Representation of Women in Video Games. The Cause?

So.  I said I’d do this and here it is.  I have a theory and I wanted to share it. Seemed topical given the online battle going on over video games.

What is up with female representation in video games?  Is it sexism?  Misogyny?  Ignorant?  Well, I have an idea and let me share it with you.  As usual, please, indulge me and read to the end.  It is along read so I hope you all are buckled in.

What is my theory?  That the problems with representation isn’t to do with the negative outlook on women from society.  It comes from the inherent positive view of women society has.  That is to say, the view that women are inherently nice and pure, that we shield women from harm, that society cares much more about the plight of women than it does men.

I’m sure I’ve already lost a lot of you.  But please, read beyond the break.  Give me a fair shake.  I’m a woman and I’ve been a gamer for a long time, probably close to a decade and a half.  I’ve seen these issues evolve and I’ve experienced a lot of this behavior in real life.  So, I’ll say again.

I’m (increasingly) leery of posting anything that falls so perfectly in line with my own arguments when it falls on the word of just one person… so I poked around a bit… here’s what I found:

I am writing this message in/r/negative100clubas proof that message I am about to send to/u/Val_Pis a ruse. My previous trolling to convince members of #GamerGate that I am a member/supporter of the Islamic State was quite successful. #GamerGate is desperate to believe that their opponents are worse than them. They will do anything to convince themselves that we are the ones who are against justice. For this reason, they will take anything negative we say and spread it across the web, not matter how unbelievable. I am not even a major figure. So far I am just a code monkey for the gamers against Gamergate.

I have decided to write a message using the common Libertarian and Republican trope of the Democrat or Social Democrat who wants to keep the “black man” on the farm, or the minority as a “shield.”1This trope is just a manifestation of the right’s frustration with its total failure with ethnic minorities, women, and the LGBT community. For this reason, they will immediately believe and spread it because it fits their worldview. I will appear to be frustrated with/u/Val_P's “lack of gratitude” for “all we have done for her.” This message will be transphobic, but it is not sincere.

After I ban/u/Val_Pfrom/r/gamergateand/r/antigamergate, I will not use my social media accounts for at least 24 hours to give the rumour mill time to churn. Hopefully,/u/Val_Pwill immediately screencap the message and circulate it on Twitter. If things go well, Mr.Fart and the other Gamergate signal boosters will share it and then it will explode. This ruse will cause so much buttery drama that Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, 4chan, and 8chan will all be talking about it. Tonight is a great time to do it because Gamergate is extremely butthurt after The Colbert Show having Anita Sarkeesian on. They will be desperate for any scrap of evidence to make themselves look better in this PR war.

I am aware that this may cause me to be thrown out of the anti-Gamergate and social justice movements, but I am a troll first and an advocate for social justice second. My time on 4chan has taught me that reactionaries will believe anything so long as it furthers their cause. Long after this message has been proven to be a ruse, they will continue to try to use it as an argument against people who oppose #GamerGate. Any damage done to the reputation of those who oppose #GamerGate will be at best superficial, especially since the message will be revealed as a ruse. We are on the side of feminism, a movement that has never lost, so this will not endanger our cause in any significant way. The important thing for progressives to do in culture wars like this is to have fun, because in the end we always win.

To help future trolls, I will give a line by line explanation of the message, detailing every barb in the baited hook.

Describe the ‘debt’ is the most hyperbolic terms possible.

Unwarranted and unwanted paternalistic feelings of betrayal will put anyone off.

These final sentences state the message in unambiguous, concise terms so that even the knuckle dragging reactionaries of Gamergate will be able to understand, parrot, and feign offense to.

The message will be sent using the/r/antigamergatename so that Twitter users know it comes from the “anti-#GamerGate movement.”

This isn’t simply “trolling”. This is an actual example of an actual “social justice warrior” actually engaging in an act vicious and cruel for the benefit of their ideology.

And justifying it every step of the way.

While they say it was all an act of trolling the reality is this:

They really did ban a transperson from a forum for being Pro-GG and Trans.

They really did inform that trans person that they were their property, and regardless of their justification that calling the trans person property was just trolling they actually act like that trans person is property and abuse them accordingly.

They really are a social justice warrior.

People need to see this. Everyone needs to see this. To be made aware of the lengths Social Justice Warriors will go to.

To see the deceit and manipulation they are capable of.
