My set from @bassguitarshow was released to Bandcamp subscribers - here's one minute of it. It's a single 25 minute piece, and it grows & morphs slowly. I love getting to play parts with big holes in them, knowing I can put other things in those gaps later on. It's a completely different relationship with time than exists in a 3 minute pop song. Fun gig last night at the National Media Museum in Bradford, organised by @leedsbeckettmusic - playing solo & improvising with fellow Students, and chatting a little about improv & audiences. I love old photos! Found a folder with my 1st & 2nd ever solo shoots from 99/2000. That's an ART SGX Nightbass processor & an original Lexicon JamMan in the rack - the Nightbass was my 3rd ever processor (the 1st 2 being a Korg A4 & Korg AX300B) and was the 1st thing I ever wrote about for Bassist magazine. The JamMan was the 2nd. That red Modulus is the same 4 string I play now, refinished by Martin Peterson at The Gallery. By the time of the shoot with the Ashdown amp in 2000, I like to think my sense of style had improved, though the matching nails & jacket in the 4 string fretless photo is a strong look. I spent yesterday at @rockfieldstudiosofficial recording a live-in-the-studio gig with Quill, featuring Bev Bevan, of ELO, & my long time collaborator Andy Edwards on drums. Playing with 2 drummers is a whole lot of fun. I'd never played with the band, had no rehearsal & had learned the entire set I'm 2 weeks - we all thought we'd have time between tracks to try things out, but then there was a live studio audience so we ran it like a gig! It ended up going really well, & playing ELO's classic Telephone Line with Bev on drums was a proper treat. Gear-wise, I did the whole gig on my @elrickbasses SLC Fretless, & having taken ALL the pedals, just used the @aguilaramp Tone Hammer preamp, @darkglasselectronics VMT & the @moddevices MOD Duo. Had a wonder time yesterday afternoon hanging with my long-time friend and fellow @scottsbasslessons contributor, the great Ed Friedland - @mrquarternote - Ed is a hugely versatile and experienced bassist, currently touring with The Mavericks. I couldn't make it to the gig, so was delighted to get to see the soundcheck - they're a fabulous band, and Ed anchors their blend of American roots music, Latin styles and cajun grooves with his fantastic tone, feel and restrained tasteful lines. PART 3 - Just uploaded the full version of this vid for my Bandcamp subscribers, over at stevelawson.bandcamp.com/subscribe - here's a bit of the solo, which is probably reminiscent of the kind of twiddly nonsense I'd be playing if I was at #NAMM2018, accompanied by the sound of 100,000 people lying to each other for 4 days. Anyway, the basic tone is a combination of the @aguilaramp Tone Hammer AGS circuit and the Tube Screamer emulation in the @moddevices MOD Duo, the Wah is the MXR MINI Bass Wah and the Fuzz at the end is the Aguilar Fuzzistor. The bass is my @elrickbasses SLC fretted - go see one just like it on the Elrick stand if you're NAMMing. The mistakes and repetition of ideas are all mine. This week's #InventionTest part 1. Been working on some 16th note lines, trying to combine the rhythmic complexity of my usual jumble of sound with a faster tempo.
