The Clutter Family Murders were a grisly event that took place in the small farming community of Holcomb, Kansas, in 1959. The case was famously chronicled by Truman Capote in his 1966 non-fiction novel, "In Cold Blood." The family, consisting of father Herbert, mother Bonnie, and children Nancy and Kenyon, was brutally murdered in their home.

The criminals who committed the murders were Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Smith. They planned to rob the Clutter family, believing they possessed a significant amount of cash in a safe in their house. This belief was based on information Hickock had heard while serving time in prison.

Horrifyingly, when they discovered there was no safe or money, they decided to kill the entire family to leave no witnesses. Ultimately, they left the crime scene with little more than a portable radio, a pair of binoculars, and less than fifty dollars in cash.

The murders shocked the nation and led to a massive manhunt. Hickock and Smith were eventually captured in Las Vegas in December 1959. Following a lengthy trial, they were both found guilty of murder and were sentenced to death.

After spending five years on death row at Kansas State Penitentiary (now known as Lansing Correctional Facility), they were both hanged on April 14, 1965. Their death sentences served as a chilling reminder of the brutality of the crime they committed and the justice that awaited them.

Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" provides an in-depth exploration of the crime, investigation, and trial. It is a pioneering piece of literature that started the True Crime genre.
