thinking about vash & knives & body horror… & knives complete lack of reaction to his own grotesque body. horrific things happen to knives' body throughout the manga, many of them of his own volition but others without his direct consent, but he never ever cares that his body changes shape into something other and distorted and gross. he stays completely unbothered because it's not horror to him. it's just him. he does not have a baseline of what’s normal (what’s human) so nothing is grotesque to him. knives believes himself to be the perfect & ultimate being, so whatever horrific things his body does, that's just him, part of him, part of his abilities as a plant. he will morph his own body to suit his needs or join plants to himself because those are natural functions of his independent body.

but vash wants to pass as human, he feels human, he's spent a lot of time with humans so he has that baseline of what is 'normal'. any reminder that he is not human feels like a disgusting invasion. he won't even heal his body because that ability is a reminder that he is inhuman. it's like.. cross-species dysphoria. not to mention the few times his body has used its powers & morphed into something horrific it's been because knives forces it to happen completely against his will. so the physical feeling of his body doing something normal for a plant, even as benign as sprouting feathers, becomes utter body horror to vash because it is not normal (for a human). and something grotesque like the angel arm is a normal function of his plant body but he can’t see it as anything but horror bc his planthood is wrapped up in the psychological trauma of knives' assaults and his unwilling use as a weapon. but knives is someone who is completely free in his body because he is secure in his identity as a plant and so he can’t understand why vash would want to suppress the beautiful and natural and powerful things his body can do
