Someone in a weaving discord I'm in saw this much-jpg'd image on Facebook. They enjoyed it and crossposted it. I enjoyed it and asked if there was a source. Alas, unattributed. We would never know.

Not so! By their magical librarianship and citation-hunting powers, @ginneke tracked the image first to Pinterest, then a long-defunct blog, then a connection with the 1960s fairytale retellings of Amadel Williams-Ellis illustrated by one William Stobbs. He had the correct whimsical art style - a hit! Another server member suggested a likely candidate tale of Baba Yaga involving a cat and a loom.

Unfortunately, these books have never been digitised, not even the tables of contents, so there was no way to know whether they might be correct. And my various libraries had never heard of the books. However, for about £7 each on ebay they were within my shenanigans budget - I was invested now.

I ordered two, mostly at random. Leafed all the way through both of them, got nearly to the end with some delightful other creatures but not yet the Loom Cat...

..... and then all of a sudden there it was! In a Baba Yaga story in Round a the World Fairy Tales exactly as predicted! Success in tracking down an 80-year-old untitled children's book illustration via several people and much joy. I'm very satisfied and will put the full Baba Yaga tale in a reblog.

John, after the Great Resurrection essentially became God, and he named everything after things from western culture and mythos, his friends, his family, even Alecto who is literally made of his own flesh and blood and the soil of his home and the spirit of his world was named after a spirit of Vengeance from Greek Mythology and gave her the shape of a western toy. For all we know, John very well could just be the name he chose for himself after everything happened when no one else was there to remember his name.

But his daughter? He named her Kiriona. A Maori name.

I know John's ethnicity has not been confirmed and chances are that he might just be a White Guy™ and maybe I'm just projecting my own experience and relationship with language onto him, but I'd like to think John is Maori too.

It's just something about the fact that when he reshaped and renamed the world, the only thing he gave a name from his own culture, his mother tongue was his daughter.

On some level I get it. English is my first language but it's not my mother tongue and maybe I can express myself more eloquently in English than I can in Hindi, there's a sort of disconnect between what I'm feeling versus what I'm saying. Maybe that disconnect is what makes expressing myself in English easier, because English is a cold unfeeling language while Hindi is a burning fire.

Maybe that disconnect is why John renamed everything in a foreign tongue based on foreign culture. And maybe that disconnect is why he couldn't bring himself to name his own daughter in a foreign tongue and gave her a name in his mother tongue, based on his own culture.

Somehow Tamsyn Muir manages to convey that feeling of surrounding and expressing yourself in a foreign tongue and the pain of forgetting your own mother tongue and culture so well and poignantly without ever talking about it outright and it hits right in my soul.

Once again, maybe I'm just projecting but. Damn. TazMuir, your mind.

Things you can watch/do instead of YouTube, For those who may have trouble finding things to do.

1. Internet Archive. Has plenty of videos to watch, plenty of games you can play that are emulated right on the website. You can also find entire collections of roms. For emulators, check out Emulation General Wiki to find the best emulator for the system you want to emulate.

2. r/piracy has a wiki full of safe places to read comics and manga, to watch anime and cartoons, and to watch movies.

3. Virtualbox, you can set up a Windows XP virtual box and get old PC games from Internet Archive. You can also check out CD Game World if you need a no-cd patch.

4. Saltybet. A Livestream of MUGEN with thousands of characters fighting against each other, sometimes things get hilarious. Runs 24/7.

5. The Cutting Room Floor, spend hours reading up on cut content from your favorite games.

6. Lost Media Wiki, read up on lost movie, books, animation, video games, etc.

7. Neocities, learn coding and make your own website!

8. WebDSR, explore shortband radio

9. Radio Garden, listen to radio stations from around the world

10. Every Noise At Once, explore the widest archive of music genres, with samples and Spotify playlists

11. My Retro TV, pick and era and watch popular television from that time period

I can finally share my piece for Broads And Broadswords vol 2! (@broadsandbroadswords) A wonderful zine that, this year alone, managed to donate over 6500 USD to the Transgender Law Center.

I decided to do a take on a sword in the stone type of story.

She was fated to claim an enchanted sword and, upon doing so, was crowned queen. And heavy is that crown; she has seen much horror and loss, some of it by her own hand. So she pleads for the stone to take back the sword and its burden. (Okay, maybe less plead and more she tried to violently ram it back in place with sheer anger and anguish) But fate is a cold uncaring beast.
