Entry 16 - Song Production (Final)
The song ‘Freak Me Out’ is completed. Our job scope as discussed was arranging and recording with vocal editing. The next step is the mix and mastering stage which will be done by another engineer as requested by Leon.  The last step was to bounce out the stems, ensuring that the files are all balanced and labelled properly. This is to make the mix engineer’s job a lot easier. Overall, the process of arranging and recording a song was very fun and I learnt how to work with an artiste. I realised that it is more important to meet the client’s request rather than trying to input what we think is the best idea. At the end of the day, the client knows what they want and it is our job to deliver what they want, only giving inputs when we needed to. I have also learn to be more organised with my time management. As every project has a deadline that needs to be met, it is important to hit the deadlines as it is one of the key factors of being professional. All in all, I have gained a new set of skills during this project, as well as learning to be a well rounded music producer.

Entry 15 - Song Production
Once we had all the instruments recorded and balanced, we had Leon to come over to record vocals.  To pick the right microphone for him, we decided to test the SM7B, Aston Origin and Rode NT2A. We went for the SM7B as it suited his vocals a lot more compared to the other two condenser mics. The vocal recording process required a bit of time as we did multiple takes and auditioned the parts which sounded the best and then spliced them together for a perfect performance. After recording the main melody, we added harmonies and unison lines on top of his melody to further enhance the track.  Once the vocals were recorded, we started editing the vocals with Melodyne. This is to fix any notes that were off pitch and time, we did minimal editing to it as we wanted to retain the performance without it sounding over polished.

Entry 14 - Song Production
When the drums were programmed, we started recording the melodic instruments.  First was the bass guitar, we tracked the bass guitar, ensuring that the patterns locked in with the kick drum to give it a nice drive. Then we recorded the electric guitar parts. We had a choice of different electric guitars and auditioned multiple guitars to find the right tone. We tried a stratocaster and a telecaster and decided against them as it did not have the right tone for this song.  Ultimately, we went for a les paul for a nice and warm overdriven sound. We ran the les paul into an Axe FX 3 which is an amp modeller by Fractal Audio. We used a JCM800 model to get a modern sounding rock tone. The electric guitar parts were written around the acoustic guitar track and main melody in mind. Making sure that the parts do not distract the listeners from the main melody.

Entry 13 - Song Production
Once the acoustic guitar track was recorded, we started adding the other instruments into the track. Once the draft drum groove was removed we started programming the actual drum parts. The drums were programmed using Superior Drummer 3 which is one of the most realistic sounding drums that is not played by an actual drummer. Drum programming was tedious but fun, I had to make sure the velocities of the midi notes had variations and not to align the midi notes exactly to a grid to simulate an actual drummers playing.  We then added shakers on top of the drum groove to give it a little bit of texture to it. We had to make sure that the feel of the groove was right for the song as well to ensure that the song had the right drive to carry the performance of the vocalist.

Entry 12 - Song Production
Once the planning has been done, we began by tracking the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar will be playing throughout the whole track, hence we tracked it first to lay the foundation for the other parts of the song. We used a SM7B dynamic mic to track the acoustic guitar, positioning it 15cm away from the sound hole. We had programmed a basic draft groove to make sure the feel was right.

Recording the acoustic guitar was tricky because we had to make sure that the mic positioning was in the right place to get a balanced sound. We chose the SM7B over a condenser mic because there was a lot of background noise and we did not want it to affect the quality of the recording.

Entry 11 - Song Production
After discussing about the direction of the song, we are able to get started on the pre-production of the song. We started by laying out the form of the song. It follows a simple form:
Intro Verse 1 Chorus Verse 2 Chorus Bridge Drop Chorus Last Chorus The reason for plotting out the form first is so that we could plan out the dynamics of the song, giving it nice flow throughout the whole song. We also discussed instrumentation, referring to the reference track to get ideas for what should be included. We decided to program a drum track, track electric bass and electric guitar to get a similar sound to the reference track.

Entry 10 - Song Production
The first step that we did was to have a discussion with Leon regarding the direction that he wants to move towards with the song. During the discussion, he provided us with a demo track with just an electronic beat playing and him singing the melody while playing the acoustic guitar. He wanted to go for a pop punk vibe and provided us with a reference track.  “Complicated” - Avril Lavigne
https://open.spotify.com/track/5xEM5hIgJ1jjgcEBfpkt2F?si=7d276bbe5823413b He wanted to keep the acoustic guitar and the electronic beat at the beginning and introduce more organic instruments later on. With that information and the reference track, we had a clearer picture of what we could do. It is important to always discuss with the artiste about how do they want the final product to be like. As at the end of the day, our job is to help the artiste bring the vision that they have to life.

Entry 9 - Song Production
For my second project that I took on during the summer break, I worked together with my business partner in Clearwater Studio to produce a track for a local artiste Leon Markcus. The goal was to tie the production house together with this project so that the learning outcome will go hand in hand with each other. For this, the goal is to be able to record and produce an entire track with just a demo from the artiste. The next few entries will be my documentation of the entire production process.

Entry 8 - Production House (Final)
Throughout the process of starting this production house, I have learnt a lot of new knowledge that is not related to music. The amount of work that is required to start up a business is definitely not easy, but I do enjoy the process.
It has also made me realised that it is better to work in a team or at least have a business partner that share the same vision and goals as you. Having someone else to provide a different perspective could help in the long run.
I believe that this production house could go somewhere if we both put in the work to hit our goals in the planned timeframe. I do feel that sometimes I lack the motivation to push me, but having a business partner gives me accountability to hit the goals.
All in all, the experience was truly eye opening and do keep a lookout for Clearwater Studio.

Entry 7 - Production House
We started discussing about how are we going to achieve the goals. Without a plan, the goals would just be sitting there unrealised.  The first plan was to hit our short term goals first. We wanted to have at least 3 new clients before the deadline. Our plan is to get our portfolio up and start running google ads to get potential clients. Reaching out to up and coming artiste and asking if they need our services.  We also had plans to pitch to an angel investor. We wanted to have someone to help supplement the financial side of things. We if wanted to hire a team, we would need to pay them. Offering a piece of the company in exchange of monetary support. The money will be put into expenses for the company and paying the employees.
Throughout the meeting, I was extremely overwhelmed by the amount of things that needs to be done. But it was an eye opening experience realising what needs to be done aside from just music. I realised that music is only a small portion of it.

Entry 6 - Production House
We came up with a few goals that we strive to hit within a time frame. We felt that setting goals and looking ahead into the future would help to keep us focused and not get distracted.  For our short term goal (3 months) we aim to:
1. Launch our website by end Nov 2. At least have 2 original songs written by us for our portfolio 3. 500 followers on our instagram 4. 3 New Clients For our Mid term goal (6 months):
1. Be self sustaining.
2. More more songs out there that were either written or mixed by us.
3. Grow our presence in the industry.
For our long term goal (1 year):
1. Profitable.
2. Have a team of like minded individuals.
3. A Reputable brand.
4. A number 1 song in Spotify or apple music that is written by us.
With these goals in mind, we are able to be focused and it gives us a timeline which forces us to do our best to hit those goals within the timeframe.
