“Oh, dead punk lady with the knack / Of looking fierce in pins and black / The suburbs wouldn’t want you back …” from the poem “The Victim” by Thom Gunn (1929 – 2004).
Died on this day 46 years ago under murky, disputed circumstances at New York’s Chelsea Hotel: doomed bad girl, go-go dancer, groupie, scenemaker (and troublemaker), one half of punk’s most infamous couple – Nancy Spungen (27 February 1958 – 12 October 1978). For what it’s worth, the consensus is increasingly that Sid Vicious didn’t kill Spungen. Pictured: Spungen with Linda Ashby at Vicious’ first concert with the Sex Pistols, Notre Dame Hall in London on 21 March 1977.

sid and nancy shot at chalkie davies' house, north london, 1978
"Sid and Nancy came over a couple of times; they did not behave like they did in public, they were well behaved and polite. One night, I asked them to pose for pictures in our bathroom – they duly obliged and the photo appeared on the front page of the NME."

—————————————————————————Nancy Spangen and Sid Vicious at Allens in London for Record Mirror about their relationship, April 1978.—————————————————————————
Over lunch in a London restaurant, they both told me that they did not expect to live long, even though they had gotten rid of drug addiction. "I will die before I reach old age," Sid Vicious predicted. "I don't know why, but I have a feeling. I was on the verge of death many times, "I saved his life many times, and it had nothing to do with drugs," Nancy said. - When? Sid asked. Nancy leaned over the table and whispered. They decided not to tell me the details. "I'm going to kill myself as soon as the first wrinkles appear," Nancy said. - I don't want to get old.
