Why We Need to Rearm the American Left -- SRAofficial

https://www.sraofficial.org/articles-1/why-we-need-to-rearm-the-american-left
“Any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.” - Karl Marx
In many ways, the history of the American working class is also the history of the gun. American people have long felt at home with a firearm at their side – as a tool for personal protection, feeding the family and fighting for their collective freedom. The American left shares this long tradition of armed self-defense. While the Anarchists and IWW were the first to be labeled as armed insurrectionists by the forces of oppression, Socialists too were encouraged to defend themselves from state and class violence a hundred years ago. Marx himself had stated that “under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered. Any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.” Labor unions had fought off attacks from company scabs and national guard troops since the turn of the century. Following the 1914 Ludlow massacre, American socialist Eugene Debs urged labor activists to acquire “enough Gatling and machine guns to match the equipment of Rockefeller’s private army of assassins … The constitution of the United States guarantees to you the right to bear arms, as it does to every other citizen”.
Firstly, lets straighten-up one common misconception: the left have relied on armed self-defense throughout our history and have never been supporters of gun control and civilian disarmament. Gun Control is an inherently liberal concept. Liberals began to embrace the ideas of pacifism, non-violence and unilateral disarmament beginning in the late 1950s. Liberal momentum for restricting the people’s access to firearms increased following the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Liberals maintain an inherent faith in the existing system, believing that by disarming the populace and handing the monopoly on armed force to the state can best assure our own safety. We on the left believe that this will be a fruitless task because it fails to address the root causes of crime and violence in this country. Only by mitigating the fundamental inequalities of economics, race and communitycan we affect these issues.
Previously, calls for gun control had mostly come from the right – as a means to suppress the rights of minorities or opponents. For example, in 1866 the Ku Klux Klan had “seized every gun and pistol found in the hands of (so called) freedmen” in order to seize political power. In response to civil unrest and organized crime violence in the 1920s, the NRA became the leading proponent of “sensible gun laws”. The Great Depression resulted in an increase in property crime as people struggled to feed their families, coupled with a rise in organized crime syndicates profiting from Prohibition. THE NRA backed the 1934 National Firearms Act which severely restricted law abiding citizens access to modern firearms. They went on to back the Dodd Bill to further restrict access to handguns during the 1960s and 70s. It is no coincidence that these two firearms laws coincided with periods ofsocial and racial unrest in which poor whites and African-Americans were fighting for social change.
During the Civil Rights struggle on the 1960s, this came to the fore as African-American groups such as The Deacons of Defense, the Black Panthers and the Young Patriots responded to state and class violence with the tactical decision to defend themselves with firearms. When liberal students traveled to the South with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) or the Student for Democratic Society (SDS) to support the growing civil rights movement they found local communities struggling for their own freedom while protecting themselves and their families from KKK and state violence through force of arms. Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) founder Fannie Lou Hamer stated: “I keep a shotgun in every corner of my bedroom and the first cracker even looks like he wants to throw some dynamite on my porch won’t write his mamma again”. Soon after, Dr. Martin Luther King applied to the FBI for a license to carry a handgun and the revolutionary Black Panther Party began patrolling their California neighborhoods to keep the community safe from racist violence. They stated: “the time has come for black people to arm themselves against this terror before it is too late”. In response to armed Black Panther protests at the state capitol, Ronald Reagan and the NRA supported a bill that bans carrying firearms in public in California.
