do you use references when you draw?
yes i do! (sometimes)
it depends on the piece, but generally if i’m heavily referencing a pose from a photo i’ll mention it in the tags. i think most of the fighting doodles i have are referenced; i don’t know enough about those things to draw believable poses straight from imagination
i also take some poses from pinups or 1950s illustrations with couples!! i love how they depict intimacy and it’s always something i’m trying to improve on (have to do seljorn justice..!)
i browse them to get ideas and try to convert aspects i like (hand posture, face angle, the general Mood, etc.) into my sketches
otherwise i draw from imagination & fill in the smaller details i struggle with w/ help from refs. like in my latest post i had to look for a reference photo of hands wringing a towel because i’ve never drawn something like that before LMAO
