, which is basically the ‘old friends’ combo. stella and lina are friends from high school and pretty much platonic soulmates, although they struggle to rein in each other’s unhealthy behaviour. skylar and essie have a much more honest and vitriolic friendship, although it’s no less strong. they consider each other sibs from different cribs lol
next up is stella and essie, who go from awkward and blushy workmates to full on gay and its great. they start off as that girl friend that you’re on the same joke wavelength as and you spill all your feelings to and want to be with all the time until you realise you’re in love. skylar and lina are stuck together bc of this development, as well as other plot reasons. they fight and cry a lot, then throw lasers at things.
finally is the configerations that they usually get into when actually working, which are stella and skylar/lina and essie. lina and essie are pretty chill with each other, they’re not the type to get into deep conversations with each other outside of skating the vague, but up for a laugh (especially at the others’ expense). stella and skylar, on the other hand, genuinely dislike each other and fight a lot. their disagreements usually stem from their respective moral attitudes - in which stella is much more ‘traditionally’ heroic, purposefully avoiding any potential collateral damage at the risk of screwing over their goal, whereas skylar is more likely to throw a few people under the bus to help more people. while they have agreements about who’s in charge of what and when, they often fight over each other’s decisions and life outlook tbh. their disdain for each others’ attitudes combined with the insecurity of someone heavily question one’s life outlook ruins any possible positive relationship the two could have. they do put effort into trying to collaborate, but this just tends to result in more explosive fights between them.
this was long but it had to be
chess board: who is the most logical? or the schemer/planner?
hhhhhhhhh the schemer/planner role plays hot potato between skylar and stella. they’re lowkey the ‘leaders’ by virtue of three facts:
they would probs both have an aneurism if they weren’t controlling every little thing
essie refuses to be in charge of any of this shit on principle
lina would drive this team into the ground and they all know it
who does what is usually decided by what they’re doing. if it involves direct magic work, it’s skylar because he knows more about magic and is better able to control it. otherwise it’s stella because her plans are generally more sound and she can direct from the field. they usually respect these leadership boundaries, although they often fight over how they do things. skylar has the more logical approach, while stella’s is often balancing risk and reward
track & field: which (if any) of your OCs are athletic? what sports to they play? which of your OCs would go HARD in P.E.?
while they’re all pretty fit to some extent, the girls are generally fitter. lina is probably the most blatantly athletic, being a footy player and in surf club and all that (and also being a typical jock lololol). essie has her dance and cheerleading which makes her pretty strong and very good with teamwork. stella doesn’t really stick to a sport, although she runs a lot and works out to stay fit and strong. stella has played a number of sports over the years, including lacrosse, basketball, cricket, softball and rugby (that last one was with lina, in which she got totally smashed).
compass: who’s the moral compass? in general: what are your OCs’ morality like? do they have high morals, or not? are their morals self imposed, or do they base their morals on religion/family/influence of others?
they all kinda operate on their own systems of morality:
stella has the most traditionally good vs evil morality standpoint. because she aspires to heroics so much, her largely self-imposed moral code is extremely important to her (even in everyday life) and something that she applies to others. however, her views can sometimes be black and white and can cause her to lose sight of her goals - fulfilling the moral quandary in the short run, but this costing the overall victory.
skylar, being the other team leader, tends to come into conflict with stella’s moral code a lot. his attitude often dips into end-justifies-the-means, and sometimes he does kinda dickish stuff in the aim of the greater good. he does feel remorse when he genuinely fucks up, but hey sometimes being sorry doesn’t undo stuff yknow? he and stella fight about who’s being a better person a lot
lina bases her business around self-preservation. her innately paranoid nature makes it difficult for her to be the typical, selfless, all-sharing hero that she doesn’t want to admit she wants to be. she looks up to people like stella and her mother who she considers ‘heroic’, but doesn’t dare try to categorise herself with them. in lieu of that, she tries to do what benefits others but is too afraid to actually put herself out there and make a change
essie probably has the least extreme outlook of any of them. despite her bubbly personality, morally essie can be quite cynical - she recognises that there are a lot of problems in institutions and the like but doesn’t think that she as an individual can change that, so why bother? she heavily priorities her friends and family over others or a movement, which sets her apart from some of the others
basically stella and skylar are the extremes of black and white morality vs ends justify the means while lina and essie don’t believe their actions make that much of a difference, and thus don’t bother pushing themselves to a moral extreme
