Dream Interpretation
Dream interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to dreams. Although associated with some forms of psychotherapy, there is no reliable evidence that understanding or interpreting dreams has a positive impact on one's mental health.
The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. Those who study dreams are known as oneirologists. Throughout history, people have sought meaning in dreams, and some cultures developed elaborate systems for interpreting them. The first organized psychological therapy centered around dreams was conducted by Sigmund Freud and his followers, who believed that dream interpretation revealed unconscious desires. The rise of behaviorism during the early 20th century marked a shift away from introspection toward empirical research, and behaviorists generally discounted the notion of using dreams in psychotherapy. Interest in dream analysis resurfaced after World War II when interest in Freudian theory reappeared. The field has grown since the 1970s after experimental psychologist Allan Hobson began to publish his theory of the neurophysiological aspects of dreaming.
