Foundation - Years & Years
The opening track to Years & Years debute album ‘Communion’ follows lead singer-songwriter Olly to the realisation he must end a relationship. This song creates such an obscure feeling it’s hard to put into words. Almost three minutes of feeling everything but nothing at the same time, yet the song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of sudden awareness. A need to end a relationship. The lyrics convey the fight to convince himself that it is a good thing.
Throughout the song the hypnotising baseline increases in tempo, creating a sense of urgency. The lyrics ‘You used to work me out, but you never worked it out for me’ shows a very one sided relationship. Having both lines sang together without a pause can show an urgent need to escape soon. The final lyric of the song ‘And all the things I want, I really shouldn't get’ followed out by a decreasing dark synth gives a powerful end leaving the thought of being undeserving of love from a partner in the listeners mind. The slow end reducing to complete silence almost mimics the feeling of relief that it’s finally over and it’s for the best.
Loll my first attempt at a ‘music rating blog’ hahah! Basically I got into a habit of rating every single song I listened to out of 10 and I wanted a place to express the feelings I get when listening to certain songs.
