I’m so sad people don’t talk about mantis and drax’s relationship more.

Whether you see them as platonic or romantic (I personally see Drax and Mantis as a demisexual/asexual couple or possibly a queerplatonic couple), it’s so obvious how quickly the two become such good companions to each other.

Drax literally has no obligation to save Mantis when Ego’s planet starts to sink him into it during their escape in GOTG VOL2. He has no obligation to care for her (in his own drax-ish way) and lift her up into believing in herself.

He just happens to meets his “hideous” creature on a random planet and sees this innocence in her that makes him ache in memory of his daughter, and shares so much laughter and mutual joy with her at every chance, and refuses to let her be sucked into the ground with him because she’s unconscious and so much weaker than him, he comes to care so deeply for this “hideous pet” he met only a few days prior.

Not only that, but Mantis draws so much power and joy from Drax, her first real friend. He isn’t hesitant about her using her abilities on him, unlike Quill or Gamora. He lets her see the parts he rarely shows visibly. His race may have blunt words, but he very rarely expresses his sadness outwardly. Joy, anger, sure, but his sadness is very close to his heart and only spoken when he feels comfortable to do so.

And Mantis thrives off his affirmations, the “I believe in you” giving her strength in her moment of fear and doubt. She laughs the most with him, and even though he can hurt her feelings with his bluntness, she seems to understand what he means deep down. And if not, Drax is willing to soften his words and explain his reasons behind them.

They work like an well oiled machine. When she is weak and doubtful, he is there to raise her up and make her smile, and when he is coarse with words and unable to shed his tears, she is there to open his heart through her own and give him the incentive to smooth out the harsh edges of his speech.

In being friends with each other they gain a better grasp on how to be better friends with others, while still keep their core alienness about them.

So I think y’all should appreciate their relationship more.
