Uneven hips are a future hip replacement and a major contributor to low back problems. . So why have them? Other than the cool look they give you. . Tackling the huge group of muscles that actually control and influence the position of the pelvis is a daunting task. So let’s simplify the process. . First test to establish which side has the weakness, and then get to work fixing how you move and retrain your brain to adopt the new ‘normal.’ . THE TEST. . 1. Sit with your hips and knees at 90 degrees. 2. Extend one leg, resting that heel on the ground. 3. Stand up using the opposite leg. 4. Repeat for each side. 5. The weak side is the fail. . When doing rehab, or even prehab, the mistake most trainers, docs and coaches make is only addressing the side with the pain or injury. . That’s the recipe for repeat problems or long winded programs. . Make sure that you work through both sides. . I was brushing my teeth last night and all of the sudden I was hit with a coughing fit, so intense that I couldn’t see straight. . And then I realized that it wasn’t the coughing that was blurring my vision. . My hands were bright red, my feet were bright red, and they were so itchy that I want to peel off my skin. . My mouth barely worked, I had a difficult time speaking and I was clutching the counter to hold myself up. I looked in the mirror and my eyes looked like they were filled with blood, they were so red. . I tore open a pack of Benadryl, stuffed two in my mouth and chewed them up and tried to swallow as much of the paste as possible. . I was scared. . This was a full blown anaphylactic reaction. . I collapsed in my hallway, hard to speak, and I thought, if you’re coming to take me, you’re in for a fight. . Tick........... . Tock............. . Well it’s today, and I’m still here. . Because I didn’t roll over and let something take me down without a fight. . What if you wanted your dreams and your goals as much as you wanted to live in the moments of terror when you’re not sure that you’re going to make it? . Do your knees hurt when you squat? If that’s the case, you’re leaving some power on the table. . Anytime there’s pain, your body goes into ‘protection’ mode and no matter how great you are at pushing through the pain, you guessed it, you’re compensating. . This is a great series to get stronger and faster by allowing your body to exploit more of the horsepower that you have on tap, without compensating. . Step one, stop foam rolling your quads, you’re just beating them up for nothing. . Here’s how foam rolling works (it doesn’t), you pound the tissue with the roller essentially turning up the ‘volume’ on the sensation in that area and drowning out the ‘noise’ from the pain, especially if you’re rolling your ITB. . Working on the contractile tissue connected to the knee and the mechanics and strength upstream, is a fast, easy and effective way of creating some serious strength while keeping your knees ‘original equipment’. . Why do you need strong lats? Because they are a major player in the shoulder health game. Tomorrow we tackle the chest! . The latissimus dorsi comes from the thoracolumbar fascia and ends up on the humerus (coming up on the inside). . Here is where most ‘back training’ swerved off the track, people engage in short, restricted movements. . The longer the stretch the longer the contraction IF you move through full range of motion. . The length/tension relationship of the lat is unique and if you want to develop strong lats (yes you do) you need to treat them differently. . The shoulder becomes subject to major injury because of long term restricted use of this massive sheet of muscle. This is a great series to work through full range and subsequently, full contraction, and you’ll find yourself sporting a pair of lats that will catch wind like a hang glider on a windy day. . Yes, these drills WILL improve your pull ups. . How to tell if you’ve got a bulging disc in your neck. . Quick note, it’s still not a bad idea to get evaluated by a competent doc. . A bulging disc in your neck is not cause for alarm (outside of sequestered ruptures) and A LOT of people have them. . Neck pain. Shoulder pain. Tingling and numbness in the arm and hand. Shoulder blade pain. . The cervical and brachial plexus run a power supply all the way to the tips of the fingers and everything in between. . When there is a bulge, it complicates everything. . Just as in the lumbar spine, you need to avoid cervical flexion, to prevent the disc from loading the IVF (intervertebral foramen) and creating more problems. . Extension will force the disc to load its nucleus much more towards a centralized position. . By forcing full range of motion and working the disc through its normal mechanics, and then strengthening the posterior neck musculature, you become a rockstar for your neck. . THE TESTS (there are two) 1. Hands laced on top of your head 2. Tuck your chin and push down. 3. Pain or increased symptoms is a fail. . 1. Turn towards painful side 2. Bend towards the same side 3. Look up towards the same side 4. Push down on top of your head 5. Pain or increased symptoms is a fail. . Warning, if you don’t want the truth, stop reading because this might sting for some of you. . If you’re allowing people, circumstances or situations in your life that are not up to your standards, don’t talk to me about how high your standards are. . When you tolerate ANYTHING below where you ‘think’ that your standards are, your standards aren’t as high as you think. . You’re living according to someone else’s standards. . If your boss is doing something that is below your standards, upgrade your environment by leaving that job. . If someone in your family is doing something to damage your life, the lives of your children, or spouse, kick....them....out. They are lowering YOUR standards. . If your friends are doing something that is below your standards, whether it’s money, or relationships or health, they’re not your friends, they’re a security blanket. . You are the average of the people you spend time with and if their standards fall into any category whatsoever that doesn’t reach your baseline, you need to re-evaluate that relationship. . They won’t rise to your standards, you must rise to your OWN. . Raising your standards forces you to ask yourself better questions about the one life that matters more than anything else, your own. . Ask better questions and you get better answers, better answers always equals better solutions. . Divorce the people, standards and limitations that aren’t where you hold your baseline and marry the truth of your own story. . The flexor group of the forearm comes off of the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle) and runs the length of the arm with some muscles to the tips of the fingers. . When that attachment point becomes irritated from overuse of injury, the pain is almost unbearable. . You can’t hold anything, and even something as simple as writing can be excruciatingly painful. . By regaining external rotation at the shoulder, and strengthening both the extensors and the flexors, you relieve the pain and more importantly, you virtually eliminate future problems. . THE TEST. . 1. While sitting, using a relatively heavy kettle bell. 2. Rest the forearm across your thigh. 3. The handle of the kettle bell is at the fingers. 4. Have you ever had somebody look at you a certain way, and your reaction is to immediately get agitated and tell them not to look at you like that? . That’s your blueprint getting in the way. . What’s happening is that you ‘expect’ a certain action that fits a blueprint that you have programmed in your brain. . When the action in front of you doesn’t match the blueprint in your brain, you get dissonance and react. . Usually the reaction is frustration or anger. . It’s never happened to you right...... .
