Be not afraid.

Wolfwood knows his basic Scripture, and when he looks at Vash, he thinks: I'm not.

On a surface level, this is true. Vash is spindly, more prone to smile than start a fight, always ready with an outstretched hand. He and Meryl chatter away like old friends on the way to the next town, and Roberto, as gruff as he is, is not immune to Vash's terribly corny jokes. Everything about him suggests openness; even the spikes on his hair look as soft as chick's down.

He is Nicholas the Punisher. Fear has been drained out of him with each gunshot; sometimes he wonders if the drugs also scrape his mind, his heart, clean as they do his flesh. All he feels is numbness, with occasional flashes of anger, and really, it's the best thing. It's better he does not feel.

But Wolfwood begins to taste fear again, when Vash looks at him, through him, and says so tenderly, I can see it in his eyes.

In the end, it's not the body riddled with a network of scars and metal and grotesque stories stamped on flesh. It's not the wings, spread out, shining, across the dark sky. It's not the destruction of JuLai, ashes to dust.

It's the absence of him.

And even when Wolfwood finds him, under a different name, he continues to carry that fear. Every time Vash escapes some new near death experience—the luck of the devil, he once dryly joked—Wolfwood thinks, I could lose him.

He thinks, I can't lose him.

Be not afraid, the Scriptures say. But they've never encountered Vash before.

Be not afraid, they whisper, as Wolfwood slips behind Vash during another firefight, Punisher glowing in his hands. Be not afraid, as Wolfwood plucks another bullet from Vash's side, fingertips glistening with blood. Be not afraid, as he spreads Vash out on the bed, mouthing at every scar, murmuring, Tongari, tongari, tongari, with every exhale.

He is afraid. Very afraid.

How can a mortal man love this much? What will be the consequences?

Vashwood sexy times. Vash catches Wolfwood's cross necklace between his teeth as it dangles between them. Flustered then feral Wolfwood ensues.
