so... what does it mean to be a dark horse exactly?
personally, i always thought that, if a soul horse and rider's relationship is about the bond that you share and being as one, a dark horse and rider's relationship would be about indifference and treating the horse as an extension of the self/a tool.
so i figure the dark horse ritual removes the personality/free will of the horse, severs it from its instincts. makes it quiet, still, unresponsive to anything but its rider's commands. uncanny. wrong.
something that Sabine says during the eq festival... something about how no one knows how to control their horses, and how Khaan only responds to her and nothing else. that cemented it for me.

toying with the idea of giving the soul riders injuries to go with their circles. basically, their level of power is too much for their bodies. with great power comes great risk of harm...

low level refers to magic that anyone can do after some practice regardless of their level of power.
high level refers to magic that takes skill and practice to cast.
soul rider refers to magic that only soul riders can cast. this has less to do with skill and practice (though it still involves those) and more to do with sheer power. only soul riders have the raw power for these spells.
