Why is Caleb leaving Spencer more upsetting than him leaving Hanna?
Okay, so first of all… I made a small post earlier on today expressing my thought that Caleb leaving Spencer is a lot more upsetting and sadder than him leaving Hanna. On this post I have had a lot of people commenting that it either isn’t sadder, or stating “true… but…”
So, here I am going to try and explain my thought process behind my statement.
First of all, I’d like to start with Caleb leaving Hanna.
I’d first like to point out here that it is obvious from the flashbacks that Caleb and Hanna were having a lot of arguments. Their relationship was going through a really rough patch and they both knew it. From the flashbacks, I felt that Caleb was giving a lot up for Hanna but she wasn’t doing the same for him. I feel like everything in that relationship, at that point in time, is what Hanna wants and never what Caleb wants.
A rocky relationship is never going to last long and Caleb gave Hanna plenty of warning that he might not be there when she gets back if she goes on that working trip, and not go through Europe with him.
She had pre warning that he was going to leave, and she still left. Yes, she went back and she was upset, but she knew the consequences of her actions and she knew that he wasn’t going to be there. Maybe not knew but she knew there’d be a chance that he wasn’t going to be there. You can see the acceptance in her eyes when she gets back to their room.
Obviously she’s upset by this, but it’s not a shock to her and she knows she messed up. Their break up was basically on her.
Now let’s talk about Spencer.
Despite the fact that the troubles in their relationship were all on Caleb’s shoulders, it’s still a lot more upsetting to me than that. Spencer needed time to understand and forgive Caleb (and Hanna) for his feelings about her, her feelings towards him and the kiss that happened between the two of them. This is completely understandable. She needs time to mend a seemingly cracked heart (I’m not saying broken because at this point - there were chances of Caleb mending it again).
It is sadder because she got back to the barn, ready to forgive Caleb and talk through their troubles she was ready to move past his feelings for Hanna. Of course she would never forget that and it would have probably always have been in the back of her mind, but she was willing to forgive him for what he had done.
You can tell by her reactions that she was not expecting him to have left. Just her facial expressions show this - and show the heartache that she feels because he has left her with no warning.
Spencer absolutely did not expect, and had no warning that Caleb was going to leave her. It is as though she is being punished for something that should lie entirely on his shoulders. Caleb’s actions towards Spencer are completely unfair.
Spencer is so obviously completely and absolutely heart broken and not expecting this and I hate to think that he’s made her feel like it’s her fault he left. Whereas for Hanna, it kind of was her fault.

For those of you on my other post saying it’s not sadder when he left Spencer because either:
a) Caleb was with Hanna for longer than Spencer b) Caleb was with Hanna for 7 years c) Caleb cheated on Hanna with Spencer.
then I will explain why these, in my opinion, are weak excuses for Hanna, Caleb and Haleb.
a) Yes, Caleb was with Hanna for a lot longer than he was with Spencer, but as far as both of the girls are concerned, they were in love with Caleb it doesn’t matter how long they’d been together. Obviously being together for a longer time means that there’s more to lose in the relationship but that doesn’t mean that it is automatically sadder I’d also like to point out here that Caleb and Spencer were friends for a long, long time. Although not romantically, she’s lost a lot more than a boyfriend and she’s lost one of her closest friends.
b) It’s not 7 years. I think the main problem people think here is that every season of the show was a different year, however, I think we have been told that this isn’t the case. I think that seasons 3, 4 and 5 all happened in their senior year of high school, that means that the time they spent together was about 4-5 years. Obviously a long time but 7 years is an exaggeration I think.
c) Well this statement is just a lie. He left Hanna because they were meant to go travelling and she had chosen work over their relationship, again. That meant that whatever went on between Spencer and Caleb in Spain and in DC (which Spencer had assured Hanna was nothing more than friendship) was after Hanna and Caleb broke up. Spencer seeked Hanna’s acceptance before starting anything with Caleb so in no way did he cheat on Hanna with Spencer.
I apologise that this post is so long, I hope I expressed myself well enough throughout it.

I’ve seen so many posts claiming that nobody ships spaleb or saying that anyone who ships spaleb is pathetic, like seriously? What is your problem? I loved spaleb (before fuckboy c*leb happened), they had amazing chemistry, they did everything right, it was a realistic portrayal of an adult relationship and I loved it. This may shock you but everybody is entitled to their opinion, so please don’t insult me for liking a ship and please don’t generalise the fandom because there are quite a few people who ship spaleb and it literally makes me so angry that people think they have the right to call me pathetic because I ship, a ship that they don’t like

Somebody’s going to be honest with Spencer. I can’t say which of the party it will be, but Spencer knows there’s something not right with Caleb — and someone will tell her the truth about what happened that night.

You know, I honestly don’t think it will be Caleb. I think Hanna will tell her what happened that night. Or, worse, Uber A. I mean, it’s classical A to send a text telling the girls something that they don’t know, but Uber A (and all As, really) have a particular interest in fucking things up for the girls. Perhaps next episode, before they find Hanna, Uber A tells Spencer that Hanna and Caleb kissed as a way to test her loyalties.
If not, then most likely it will be Hanna, after she’s found. She’ll probably see Caleb and Spencer, Caleb acting weird around her and maybe Spencer talks to her, weirdly and awkwardly, about it and Hanna tells her about the kiss.
This is ridiculous. Why endanger two friendships and two relationships just for a couple of episodes?
