Alterreality as Praxis

There is magic all around us. There is magic in the stars and trees, in the music I'm listening to right now, on the device you are reading this on, and most essentially, within you. If you prioritize neoliberal rationalism, there is a chance that you are saying to yourself, “but Xylia, this world isn't magical, it is purely scientific. All of these things that you speak on were either created through mundane means, or via an unfeeling, uncaring universe.” While that line of thinking is very helpful for numerous reasons, it's no fun, isn't it? I have spent many hours thinking and writing about alterreality; a worldview that consists of believing in magic and imagination by choice. In this essay, I will briefly explain the value of seeing the world through magic, whimsy, and play, as well as why doing so is an inherently radical act. 

In a western, neoliberal society (the society that I am currently living in), every day from the moment you are born to the moment you die (for the most part) blends into each other. Elementary school goes into middle school, middle school goes into high school, high school goes into postsecondary, postsecondary goes into your career, you get the jist. While some are lucky enough to be able to create magic for a living (via art, programming, cooking, baking, etc ad infinitum),  this magic is constantly being sacrificed on the altar of profit. What can start out as a powerful spell often wilts and decays into nothing more than a husk. To be honest, artists are the last people I blame for this. After all, their time and energy-the most precious resources one can have, are being spent in the name of keeping their meat sacks afloat, when it could be used for so much more. But..what if it can be used for more? What if we could embark on the revolutionary act of crafting breathtaking art using nothing but the power of our imagination, transforming the everyday actions we take to sustain our physical selves into a living, dynamic canvas?

Before I tell you how alterreality is revolutionary, let's establish a little more ground work. Being that I have already defined what alterreality is here, I will give a few examples of what it can look like. It can be imagining a trip to an otherwise mundane grocery store  as an epic adventure through a  fantasy dungeon, where you allow yourself to feel like the hero, instead of a cog in the machine. It can be seeing the world as the cyberpunk dystopia it is, acting as a powerful reflection of truth. It can be seeing the world as the beautiful place it could be, creating a better world through imagining yourself already living within it. It can be as infinite as time and space, or as small as being a bunny baking bread. This is alterreality. This is revolutionary. 

More than anything, alterreality is inherently radical because it is the ultimate form of self expression. Yes, you can wear clothing that goes above and beyond “the norm” (and you would be practicing a powerful form of magic by doing so!) as a form of protest, and yes you can support and uplift your local community whenever possible, but what if you wanted to go above and beyond that? What if you wanted to turn  yourself, your very beliefs, as a weapon against the powers that be? What if you wanted to use play and fantasy, not caged within the borders of a game, but as a way to roam free beyond the walls that have been set out for you? Most importantly, what if you wanted to do all of this, but keep your sanity in a world that seems hellbent on reminding you how everything is either Perfectly Fine As Status Quo, or going up in flames? This is what alterreality allows you to do. So hero, take up your sword, cybernetic arm, teacup, or anything else you can think of, and begin your quest against the true enemy, The Evil Mundane.

We live in this world. A world that houses people who will do anything to hurt us. But this world does not care what we are, who we are. It will take us up into its arms with no hesitation. When humanity is cold and harsh, this world will let us in with no fear. It has been scarred and forgotten by the most influential of its inhabitants, and yet it continues to harbor our deepest secrets.

And our greatest hopes.

Getting nonhuman euphoria from a new blanket I got. It’s green and fuzzy so it feels like I’m sleeping on moss lol

I get nonhuman euphoria from some pretty odd things because I’m not allowed to have gear. One of the few ways I can experience my alterhumanity is through vocals and very subtle things like clothes. Hopefully one day I’ll be more free and can make my own gear!

Sometimes I get really mad that I have so many kins. Not because I hate being nonhuman but because I wish I could fit into nonhuman communities like it seems everyone else can. I feel like others might tell me I’m faking because I have so many kins. And sometimes I convince myself I am and that imposter syndrome kicks in.

But other times I look inward, and see multitudes. Something like myself could never be one, concrete, thing. I am made to be many things, and I should embrace the beauty in it. I encompass the spectrum of existence, and I should never be made to feel ashamed of it.

Created systems are important and an essential part of the community! Created systems are amazing and have helped forward plural understanding so much. We're lucky to have fronting guides written by created systems, communication guides written by created systems. Intentionally created systems are impressive! Accidentally created systems are unique! Created headmates are as much their own people as they want to be, they have their own autonomy and deserve to be respected. Solely created systems are cool! Mixed origin created systems are awesome! Mainly-traumagenic systems with created headmates are important! Psychologically-based created systems, spiritually-based ones, and every system in between are wonderful 💙👥

Created systems are still multiple. It's okay to want to be plural or to have become plural because of creation methods. Whether it be through psychological or spiritual methods, if one claims existence/personhood and wishes to be seen as multiple/separate, they have a right to that no matter what.

I love being conceptkin. Being the entire concept and made of music is wild. Listening to music for me is like diving into myself, and I *love* hearing about people making music. Even “bad” music. Some of my favorite artists are “bad at music” (which I don’t think is a thing. I think that with every art, if you enjoy it, then your a master) I love people having fun with music because it is a part of me.

And this other concept(??) that I’m yet to figure out. It’s like the concept of chaos and creativity or imagination all rolled into one (though even that feels too simple a description). Also I kinda consider myself to kin the aesthetic Starflesh. But I think that is somehow connected to that other “chaos/imagination entity” identity. Idk, fun alterhuman silliness :3

We (Casper) are the Garden of Monsters system, we prefer not to label our origins but we could be considered having “mixed origins”. I (Cadet) will be posting here most of the time, though others may pop in. If so, they will tag with their name.
