Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami (Book Review)
Before I begin, I read this on a retreat, some time ago, and only getting into writing the review now (better late than never), so please do call me out if I have some inaccuracies.
Anyways. Norwegian Wood. This was my first Murakami, and I was pretty surprised to see that it was just... a romance novel. Admittedly, it did have a "deeper layer" to the meaning than just some dime novels, but at the end of the day, it was just a young adult romance novel. Toru is the more introverted main character, while Naoko is the mysterious girl with a complex philosophy. Surprising, right? And the story just played out that on that narrative, finishing with a satisfying but not wholly-satisfying ending. He didn't get the girl, but he did have sex with almost all the major girl characters in the book. That's the whole story. Bam. And the characterization of the women in the story is appalling to see (although some interactions were better than others), and all this elaborate character building just make the women more two-dimensional, and dare I say, stereotypical. Naoko played out to be the classic more-alluded-romantic crush. Midori, although she was my favorite character in all of the book, was obsessed with men and sex to an unnatural, mocking level. Reiko... not sure what to make of her. The whole lesbian narrative was okay? It definitely wasn't expected, I'll say that much. But in summary, all the characters were seemingly "complex" but it just came off as misogyny to me. Toru was just an everyday man, at basis. But he seems to be the most complex character, with his responses of all the... events. I did like his straightforward narrative and honest thinking. However, the reason why I gave this a 5 star was because of its writing. I don't think I ever read a book this fast. It wasn't good, in particular, but its writing was so eccentric I couldn't put it down. I admire the way Murakami writes. If anyone else were to write this, I doubt that it would have this good of a review, but Murakami pulls it off. So, out of admiration, I had to give this book a 4.5. (+0.5 for all the classic rock references.)

Heyya! I’m a bit too late to write an intro, but better late than never.
Made this blog to talk about books, mainly classics, crime, and non fiction (philosophy & anthropology and such). I love sharing little book quirks and get exposure to new books and discuss about em! I read mostly English literature (trying to get into some French and maybe Russian?). Trying to keep an aesthetic as well, but that's failing miserably.
Sorry if my writing seems a bit choppy, I have a hard time talking with people :(
Love all the annotations and tea cups <3
I’m also learning French (about A2 right now) so I can read Proust :)