At this point there is something we need to make emphatically clear: we are not advocating the use of firearms for violent revolution, assassination or any other illegal activities. Every American citizen has a right to armed self-defense in the face of an attack. We encourage our comrades in the left to avail themselves of this right in order to defend themselves, their communities and their families. We oppose and will not condone any unlawful activity. Part of our mission is to educate our comrades on the nuances of Federal state and local firearms laws so that they may ensure that they are in compliance with all relevant laws. If you don’t agree with your state’s restrictions on firearms, don’t break the law – join us in the fight for fair and just firearms laws. We can provide information on how to legally and safely purchase, store and use your firearm. We can provide a training on many aspects of safety, shooting and firearm use. We believe in strongly asserting our right to freedom and equality as well as armed self-defense by all legal means.
You may be wondering why we encourage the left to arm themselves if we are against bloody revolution and criminal activity. As illustrated in some of the examples above, being an activist can be dangerous. Dr King, Ms Hamer, the Black Panthers and Malcom X all realized that they could be assaulted at any time because of their beliefs and the work they were doing towards justice and freedom. Unfortunately, since the election of Donald Trump there has been a sharp increase in attacks on racial and religious minorities, LGBTQIA community members and activists. This in spite of the overall decline in rates of violent crime over the past twenty years. For those who are easily identifiable targets for the alt. right extremists and fascist movements springing up across America, there is a real danger. For years the NRA has fostered a climate of fear and xenophobia to promote gun sales. We will not do that, but we will warn everyone who may be at risk to consider their vulnerability and how they might best protect themselves andtheir loved ones.
Not only do we believe in armed personal protect but also in community defense. While we support law enforcement’s role in keeping neighborhoods safe, we also believe that everyone has some responsibility for looking after their own communities. Additionally, we have seen too many examples of injustice under the law for People of Color. By devolving some of that law enforcement responsibility to local communities we can do a better job of keeping ourselves safe and identifying problems before they get too serious.
We need to start doing a better job taking care of our neighbors and their children. By doing so, we will create a safer environment for all. What form this community self-defense may take should obviously be decided upon by that community. Some may opt for Black Panther style patrols that keep a check on racial violence and predatory drug dealing. Others may be more a form of neighborhood watch, community intervention and armed deterrence. We are also aware that sometimes the old Maoist adage of ‘power growing from the barrel of a gun’ should be remembered. When we look at lawful protests that have been disrupted and set-upon by company scabs, police or right-wing militias one of the common themes is that they were unable to protect themselves and had no means of deterrence. When we go back to the 1960s, we see the SNCC sit-ins being met by police dogs, water cannonsand truncheons. When activist James Meredith was shot during his March Against Fear, the Deacons of Defense provided armed security to ensure that the march continued. Many people have drawn attention to the different responses from the state seen at the Bundy militia occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and the recent peaceful protests at Standing Rock. While Bundy’s militia remained in place for weeks and were treated well bythe authorities, the peaceful DAPL protesters were attacked on numerous occasions and in some cases seriously injured. In some cases, legal armed self-defense can provide a deterrence against those who would threaten our legal rights to protest.
Finally we remind our comrades on the left, new and old, that shooting and working with firearms is fun! While liberals will decry that these are evil weapons of death, we know that they’re simply inanimate tools that can put food on the table, provide technical challenges for the hobbyist gunsmith and enjoyment in a wide range of shooting sports. Shooting involves meditation, mindfulness, self-discipline, physical conditioning and strength. We encourage everyone to explore shooting sports and practical self-defense training available in their area. It can be a fun social activity with many personal benefits for mind and body.

