The arc of the Doctor through the Davies and Tennant eras is like:
9: Just pure pain. Lashing out and putting up very explicit walls. I think he’s 100% ready to die until Rose and Jack bring a spark of light and hope into his life. I think a lot about why he chose to show Rose the destruction of Earth on their first trip out together.
10: He’s trying to recover, but he’s not really doing it right. He’s doing what a lot of us have done and creating a persona that seems healthy in the belief that that will make him healthy. He’s still totally dependent on Rose. When he loses her he’s once again ready to die. In Turn Left its pretty obvious he committed suicide by staying down in the tunnels with the Racnoss. People like him like this, but he’s really not healing and when it comes time to change he’s not ready to face actually dealing with his pain.
11: 11 is the beginning of real healing. His friendship with Amy is incredibly important to him, but he very carefully does work to not become codependent and to define himself independently. He’s still lying though. 11 is in many ways the product of 10 refusing to change. He’s a little weirder and a little more aloof, but that’s only a superficial kind of honesty. He’s largely wearing the same persona as 10. Until he meets Clara.
12: 12 is the mortifying ordeal of being known made manifest. Its made very explicit in Deep Breath that he’s become old and less eager to please because he’s ready to drop the act he’s been putting on for years and be honest and he’s able to do that because he trusts Clara. He’s so abrasive at first because like the phrase says, it is mortifying to be known. But bit by bit he GETS THERE. Even though he goes to a really bad place in Face the Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent, I think its important that he was ready to tell Clara he loved her in FtR and was open about his feelings throughout that three-parter. Heaven Sent and Hell Bent are a really important phase in healing: Rock bottom. They’re the absolute nadir of the behavior and attitudes he displayed in The Waters of Mars and A Good Man Goes to War. At the end when he says “I went too far.” its kind of his epiphany moment. He really realizes how much he’s hurt everyone and how far gone he is and when we next see him he’s really started to change. Throughout season 10 he really becomes a better person and by the end he’s ready to leave all the pain behind. He almost commits a sort of weary suicide at the end to avoid losing the development he’s built up, but Clara’s return gives him the courage to be healthy and to go on living and its that courage that becomes 13.
12′s paragraph is the longest because he undergoes the most dramatic growth. 12 is different in every season in a totally natural way.
Anyway this is just me talking.
#twelves character development is literally so good#he just changes so much and its a really satisfying arc#text
