Who inspires you the most @garysnowpatrol ?!

This guy is an amazing human! After playing an incredible show, he greeted his fans outside before boarding his tour bus. Not only did he take selfies, sign autographs, but he took the time to listen to the stories of his fans. I’d met @snowpatrol before when they played a private gig for a local DC radio station but tonight was different. I had time to share with him about how the song he wrote & played at the show about his dad passing away spoke to me & how my dad, who meant the world to me, had passed away during Covid. During the show, I had a moment of grieving while also remembering my super human dad who was so gracious, kind & caring, even while battling Lewy Body dementia. You know what Gary did when I told him these things?? He looked right at me & gently asked “how are you doing?” I almost started crying again.

Gary, keep doing great things, keep creating amazing music, & keep the inspiration going! 🥰

Snow Patrol – the Town Hall – March 3, 2022

Hailing from Scotland and Northern Ireland, Snow Patrol broke into the mainstream when their third studio album—and major-label debut—Final Straw, came out in 2003, charting across the world. Nearly two decades later, the five-piece is still going strong. In fact, on Thursday, their just-launched acoustic North American tour landed in Times Square for the first of two nights at the Town Hall.

Didn't harry have a team when he did the session w taylor and jackknife lee. I remember lee saying they had come up w some songs (probably Red era genre) but harry's team was looking for something big and poppy. Its pretty unheard of for a 1d member to be doing solo projects as far back as 2012 unless Sony had given him the okay. I do love Something Great which was a later collab w Jacknife but it def does imply that harry was building a solo career right in front of 1d's salad

Savage: Gary [Lightbody, of Snow Patrol], I hear you've been writing with One Direction for their next album?

Gary: Writing with Harry. Jacknife [Lee] and I wrote a bunch of songs with him. There might be one on the record, might be two, there might be none.

Savage: What sort of constraints are there when you write for a pop band?

Gary: None. We just wrote. Harry loves Frightened Rabbit, so his music taste is very varied, it's not just pop. We were pretty much writing whatever we were feeling that day. We did four tracks together and hopefully some of them will see the light of day. He's got a great voice, he's the real deal.

Savage: You did one song on Taylor Swift's Red album as well. Is it interesting to dip your toes into those waters?

Gary: Again, working with Taylor was just sitting down with a couple of guitars. She didn't come up with an entourage, there was no management looking over our shoulders. She's very down to earth and there's no starriness to her. I haven't had any pop writing sessions that have put me off pop writing sessions.

We met through Gary’s [Lightbody] friendship with Ed Sheeran. Taylor was a fan of Ed’s. They were on tour I think. Taylor came to Topanga. Body guards, big black car. We wrote a song in a couple of hours and sang it sitting on the sofa. She had a handheld microphone. Then we had pasta for dinner and hung around with my kids.

She left and I finished the song off. Owen Pallett [Arcade Fire/Final Fantasy] did some strings very quickly. Went to see her live a couple of times with my daughters who were fans of hers then. Now they like Snail Mail and Tyler the Creator.

It was out of my field of expertise and interest, but I was intrigued and my girls were thrilled. Taylor was nice and very professional. She knew what she wanted and there was no fucking about. She was seeing Harry Styles at the time, so he came to Topanga on her recommendation. She wrote a few songs with him, and it was the same thing – quick. But this time it was more directed by the management and label. They were after something specific. I wanted more acoustic and gentle, almost Americana, and they wanted bombast. They got what they wanted, and that was the extent of my foray into teen-pop territory. It was fun.
