In order for companies and organizations to publicly state that they're inclusive, they must also train their staff on inclusivity.

Tony Awards, Unpaid Wages, and a Blacklist: The Real Legacy of “Paradise Square” — OnStage Blog
It represents a system that too often fails the very people who make theatre possible. It represents an industry that celebrates artistry onstage while tolerating exploitation offstage. It represents a pattern where producers with power can act with impunity, where warnings are ignored, and where unions have to clean up messes that never should have happened in the first place.

*SFX Team waking up on ball pit day* IT'S BALL PIT DAY!!!

“We dropped different numbers of balls at different rates, different heights. We had a ramp. The ramps were at different angles, trying to get the most out of the balls as they hit the actors. After doing the tests, we figured out 35 feet above the deck of the ship was the height we needed our nets. We had these three big nets that held almost 80,000 per net. The balls dropped 35 feet into ramps that projected them towards the stunt guys. It just knocked them over. It was pretty spectacular.”

“It’s amazing to see a bunch of 40 and 50-year-olds turn into three-year-olds all of a sudden. Everybody had to pick up blue balls, hit the other guy in the head. It was like, ’Is it time for the parents to come pick up the kids?’”
-George Marshall Ruge, Stunt Coordinator for Pirates of the Caribbean

I graduated from college two weeks ago now with my degree in Theatre, with a concentration in Tech and Musical Theatre.
And one thing about my degree journey, is that my parents have never been really all that supportive of my theatre career and pursuit. They saw no money in it, and as long as I was studying theatre. I was on my own. Getting to come to anything that I was doing was a challenge. Family gatherings or events, we didn’t talk about what I was studying or about my career at all.
But, my parents came to my final theatre performance at my university. A show I was stage managing, not even on stage. And, after my graduation, my parents sat me down and said “We don’t really know what it was, but something after the show made us start thinking. So, talk to us about theatre. Why do you want to do it, what’s your plan, etc”
They also said “there’s a light that we saw in you at the theater, that we haven’t seen in a long time.” And they recognized that theatre is an industry that they know absolutely nothing about. And so, they’ve decided to be fully supportive of my career going forward. I don’t know what that’s going to look like necessarily? But, it felt really good to hear them say that and to hear them say that they’re proud.
So, that’s something that I have to celebrate right now ✨🥺

Almost five years ago, we hopped into an analysis of West End and Broadway pay to see whether any disparity lay between London and New York...
But half a decade (and a few lockdowns) later, how have things changed?
