This artwork, viewed from a visual communication perspective, leverages several key elements and principles to convey emotion and visual impact:
1. Color Scheme
• The piece uses a vibrant, high-contrast palette dominated by cool tones (blues and purples) and accented with warm colors (reds, oranges, and yellows). This creates a dynamic contrast, drawing attention to the figure’s features while evoking both calm and intensity.
• The cool tones applied to the face suggest serenity, introspection, or melancholy, while the warm, chaotic splashes in the background contrast sharply, adding energy and emotional tension.
2. Composition
• The close-up focus on the face emphasizes the subject’s introspection or vulnerability. The diagonal angle of the composition adds dynamism and avoids static symmetry, suggesting movement or depth.
• The background’s abstract patterns direct the viewer’s gaze toward the face, ensuring it remains the focal point.
3. Textures and Patterns
• The combination of soft blending on the facial contours with the rough, splattered, and dotted background adds visual interest. This juxtaposition highlights the tension between the subject’s calm demeanor and the chaotic surroundings.
4. Expression and Emotion
• The closed eyes, slightly parted lips, and downward tilt of the head suggest introspection, sadness, or a dreamlike state. This conveys a sense of narrative, encouraging the viewer to empathize or imagine the subject’s thoughts.
5. Contrast
• The contrast between the smooth, serene facial features and the vibrant, erratic background enhances the focus on the subject while reinforcing emotional depth. The interplay between light and shadow across the face adds dimensionality and drama.
6. Symbolism
• The abstract marks and colors could symbolize emotional turbulence or external chaos surrounding an otherwise calm individual, making the piece open to interpretation.
7. Audience Engagement
• The bold use of color and close cropping demand attention, while the abstract and emotional elements invite viewers to interpret the work personally, making it effective in engaging a broad audience.
This piece exemplifies how visual communication elements like color, composition, and texture can work together to convey emotion and narrative without words.

1. Color Palette: The use of bold, saturated colors in the background creates a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. The dripping effect, with colors like neon pinks, blues, and yellows, adds a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, enhancing the painting’s emotional depth.
2. Lighting and Shadow: The bright glow behind the figure casts her silhouette into sharp relief, creating a sense of depth and dimension. This use of light and shadow adds intensity and draws attention to the figure’s expressive posture.
3. Textural Elements: The dripping paint suggests a mix of both chaos and beauty, breaking the formal boundaries of the composition and adding a sense of movement. This textural quality creates a more immersive and emotionally resonant experience for the viewer.

This New Yorker cover illustration uses exaggerated perspective to convey a strong message about corporate dominance and ambition. The low-angle view of a towering businessman, with his oversized foot stepping forward, emphasizes power and confidence as he strides through a cityscape of financial buildings. The surrounding skyscrapers appear small in comparison, reinforcing his imposing stature and suggesting his influence over the urban environment. The soft color palette, combined with the sweeping curves in the architecture, adds a surreal, dreamlike quality to the image, while the businessman’s calm, self-assured expression and formal attire further underscore his authority. This visual communication effectively captures the spirit of ambition and control within corporate culture.

This simplistic photo in New Yorker magazine illustrates the clever combination of shapes, sizes, contrasts, and colors. Placing different kinds of shapes, including rectangles and circles, in different parts of the canvas hits right on the topic, that is, juggling between work and play.
By proficient use of contrast between colors, sizes, and shapes, this photo powerfully intrigues readers to ponder on the fact that work and play do juggle from time to time. Besides the contrast, there is a hint of harmony permeating all the details, which may because the colors, sizes, and shapes in some ways complement each other.

Topic 1: Universe
Link of Article 1: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2023/03/a-travellers-guide-to-the-stars-with-physicist-author-and-nasa-technologist-les-johnson/
Who the researcher is: The researcher discussed in the article is Les Johnson, a physicist, author, and NASA technologist. He works at NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, leading the development of advanced in-space propulsion technologies. His career includes roles such as Manager of the Space Science Programs and Projects Office and contributions to the Interstellar Propulsion Research Project. Johnson is also an author of science fiction and science-related books, blending technical expertise with creative exploration.

Why did I choose the topic of the universe?
The universe has always fascinated me, with its infinite expanse and mysteries waiting to be uncovered. My interest stems from a deep curiosity about how everything connects — from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies. Les Johnson's work in solar sail propulsion and his exploration of interstellar travel resonate deeply with my passion for understanding not only our place in the cosmos but also humanity's potential to explore it.
The idea of venturing beyond our solar system is thrilling, not just as a technological challenge but as a testament to human ingenuity and aspiration. Johnson's pioneering efforts, such as developing solar sails for NASA's missions, represent the tangible steps humanity is taking toward interstellar exploration. His blend of scientific innovation and storytelling inspires me to think creatively about how science and imagination converge.
The universe is also a humbling reminder of our limitations and possibilities. Learning about advancements like solar propulsion systems or asteroid scouting missions reveals how much we’ve achieved and how much lies ahead. Exploring these topics aligns with my desire to contribute to a deeper understanding of the cosmos, whether through science, art, or storytelling. Johnson’s work exemplifies this blend of inquiry, innovation, and vision, making it incredibly inspiring.
Topic 2: Philosophy
Link of article 2: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2021/07/free-will-through-the-lenses-of-philosophy-and-neuroscience-with-dr-alfred-mele/ Who the researcher is: Dr. Alfred Mele is a Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University. His work delves into the intersections of philosophy and neuroscience, particularly on topics like free will, moral responsibility, intention, self-control, and motivation. Dr. Mele has directed significant research projects such as "The Philosophy and Science of Self-Control Project" and "The Big Questions in Free Will Project."
Links containing researcher info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Mele https://philosophy.fsu.edu/person/alfred-mele https://philpeople.org/profiles/alfred-mele https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Alfred-Mele
Why did I choose the topic of philosophy?
Philosophy has always intrigued me because it explores the fundamental questions of existence, morality, and the human mind. Dr. Alfred Mele’s work on free will and self-control particularly resonates with me because it bridges abstract philosophical concepts with empirical insights from neuroscience. This interdisciplinary approach provides a comprehensive way to understand human behavior and decision-making, topics that have profound implications for everyday life and societal norms.
The concept of free will is both fascinating and deeply personal. Understanding whether our actions are truly our own or shaped by external and subconscious factors challenges our perception of accountability and autonomy. Dr. Mele’s research sheds light on these questions, providing frameworks that balance philosophical rigor with scientific inquiry.
I am especially drawn to how Dr. Mele tackles moral responsibility in light of scientific discoveries about the brain. His ability to engage both philosophical thought and experimental findings inspires me to explore how complex ideas can have practical applications. Whether in ethical debates, legal systems, or personal reflection, his work helps navigate the tensions between freedom and determinism, a topic I find endlessly compelling as I seek to understand not just the world but my place within it.

This is a clever, intricate, and thought-provoking street photograph from an amazing photographer whose Instagram handle is monaris_.
The aged woman in the central position is undoubtedly the protagonist as she looks through the glass right into the camera, appearing to try to tell a story dating from her prime days. But the photography is far more ambitious in capturing one protagonist only. Via clever use of the reflection in the glass, she includes herself and a passing-by young man in the photo as well, creating a sense of dynamic telling everyone seeing this photo that she took this photo right on the street and everything in the photo seems to be thus coming and going. People can feel time flying by while appreciating this photo.
My inspiration from this design is divided into below:
(1) Clever use of different objects, such as dynamic or static ones, can lend life to a design.
(2) Positioning of captured objects in a photo deliver the priorities the photographer tries to convey.
