A brand-new species of skink has been discovered on Scawfell Island, 50 km off the coast of Mackay

Queensland, Australia

This vibrant lizard, named the Scawfell Island Sunskink (Lampropholis isla), boasts bright orange sides and makes its home in the island’s rocky rainforest gullies. Surveys of nearby islands found no trace of the species, which means it's completely unique to Scawfell Island! This follows the 2023 discovery of a spectacular leaf-tailed gecko on the same island, making it the only known Queensland island with two endemic vertebrate species. Scawfell Island is part of South Cumberland Islands National Park, and its growing list of unique wildlife highlights Queensland’s incredible biodiversity and the importance of protecting these one-of-a-kind ecosystems!
