Technical Communication After the Social Justice Turn: Building Coalitions for Action by Rebecca Walton, Kristen R. Moore, and Natasha N. Jones is a thoroughly researched call to action to technical communicators of all fields and career points. The authors demand that technical communicators examine and correct past practices, theories and language in the field to build new practices. With the 3Ps—positionality, privilege and power and the 4Rs—recognize, reveal, reject and replace, this book serves as a guide to restructure the way technical communicators apply their services.

Beautifully Designed Documents that Just so Happen to feature my Favorite Women’s Organizations
This is a list of my top three favorite annual reports from Women’s Foundations. Their work is justice in action and I like the way technical communication and design mesh to showcase their achievements and ongoing efforts. In my opinion, their work and collateral are great examples of Social Justice at work in Technical Communication. (So, yes, this is very much an appreciation post :) and sorry for the links in post. Tumblr is being weird.)

“It’s well-known that tech has a gender and a racial diversity problem. As of 2016, the most recent year for which figures are available, Google’s workforce was only 2% black and 31% female. Butterfield-Jones has been tasked with helping the company better reflect the diverse world it works in. “It's trying to disrupt the status quo,” she says, with a smile that belies her determination.”

“Beyoncé’s company Parkwood Entertainment is facing a class action lawsuit which claims that Beyonce.com denies equal access to visually impaired users, THR reports. The lawsuit—filed today by New York woman Mary Conner, who is blind—argues that the website violates the Americans with Disabilities Act by being “an exclusively visual interface” without any coded alt-text behind the images.”

Quote
Recognizing how we might be contributing to systems of oppression is not enough; it doesn't prepare us to shift our actions. Instead, it helps us see that the systems, organizations, and institutions where we work prioritize particular experiences and groups of people. When that prioritization gets built into our policies, procedures and daily routines, those who are already marginalized struggle to be heard, valued, or treated fairly.
