please info dump on me /gen

OFF is a French classic RPG game that came out in 2008, but has gotten multiple translations over the years! The most common translation used is from 2011 iirc! The team that made it is named "Unproductive Fun Time" with two members: Mortis Ghost and Alias Conrad Coldwood! Mortis coded the game and drew all of the artwork, and Alias came up/composed all of the music!

you play as a character named ‘The Batter’ and you are purely here to assist him in purifying each zone you come across—getting rid of specters(ghosts) and helping the town’s people. In total there are four zones with one secret location, and each zone has several unique puzzles and lore that is told within them all by the townspeople/employees you encounter. (the world of OFF is fucking surreal. there’s blood/meat rivers/water, the citizens breathe smoke, and they extract minerals from cows—shit like iron. all revealed in towns/work history). you, the player, is also technically a character as well, but you are only acknowledged by Batter himself and two of the characters who can break the fourth wall.

each zone has a “guardian” that acts as a final boss when you finish clearing everything. each guardian is unique like their zone and had a unique personality and design. once you defeat a guardian, the zone is purified. if you were to come back from another zone, everything would be white and “pure”, and the music would be significantly different.

i feel i should mention this game makes you question your choices. the way the characters speak to you, the way the fourth wall breaking characters speak to you, directly, it makes you think twice about what you’re doing. but it’s not like some other games. you stick to the path you make and you have to make a decision at the complete end of game.

𖤐｡⋆｡basic facts and lore archive: ziel abhilin

WARNINGS: mentions of mental, emotional and physical child abuse, heavy religious themes.

NOTES: super long!!!! this is my third oldest oc and the one with the most changes! he’s probably my second favorite character behind michael and means a lot to me, he got me through tough school times.

𖤐｡⋆｡ in this world there are only 2 realms. the one that belongs to humans and the one to otherworldly creatures. things that only appear in things of legend and tales of old.

𖤐｡⋆｡ long ago when portals were commonplace the people of said realms visited and exited as they needed/pleased. the ruler of the mythical realm got along for many many decades. but of course that could never last forever, as wars are always a possibility between two places.

𖤐｡⋆｡ the war between the two realms that happened it split the relationship in half so badly the mystical realm was closed, no one could come in, no one could come out. this happened many many millennia ago. however, randomly every 200 years said portals will open due to an influx of magic. there are no warnings to accompany them. they last a few hours minimum, and a week maximum.

𖤐｡⋆｡ long after the portals opening were common knowledge and people took it upon themselves to either leave their homeland for a new or disregard the portals entirely as the people behind it have been looked down upon, a certain set of parents knew it was about time the portals were about to close. they quickly made their way into the portal and headed for the nearest hospital and into the neonatal intensive care unit for their baby.

𖤐｡⋆｡ with looks of disgust they looked over until they found a baby that was theirs, one that looks like them and not a creature of fairytales. quickly they took their baby and swaddled him in a blanket, hastily making their out of the hospital in the chaos that always happened when portals were re-opened and closed. after running out they safely made it back, back from all the chaos and grabbing hands.

𖤐｡⋆｡ after so many times of trying and waiting they finally had a child of their own. a darker skinned baby boy who would be named ziel, cute tight curls of hair and so full of joy. away from all those creatures who couldn’t possibly know the zpain they’ve been through.

𖤐｡⋆｡however, ziel was not a human baby. ziel was not their baby. he may have looked like them but the reality was that the man and woman who held him in their arms kidnapped him.

𖤐｡⋆｡ ziel was of demon descent and naturally was one. the sudden change in energy and restrictions of the human realm had affects on his natural growth that stopped him from growing naturally and caused him to grow like a normal human child.

𖤐｡⋆｡ his parents never told him of his origin and never planned to either. as he grew, the energy of the human realm started to take a heavy toll on him. eventually his parents took him to get checked out by both a priest and a doctor. ziel doesn’t know what half the things they spoke about, he was 12 at the time. it didn’t seem like he was in trouble or anything, he just knew he felt sick all the time.

𖤐｡⋆｡ after hours of appointments they all finally went back home. there had never been more silence and pain in the house before this.

𖤐｡⋆｡ his parents before they left was given a recipe for something to baptize ziel. they wanted to force whatever they thought was in him out. they just wanted their son back from whatever they knew was coming.

𖤐｡⋆｡ ziel can’t remember if the elixir was actually hot or not. or even what happened before his parents poured it on him. he remembers his dad holding him so he couldn’t even move, and his mothers eyes. her eyes were unnerving and it made him fear her. the elixir she poured on him burned. his skin seething and feeling like it would melt off his body. he remembers feeling his dad flinch at his bloodcurdling screams. he can’t remember much after, not other than waking up in the hospital the next morning.

𖤐｡⋆｡ he had permanent burn scars spreading from the lower side of the left spot of his neck and covered most of his back. he lost his voice for a few hours due to the screaming. he shook for hours and sometimes still does when he’s around them. they told him that he should be fine now, and that both the medications for his burns and basic pain medicine.

𖤐｡⋆｡ his parents apologized for whatever that was worth and said they all had no idea that it would react that way, never apologizing for the action itself. they blamed him indirectly and he knew that. the whispers of his parents behind his back. that was the day he realized these people were not ones who he could ever call his caretakers again.

𖤐｡⋆｡ his parents decided to move, after ziel was well enough healed of course. they’d be moving to an area that has had less gateways show up there and more control over when they did. his parents signed up for the local church as a way to get his spirits back up after the incident.

𖤐｡⋆｡ his new school was a christian school. the school itself was very open and accepting, all except from their distain for the people of the other realm. saw them as nothing but dangerous.

𖤐｡⋆｡ the stress from the new school along with the constant threat of “the incident” happening again, his parents emotionally and mentally abuse that tried to turn him into the perfect son started to take hold on him over the years. as he grew he always had frequent nightmares and headaches as he wasn’t meant to grow in this realm. he refused to tell his parents anything.

𖤐｡⋆｡ it all culminated a few weeks before his 16th birthday. it all became so painful for him that his natural form that should have never been hidden in the first place. ziel was a natural born demon and he found that out that night that he was not from here. and those people out there weren’t even his parents.

𖤐｡⋆｡ this is also when he started to take interest in magic of the other realm now that he knew he could. it genuinely made him happy as he experimented with the worlds many spells. somehow convinced his overseers to let him keep some trinkets that held some magical capabilities they had no idea of. soon enough he had a spellbook full of things. he was somewhat happy for a while.

𖤐｡⋆｡ that was until he accidentally left it in the classroom one day. he was lucky his teacher kept it for him and didn’t report him. in truth, his teacher was also from the other realm and made peace with living here with his kids. he ends up being the person ziel can come to actually talk without being afraid. and he tells him what’s happening with him. he trusts him.
