Namaste Yogis, If you're struggling with any kind of addiction, it's important to understand the cause within your brain and how karma is related to this process. Addiction is often formed because of neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize and adapt its structure and function. Essentially, neuroplasticity refers to the "road map" of your brain, and it determines how the brain works and responds to stimuli. Karma and your actions play a significant role in shaping this road map. Every action, good or bad, leaves an imprint on your brain, much like samskara in yoga philosophy. This is especially relevant when we face hurdles or stress (vrittis) in life. For instance, if you have an assignment with a tight deadline, it can cause stress. That stress might lead to harmful actions or karma, like smoking or engaging in toxic behaviors to temporarily relieve the stress. However, this relief reinforces negative neuroplasticity, meaning that your brain becomes wired to respond to stress with the same harmful habits. Over time, a cycle develops: stress triggers the same negative response, which strengthens the brain's neural pathways associated with addiction. This is how addiction is formed — through repeated stress and negative coping mechanisms. So, how do you break this cycle? The answer lies in yoga. The next time you face stress, instead of turning to bad habits, choose a positive action, such as practicing yoga. Yoga can also release dopamine, giving you relief and forming new, healthier neuroplastic pathways in your brain. Over time, just like negative habits create addiction, positive habits like yoga can create a cycle of positive neuroplasticity. Each time you're stressed, you'll be more inclined to turn to yoga, and this will help you gradually break free from any kind of addiction. By replacing negative actions with positive ones, you can reshape your brain and break the cycle of addiction, aligning your karma with a healthier, more mindful way of living. Om Shanti!
