To avoid making the world too dystopian, I found more optimistic looking futures. I grabbed images of green cities as well.

Some thumbnails for story structure. Unfortunately these are all I have at the moment, I’ll update this post with more when I’m finished.

Some early research -- these images are examples of some aesthetics I’d like for my story. I’ve also included a couple of already existing character designs (Baymax from Big Hero 6 and Canti from FLCL) to try and visualize Cook.

Questions About Character Dynamics
What is their relationship?
Dr. Chen created Cookbot. As a result, there is a semblance of a mother + son relationship. Dr. Chen is very proud of her creation, almost floored that Cookbot becomes sentient. While letting him go seems strange considering how attached she is to the robot, she finds it similar to when a child leaves their parents to go be an adult. Cookbot thinks the absolute world of Dr. Chen and is grateful for his existence. Within the context of the restaurant the two are coworkers, so interaction has gotten brief.
What is each character’s status?
Because Cookbot is a robot programmed to listen to the functions put out by Dr. Chen’s watch and Dr. Chen herself, she has power over him. It’s not a malicious relationship; Dr. Chen would technically be Cookbot’s manager if he were human. There is no power struggle between the characters until the climax of the story, after Dr. Chen denies Cookbot’s request to go home with her. Realizing that he couldn’t achieve his goals through the powers that be, Cook acts out in an aggressive and assertive manner, jumping out of a window to find answers. In that moment Cook has power over himself for the first time. Dr. Chen is still in control as she considers formatting Cookbot, but ultimately concedes power.
What do they want from each other?
Cookbot wants information about the outside world from Dr. Chen, while Dr. Chen wants Cookbot to do his job. At the end of the story, Dr. Chen wants Cook to enjoy his newfound freedom.
Who is the story about?
Based on how much Cook’s character arcs throughout the story, I would say this is his story. Although Dr. Chen has the power in the story and is the first one introduced to the audience, her arc isn’t as drastic -- it doesn’t really start until the end of the story. Cook’s actions are what inspire Dr. Chen to change, which suggests that she isn’t as important as him.

Character Profile: Cookbot
What is your character’s ethical baseline? (How do they approach conflict/make decisions?)
As a robot, Cook doesn’t have a sense of morality. He is programmed to satisfy the need of his creator, Dr. Chen, and the customer should they have any issue with the food. He is very accommodating. His comforting nature, programmed by Dr. Chen, feels genuine.
Is the character dominated by emotion or logic?
Logic. Cook starts to show hints of emotion towards the climax of the story for the first time.
What is the character’s greatest strength?
Despite being a robot Cook displays many traits of humanity and transcendence. Cook is able to consider the environment outside of the restaurant beautiful, and even tries to make small talk with Dr. Chen to try and understand her better.
What is their flaw?
Cook is too smart for his own good.
How does s/he see her/himself?
Cook sees himself as an instrument of the restaurant. He realizes he’s different from his coworkers, who aren’t nearly as inquisitive about their circumstances. After that, he considers whether or not he has a purpose outside of the restaurant.
How is s/he seen by others?
A big robot.
What is her/his biggest secret?
Sometimes when Dr. Chen puts him into sleep mode he actually stays awake because there’s an extra appliance that refuses to close. It’s a script that began writing itself when Cook went into sleep mode one night.
What does the character want?
Cook wants to find a real purpose and learn more.
How far will the character go to get what s/he wants?
Cook will not hesitate to take action if he finds reasoning behind them, like when he jumped out of the window to see the outside world.
What does the character need to learn?
He needs to learn whether or not there are other robots as pensive as himself.
How does the character arc in the story?
Cookbot experiences a mental arc, having transcended the idea that he is a robot. He becomes emotional and curious, seeking enlightenment. Because this is a foreign concept for him, it is overwhelming him and pushing him to action.
1. What is your character’s full name?
COOKBOT_001
2. When were they born?
February 4th, 2055
3. What are their parent’s names?
Tiffany Ling Chen
4. Do they have any brothers or sisters?
Technically, the other robots he works with could be considered his siblings. He feels no familial connection with them, however.
5. What kind of eyes do they have?
LCD eyes.
6. What kind of hair do they have?
Chrome.
7. What is their greatest fear?
Sometimes Cook wonders what happens if he doesn’t wake up from sleep mode. He hasn’t been able to make any conclusions yet.
8. What body type are they?
Cook is a large robot, standing at 7 feet and weighing 200 pounds.
9. What is listening to their voice like?
It is upbeat, kind of like a ringtone that speaks. The quality of the sound is very similar to autotune.
10. Do they have a favourite quote?
“Great job today, Cook.” - Dr. Chen
11. What sort of music do they enjoy?
Unfortunately Cook isn’t exposed to a lot of music, but sometimes he’ll hear things playing in the office that sound interesting.
12. Have they ever cheated on a partner?
Robots don’t have partners and even if they did Cook probably wouldn’t cheat on them.
13. Have they ever lost someone close to them?
No.
14. What is their favourite sound?
The door whenever Dr. Chen comes in for the morning.
15. If they found a $20 note on the ground, what would they do with it?
He would try to identify the owner, then defer to Dr. Chen and place it into her possession for safekeeping.
16. Are they judgmental of others?
No -- on days where customers are particularly jerks, he’ll assume that they’re just having a bad day.
17. Have they ever been drunk?
No.
18. What are they like when they stay up all night?
Introspective and profound.
19. Have they ever been arrested?
No, he has never left the restaurant before the story. As the laws are where Dr. Chen and Cook reside, robots don’t have the same rights as humans. Cook wouldn’t have the option to be arrested; if he were to violate any laws he would be shut down and incinerated immediately.
20. What colour evokes strong memories for them?
The color purple is very mesmerizing for Cook.
21. What do they do on rainy days?
Work.
22. How would they survive the zombie apocalypse?
By being a robot.

“Hello!”

Nope.

The chef hat he gets to wear is pretty cool.
27. What is their most disliked saying?
“It’s time for you all to go to sleep.”
28. Do they have any enemies?
No. As of now, Cook has no perception of who is ‘good’ or ‘bad.’
29. Would you two be friends? Why?
No I wouldn’t be friends with a robot lmao that’s so sad
30. What disgusts them?
When the different meats on his grill end up touching. It’s a health and safety violation.

Character Profile: Dr. Chen
What is your character’s ethical baseline? (How do they approach conflict/make decisions?)
Dr. Chen is rational and has a methodological nature, which lends itself to her passion for robotics. She would prefer to avoid conflict, opting instead to defuse them peacefully with logic. Because of this, she is willing to let her convictions slide if it meant a peaceful solution.

Logic.
What is the character’s greatest strength?
Dr. Chen’s greatest strength is her knowledge and willingness to learn. Unfortunately it’s can’t be used to her ability at the restaurant.

She is prone to fall into a routine and is content with it, as Dr. Chen is afraid of spontaneity. Sometimes she is too inflexible.
How does s/he see her/himself?
As of now, Dr. Chen views herself as a failure for not doing as much as she thought she would in robotics.
How is s/he seen by others?
The customers that have interacted with her in the past describe Dr. Chen as “sad looking, apathetic, and very tired.”

What does the character want?
Dr. Chen wants to devote more of her time to robotics and feel fulfilled again.

What does the character need to learn?

How does the character arc in the story?
Dr. Chen experiences a spiritual arc, having gone from hopeless to hopeful thanks to Cookbot’s newfound sentience.
