RC #3 - Question #2(a)- How does citizen journalism challenge traditional media's influence?
Part (5/6)
Yellowbrick (2023), states in their blog about the impact of Citizen Journalism. According to them, Citizen journalism challenges traditional media by enabling ordinary people to report news directly, bypassing traditional gatekeepers like newspapers and TV channels. This democratizes news dissemination, allowing for diverse perspectives and stories that might be ignored by mainstream media to reach a wide audience quickly. Through smartphones and social media, citizen journalists can share real-time updates on events, increasing the speed at which news spreads and enhancing public engagement with content. However, this shift raises concerns about accuracy and credibility, as citizen reporters may not always follow strict fact-checking protocols. Overall, citizen journalism disrupts traditional media's influence by offering alternative narratives and engaging the public in news creation and discussion.

RC #3 - Question #1(c)- Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world. Include screenshots of where the hashtag is being used.
Part (4/6)
These screenshots show news about Starbucks and McDonald's losing a lot of money because many people are not buying from them anymore. This is happening because these people are upset about how the companies are involved with Israel. The news says that Starbucks lost $11 billion, and their stocks went down by about 9%. McDonald's lost $7 billion. This is because of the hashtags #boycottstarbucks and #boycottmcdonalds on social media, where people talk about not using these companies because they don't agree with what they are doing. So, because so many people decided to stop going to these places, the companies lost a lot of money.

RC #3 - Question #1(b)- Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world. Include screenshots of where the hashtag is being used.
Part (3/6)
The screenshots depict a series of events tied to the hashtags #boycottstarbucks and #boycottMcDonalds, which have fueled a movement against these companies due to their perceived support for Israel during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The first image is a headline summarizing the situation, indicating how social media has played a crucial role in spreading the boycott movement and driving individuals to take action.
In the second image, related to #boycottMcDonalds, we see an incident where protestors have brought mice into a McDonald’s outlet as a form of protest, an unconventional and disruptive tactic to express their stance.
The third image is connected to #boycottstarbucks, showing protestors who have vandalized a Starbucks location by breaking its windows. This act of vandalism is another method of protest, aiming to garner public attention and cause disruption to express disapproval of the company's actions or affiliations.
These screenshots demonstrate the powerful role that social media can play in organizing and amplifying activism. Hashtags have become rallying cries that can quickly spread a message and mobilize people globally, leading to physical demonstrations and actions like those pictured, reflecting the impact of hashtag activism on real-world events.

RC #3 - Question #1(a) - How things like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo have changed the concept of power on the web and the world. Find another hashtag from the last 5 years that has also contributed to this change. Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world.
Part (2/6)
Khatib (2023) stated in his article about how people are using social media to start boycotts against two big companies, McDonald’s and Starbucks, because of the war between Israel and Hamas. Many people are upset and calling for boycotts on the internet. This has led to protests in different parts of the world, like in Utah, USA, and Sydney, Australia, where people are showing they are unhappy with these companies. On social media, especially TikTok, lots of videos are being made with hashtags like #boycottstarbucks and #boycottmcdonalds. These videos have been watched millions of times by people all over. This shows that many people are joining in on the boycotts because they learned about them online. The reason people started boycotting Starbucks and McDonald's goes back to the day when Israel started attacking Palestine. For Starbucks, it was because they had a legal fight with a workers' union over a social media post about Palestine. For McDonald’s, it was because one of their restaurants in Israel was giving free meals to Israeli soldiers. People saw these actions and decided to boycott these companies. It’s part of a bigger movement where people use the internet to try to make a change in the world. This shows the power of social media in bringing people together to stand up for what they believe in, even against big companies.

Question 2:
Democratization can work both ways. We have largely focused on the positive but there are very negative consequences of democratization as well.
Guzman and Donlevy (2023) stated in their article in New York Post about Brianna Pinnix, who got in big trouble because of a video that spread all over the internet. In the video, she was on a train to New York and started yelling at some tourists from Germany, telling them to leave the country. She seemed to be drunk and didn't listen when her boyfriend tried to calm her down. After the video went online, lots of people saw it and didn't like what she did. The company she worked for, Capital Rx, didn't want someone who acted like that working for them, so they fired her. They said they don't allow anyone to act in a mean or unfair way. This story shows how being mean or unfair to others, especially on video, can lead to big problems like losing your job. It's a reminder that what you do online can have real effects on your life offline.
This whole situation shows how powerful the internet can be. Before, something like this might have only been seen by the people nearby, but now, with smartphones and social media, anyone's actions can be seen by the whole world. It's a big reminder that we should be careful about how we act, whether online or in real life because the consequences can be more serious than we think. Losing her job was a direct result of Brianna's actions being shared online, showing that what we say and do can quickly come back to us, especially when it's not nice.

Would Khaby achieve such status without democratization, i.e., if social media did not exist
(Part 5/5)
Without the open and equal chances that social media provides, Khaby probably wouldn't have become so famous. Before social media, becoming a star usually meant you had to get noticed by big companies or have special connections. But platforms like TikTok change that by letting anyone share their talent and possibly become a hit. Without these chances to show his funny videos to the world, Khaby might have remained unknown. So, the fair and open opportunities on social media were key to his success.

The Role of Democratization:
(Pat 2/5)
Online democratization really helped Khaby become famous on TikTok. “Khaby’s journey to fame began when he discovered TikTok” (Alarm, 2023). This idea means that everyone has a fair chance to show off their talents and get noticed on the internet. TikTok is a place where anyone can post a video and find an audience. Khaby started just like anyone else, watching videos and posting his funny takes on popular trends. His special way of being funny, without even talking, made him stand out. Because TikTok shows good videos to lots of people, no matter how famous the person who made them is, Khaby's videos started to get more and more attention. This showed how powerful online democratization is: Khaby went from just another person on the app to a star known all over the world, all because his unique style caught on with people everywhere.