joab kills amasa
And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab's hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground [...] — 2 Samuel 20:8-10 (ESV)

people are people, they are never inherently "evil". they do evil things, some more than others, but they are still people. Whenever I encounter a most hateful wretch, I do try and keep in mind their person-hood and to mourn the person they could have been. Regardless, evil must be stopped.
I thought it was fairly normal to feel empathy for bad people.
I thought it was common, even.
But after my Elon/Grimes post... now I'm wondering if I was mistaken about that.
I wrote a post about Trump being traumatized after his assassination attempt and a post about his poor adaptation to aging. I expressed sympathy for him in both cases. But I still maintain my white hot hatred of him and wish for him to face consequences.
Elon was abused by his father. Some of the stories are incredibly tragic. Hearing those stories triggers an involuntary response in my emotional systems that I can't stop no matter how much I despise present-day Elon. I also wonder if that abuse never occurred maybe we wouldn't be dealing with this current clusterfuck.
I have never held so much anger towards a single person as I do my brother. But I also see him as a victim of abuse. I know he was once a really good person and he was slowly corrupted. I feel sorry for him. I mourn the amazing person he used to be. And I still love him.
But that doesn't make me any less angry.

My stance on the matter is that the bible is, as you say here, a document, and is as such vulnerable to the whims of those who copy down the words. I find the people who insist that the bible as it is is directly the word of God to be quite silly, as the bible doesn't pretend to be that often enough with all the passages that are letters from one person to another, whatever wisdom may be contained therein. Where I recon I more so differ with you is that I think that there is an ultimate underlying purpose, to that of the document of the bible in its many forms and to existing in general, that of an all encompassing love and kindness. It is unfortunately the case that humanity is flawed and errs in that course, but with sufficient effort in regards to the immaterial and betterment of the material we can get close. That aside, Ive always found it interesting to see someone take a purely academic approach to exploring these sorts of things, or rather peoples approaches to them. You do good work as a educational communicator that takes complex and esoteric topics and makes them more digestible to a lay-crowd.
"These right wingers don't follow the REAL teachings of Christ"
They ignore the parts of the Bible which encourage compassion and charity just as easily as a nice Christian ignores the parts about misogyny and bigotry. Religious documents are just documents.

just a handful of years ago a series of peaceful protests and marches to the border walls was responded to with thousands being gunned down and murdered.
"B-but Palestinians can get their freedom with peace not violence 🥺🥺" no. Screw your feelings. The armed resistance against colonizers and murderers is what will give Palestinians their freedom and what will eventually achieve real peace.
An enemy that bombs and uses white phosphorus against civilians doesn't know nor practice what your broken moral compass describes as "peace". Freedom was proven throughout history not to be achieved through kneeling and asking the oppressor to kindly stop. Freedom needs to be taken by force. Your little Utopian way of thinking doesn't work in the real world. Your feelings don't matter because you're not the one living under occupation. Your feelings don't matter because you're not one of the thousands of children who lost their limbs. You're not one of the children who became orphans due to this genocide. You're not the mother who lost her child to the carpet bombing. You're not the father carrying the remains of your child in plastic bags. You're not the newlywed woman who lost her husband. You're not the one at risk of either getting killed any second or losing your loved ones in the blink of an eye!
"Peace" is not really a thing you see during a live ethnic cleansing!

the purpouse of a thing is what it does. I used to be a hardcore zionist. then, after years of encountering people with ties to the area and reading about the history and the words of zionisms founders and more recent israeli and palestinian historians, its only become ever clearer that it is a program entirely antithetical to ideas of peace and justice. it is only though a profound ignorance or cruelty that one can be a zionist.
and yes, the jews have a connection to the land. they are one of the people who for thousands of years have called it home. Zionism, as it has existed for 120 years, exists to establish a land for a people in a land that already has people, with the inevitable horrific consequences for the people already there following. Working to establish an ethnostate by bringing in people from across the globe to repopulate villages and cities that have been massacred and forceably expelled is nothing close to the same as any sort of landback program. a large proportion of the current Palestinian christian community is that of the same ones that have been in the area since christianity became a thing, a continuous line all the way back thousands of years. The state of israel and its efforts are an existential threat to their very existence. I always try my best to be kind and considerate but whenever I think to the images of the worlds oldest churches bombed into rubble during mass during an important religious holiday with a packed attendance, I find it difficult to not just express an uncontrolled wroth. Quite simply, ive seen too much and I know too much to be convinced of any excuse for zionism. zionism is evil, and its machines of propaganda have been unfortunately effective.
If you're suddenly worried about antisemitism because of elon musk but you spent the last year and a half harassing Jews and "Zionists" and excusing antisemitism in your own movement, you don't care about antisemitism
I don't trust you. The Jewish community doesn't trust you. You never cared about us, still don't, and you made it very clear

you are a horrificaly hateful person. A native peoples right to exist apart from a system of domination and extermination is ill comparable to the people trying to exterminate them. a campain of extermination and murder of a population and support for it is hardly a coherent progressive/prolgbt position. Even past that, you are just engaging in the same old racist lies of painting the enemy as hoards of foriegn brown folks and violent barbarians, and not people who live lives and exist.
For the sake of your soul I hope you come to realize how awful youve been, so that you might have the chance to live better. Peace be with you, should you choose to seek it.

the purpose of a thing is what it does. and zionism is a ethnonationalist project that requires with its core aims ethnic cleansing and violence towards a peoples native to the land. It is, as it has been aimed to in the abstract and as it has functioned in reality, an attempt to create a land for a people in a land that already had people in it, and its inevitable result has been a continuous effort to push them out by any means necessary. Its a truely antiquated evil unfit for the modern age. If someone where to call themselves a zionist the only way they would deserve in any way a calm and peaceful approach is if they were severely mistaken. I hope you come to your senses and become a kinder person. Have a good day, friend.
