Author’s Note: I wanted to write something for Pride month about Emily. This is more of an exploratory than plotty piece.

Emily knows that her mother does not blame herself. She blames her husband, Emily’s father, who was never around. Elizabeth Prentiss does not blame her career choices as an ambassador, how she always prioritized her career over family, how even marriage and children had been a strategic choice. She does not care about if her life provided any love or stability to her daughter, because she knows she gave her an education and money, and those are just as good as a substitution. Perhaps if Elizabeth was less analytical, she might have comforted herself that the life she provided for Emily could be seen as an adventure.

After all, Emily grew up cultured, trapezing across the Middle East and Europe, speaking many tongues and showing off at even a young age how intelligent she was. But drinking wine at dinner time at the age of ten, also meant that Emily started buying cigarettes with her generous allowance at the age of thirteen. Being tutored by the best meant that Emily never really had the chance to make friends.

The concept of identity and self had become alarmingly foreign to Laur- no, Emily. She had just met Clyde; that made her Emily and not Lauren. Tomorrow, back in Italy with Ian and Declan she would be Lauren again.

Sometimes having so many identities got confusing. Lauren Reynolds, Emily Prentiss, Elena Ankov and so many more names – all of them represented women that were profoundly different. Some were arms dealers, a few were mercenaries, one was a hitwoman and another one was a CIA Agent. Some were short-tempered, others patient. Lauren liked the French cuisine, Elena preferred Iraqi food, and Emily … Emily seemed to fade into obscurity more and more which each day that Lauren walked the earth.
