 Shadow draped a blanket over his new friend’s shoulders.

 “Goodnight, Crimson...” He said softly. He tiptoed back to his room, turning off the lights as he went.

 As soon as the door was shut, however, he threw himself onto his bed and groaned into his pillow.

 “Why do all my friends want to fight me!?” He cried.

 After a few minutes, he turned over to stare up at the ceiling. The thought of tomorrow made him anxious at best. Shard was tough. Really tough. And fast, too. Not to mention that he was very skilled in the arts of magic. In short, Shadow didn’t stand a ghost of a chance. He sighed.

   What kind of third-rate hero can’t even defend his friend?

Just a heads-up.

On Thursday, Kirby: Planet Robobot will be released in Japan. I have a feeling that more than a few people might have bought Japanese copies of the game and will probably talk about it in gratuitous detail. Untagged. In the main tag.

So, please, if you want to talk about what happens in the game, please tag your posts with something like “kirby planet robobot spoilers” so that the game doesn’t get spoiled for people.

 “Oh...?” Shadow turned. Another him? It wasn’t at all strange here. He squeezed his basket full of apples.

 “Sorry, this isn’t Rainbow Route. This is Floralia.”

Heroes of Mirrors

[starter for stardust-reflections​]

Shadow Kirby always enjoyed wandering around the woods of Rainbow Route. However, today’s adventure brought him to a rather strange part of the forest. Something here seemed… Off. It almost gave him the feeling that he should know where he was, but the area was completely unfamiliar.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted someone else– oh, good! Maybe they’d be able to help him! He waved and hurried over to the stranger, not caring too much about how much they looked like him. There were plenty of dark grey puffs in the land, after all, right?

“Ah, hey there!” Kirby greeted the stranger. “Would you mind telling me what part of Rainbow Route this is?”

 Shadow smiled.

 “You’re very welcome,” He said softly. “You can sleep in my room if you like. It’ll be safer to go in the morning. He seems to attack less in the daylight.” He slipped out of the armchair.

 “I’m happy I met you today.”

((Hey! I understand that Kirby robobot is really exciting, but if you’ve already played the japanese version please don’t spoil it for me!))

 Shadow looked up. Crimson’s warm smile seemed to lift his mood a little. He hadn’t realized how truly lonely he had been until now. Having someone to keep him company was a wonderful feeling. He gave a weak smile.

 “Th-thank you.” He sniffled. “You’re very kind.”

 “I used to be, yes. But... He changed. a lot.” Shadow said softly.

 “...When I first moved to Fine Fields, he helped me adjust. But that was when he still called himself Taranza.” He said softly. He set a tray bearing pastries on the table.

 “He served under the Queen then. They were very good friends until...” He swallowed.

 “One day, she asked him to bring her something. A magical golden mirror that acted as a doorway to other worlds.” He said. He poured a bit of tea into two mugs and handed one to his guest.

 “He did exactly as told, and as thanks she stabbed him and left him to bleed out. Using the mirror, she crossed over to Dreamland and attempted to conquer it. It was only when the King brought her mistakes to attention did she realize what she did was wrong. She retreated back through the mirror and healed Taranza’s wounds. She swore that she would never do such a thing again. She changed back into the benevolent monarch she used to be, and everyone was happy...” He sighed.

 “Everyone but Taranza.”

 He took a deep sip of his tea, but his throat still felt dry.

 “He was furious. He felt that justice wasn’t being served, and decided to take matters into his own hands. He met with Sectonia one night. She tried to ask for his forgiveness, but he wouldn’t have any of it. So he...” Shadow swallowed. Something wet and warm ran down his cheek.

 “I saw him that night. He was hunched over her corpse l-like an animal. The warmth I saw in his eyes had disappeared completely. My friend had died along with the queen.” He sniffed and wiped his eyes.

 “He was run out of Royal Road after that. He stole the mirror and hid it deep in the woods. Anyone unfortunate enough to get lost in the forest is devoured without mercy. I’ve seen what he can do. It’s-It’s awful!” His hands shook.

 “I tried to talk some sense into him, but he just wouldn’t listen. He even threatened me! We used to be such good friends and now he won’t even talk to me!” He couldn’t hold back his tears anymore, and now they flowed freely.

 “H-he says that the only way I can get him to stop is to fight him but-but I don’t want to fight! I just want to be friends again!” He wept.

 He sat in silence, quaking with sobs. He was a stars damned failure. He called himself a hero and yet he couldn’t bring himself to fight the monster his friend had transformed into.

 He wiped his eyes.

 “I’m sorry. I’ll take you to the mirror tomorrow. Promise.” He forced a smile.

 “Oh! Of course!” Shadow set a pot of water over the fireplace. He stared at his reflection in the pot. He didn’t get a lot of visitors, considering how close he lived to the forest now. It was... Nice to have someone over. The water began to bubble. He picked up the pot and poured a bit of its contents into a clear teapot. He plucked a ball of dried herbs from his cupboard.

 “I really like this kind. It looks like it’s blooming.” He said as he dropped the bulb into the water. He silently watched as tea ball began to spread about the pot.

 “...You know... The monster in the forest wasn’t always the person he is now.” He said softly.

 “It’s no trouble at all. You’ve earned it considering what you’ve probably been through since you came here.” Shadow said softly. He fished around in his cupboard for tea. Citrus? No. Chamomile with lavender? Absolutely not. Peppermint was his favorite, but brewing that would probably poison his guest..

 “Oh boy... Most of these would probably make you sick. The only teas I have that wouldn’t hurt you are earl grey and china flower. I’m sorry.” He bit his lip and prayed that his guest wouldn’t be offended.

 “Crimson...” Shadow repeated to himself. “That’s a nice name.”

 He gave a small smile.

 “I’m Shadow Kirby, but you can call me Shadow.” He said softly.

 “...I’m not a very good cook, but do you want some tea?”

 “...”

Shadow looked down at his feet. He swallowed.

 “The forest you were just in is really dangerous. Hardly anyone leaves with their life because...” He sighed. He didn’t want to talk about his friend like this but...

 “Because a flesh eating monster roams those woods.”

 Shadow lead the stranger through the underbrush, keeping an ear open for any strange noises. The forest seemed deceivingly peaceful, despite the danger that lurked within. The wind whistled through the treetops, rustling the emerald green leaves. Fireflies danced in the foliage, their gentle glow a stark contrast to the darkness of the night.

 “We’re almost there. Just a bit longer...”

 The trees ended, leaving only a grassy plain. Shadow’s house stood in front of the woods.

 “We’ll be safe here for the night. I’ll take you to the mirror tomorrow.” He opened the door for his guest.

 “And... I suppose I owe you an explanation now.”

Shadow looked over his shoulder.

"I-I'm sorry, but I can't explain right now! W-we have to get you out of here!"

He tugged at the stranger's hand.

"The exit is this way. Hurry!"
